danferd2002,

you do realize that on this side of the hobby, $$ not being an issue means $15,000 + right ?

Default Sorry to hear bout your loss

Again, how fast do you want to go?

If 200 mph is fast for you, then there are many options.

Something significantly faster needs a little more thought

Not to start anything, but what kind of experience do you have?, that 11,000 won't last long if you are not ready for it. I am by no means an expert, I only have four turbine flights but know that things happen really fast!

May I recommend you buy a car instead? A used porsche perhaps...

Spending 11k on a "fast jet", on a whim, without extensive experience sounds like a short lived venture....

I plan to buy a turbine soon, I hope, but I think a "slow jet" would be better to start with

Sorry to hear of your loss.

A quick look at your posting history shows that most of your posts are in the car forums. What RC aircraft experience do you have ?

I don't mean to bust your bubble, especially when you are already hurting from the loss of your granfather - but putting a lot of money into a fast jet and then losing it due to inexperience would perhaps not be the ideal way to use that money. It seems likely that your grandfather would have wanted you to buy something that you get lasting pleasure out of ... so if you are fairly inexperienced with RC aircraft, please think hard about getting a more modest aircraft to get started on.

Regs,
Gordon

Default Scale Jets

I have an Avonds F-104 Starfighter, in drone colors, A JetCat P-80 with 4.0 ECU, Robart custom landing gear with Glennis wheels and brakes, dual I4C voltmeters, dual switches, and pressure guages with about 15 flights on it. See attached pix. Looks great and flies well. I'll sell it w/ the engine for $6000 or without for $3500. Regards, Bob

Default I'm with Gordon

I'm with Gordon on this one.

Why don't you take the cash and put it into something that will be a little longer lived and perhaps have more long term value than an RC jet. How about investing it in real estate, or if that is too boring a classic car. If I had to guess I would say your grandfather would be happier with something like that.

Not lecturing, just hoping you end up doing well.

Guys,
When I was 11,I wanted to get in this hobby sooo bad,and I wanted to start with a P-51.When I went to the local field, someone took the time to explain the deal to me.Now I'm 38,still doing this for a hobby, and I fly jets for a living.Instead of beating on this kid,use some energy to educate him.
Danferd,
I know its not what you want to hear, but it takes time to get to the point where you can successfully fly a really fast plane. How much time really only depends on how motivated you are.You haven't mentioned how much,if any experience you have.Your best bet would be to go to a local club field and watch, and talk to some of the guys.I wish you luck, and if I can help you please send me an e-mail,and I will call you.Don't be discouraged!!

Default AD F-16

If you want very fast and cool consider the Aviation Design F-16 with a 27 lb thrust turbine.... well capable of 200 + mph and a very strong, large airframe...

Well if you have 11 G's, but lack fast aircraft experience why not spend a little, and get a prop jet?
There are many that are quite fast just like jets but much cheaper. Then after you figure out if you can handle or not handle them you'll still have gobs left to get a nice jet.

I especially like the Great Planes Patriot after watching one at the local field fly. Gobs of vertical, and super fast especially out of a dive. Besides that after flying a little fast prop plane, a big fast turbine looks much slower.
The guy at the field had a OS .46 rear exhaust on it with a ducted fan piston, and sleeve.

Vertical till you can't see it no more, and high speed passes it went by like a rocket.
Or you could get something like a Shrike or a Diamond Dust. Most speed is a perception thing and the bigger something is the slower it looks.
I'd also recommend taking $200 or so of that, and getting a good simulator. I used mine as a warm-up before going to field no matter what I'm going to fly. Kind of gets that first flight out of the way.

If you have fast aircraft experience, then you need to get a Firebird from Jet Model Products which is probably the fastest production kit out there with an AMT Olympus. You will learn that flying in the OH WOW! speed zone, You don't tend to fly it going wide open all the time like the prop planes because they are fast and use up a lot of real estate.

Think first

danferd2002,
in most all cases i would never disclose this but seeing your post
i just can not help myself (sort of like being an rc wannabe guy)
it was the incredible jets of todays rc world that drew me to this
hobby. i have as yet to solo. i have built 2 arf prop planes but
the draw was to strong and i have just begun a balsa bandit kit.
i understand this is a fast jet as you asked about. it's very scarry but "god help me i love it so" i just sit there and
stare and think and wait till it comes clear. of course i did all the
reality checks and stressed over the money AND as you can see found places and people to help (LOTS OF HELP) mostly here on RCU. i really don't believe theres a rc person out there who lives jus on the side of reality checks. KUDOS to the folks that say "think about it" cause you do need to do a lot of thinking but still there are several ways to learn to swim, the fastest being jump...my granpa was a really great guy and i always wanted to please him. i'll bet buying a beautiful, cool looking really fast jet would fit his idea of "buy something for yourself" i figure with everything including field gear i'll be in for about $ 7K in your case that would still leave enough for a down on a used porsche or a first class flying school. you can be smart AND follow your
heart.

have fun, bill

how fast does the new "magnum force" .46 speed demon go?...i heard it goes like a bat out of hell...FMS models it as very quick...quicker than many turbines in fact..

and all for under $300 incl engine...so with $11k you could certainly ramp up the skills and crash a couple then move onto jets without it taking all your dough!

just a thought...
