RE: Whats so special about jets?
For me, scale planes do it and jets are one aspect of scale planes. The cool thing is after landing one of my HST powered jets and a turbine pilot walks over and asks what turbine is in the plane. That's when you know your edf doesn't sound like a pissed off dentist drill

RE: Whats so special about jets?
I'm thankful that there are other people willing to spend the money to fly jets (I love to hear and watch, but I don't believe I would ever put the $$$ into it).

I think the appeal is the turbine. It's the sound, the smell, the heat, the technology. Let's face it , the jet jocks are typically techie's.
Dare I say it but, this is why EDF's don't have the wow factor: no turbine! As proof, I'll take heat (no pun intended) from the EDF flyer's but, guarentee you that two identical planes, one turbine powered and one EDF, the turbine powered has the wow factor. Hence it's the turbine that turns everyone on

Although I am mostly a WWII warbird guy,I like Jets.
Back in the day, I had a Byron F-16 with an OS 77. I like the way it looks.
I flew it once and decided that the power system at that time was archaic in every aspect. Sound, speed, configuration. BVM being a bit better, but still a noisy nitro motor turning a fan. Only heard the motor screaming
I decided to wait for someone to develop a micro turbine.
So now I can say it's the turbines that make me own a few Jets.
The brushless motors of today with the new fans are starting to provided good performance along with good turbine like sound. In the 90mm range, it's a good low cost option.

I only partly agree with that. Sure... there is a ''WOW'' when you see someone drag out a $20k jet.... but I get a wow factor from my ''Dollar Store'' jets all the same. (I have well under $1500 into any one of my jets)
I think the ''WOW'' comes from the essence of what it is. It's a Turbine... it's small... and it actually runs !!!!! Also... unlike a little glow engine... it sounds, and smells like the real thing.
I'm right with Eddie on his performance thoughts. If jet's were hard to fly... I wouldn't do it. I would simply have an engine on a stand, and I would play with it once in a while. I'm not the typical Jet-Jock. I fly at half power most of the time, and keep it well under 100 mph. But watching my jets fly past... smooth... and then pull up for a full throttle climb out.... and nothing has put a bigger smile on my face in RC in a very long time.
I can honestly say.... the actual ''JET'' air frame isn't it at all. In my +30 years of flying RC... I've never owned a pusher-Jet, or an EDF. Neither one does anything for me. I have recently thought about an EDF... but every time I look at them... I think to myself... ''Why spend the money?''
It's 100% the engine, and what it brings to the party. So... the Hart of the model, moves the Soul of the pilot.

The wow factor is, how many $$$ did you say this kit is going to cost me. My new car cost less than that.

RE: Whats so special about jets?
Regardless of scale I also like other aircraft, the vehicle that can travel high above grounds and water but jets are so special because it can fly at very high energy and power. Also because of technology, aerodynamic structure, jet blast, masterpiece value and beauty...

My first jet I spent about $90.00- $100.00 new JR DS-8411 for my Kangaroo four elevons (following the assembly manual)
My buddy re-used four Hitec HS-645MG ($35.00 new) on his Rookie.
I had 18lbs thrust, he had 28lbs and it nevered showed as in servo performance.
Do you really need a 125.00 kevlar fuel tank or 95.00 fibreglass or will a recycled 64 oz juice bottle do?
Hunt down deals on used but quality equipment. Check your own parts bin.

RE: Whats so special about jets?
With jets you have:
1. Virtually no vibration like that with gas engines SOthe airframe and servos should last longer
2. Cool sound
3. Turbo Props come into this category.. again virtually no vibration unless you don't balance that big prop
4. If you like it, kero has that real smell...
5. No gooey oil to clean up from the exhaust as in glow engines
6. some of todays "sport jets" are have amazing flying capabilities
7. There are even 3Djets for those who want to "hang there"
8. Huge variety of jet planes available includine self launch gliders.. boy are theyFUN!
9 Huge variety of turbine sizes available to power all sizes and types of planes...

$900 for a freshly rebuilt AMT AT-180 (I've seen them go for a lot less too) $140 for the airframe on a super sale around X-mas time. full of servos, and radio gear I had. 64 oz juce bottle for a tank. Home made brakes, Dubro tires that were in my junk box. I'm sure there is $100 in "Extras".
This one, I may have a little more than $1500 into it... but not too much.
$1200 for the Wren, but it needed new bearings. ($120) The airframe is Nitroplanes, and was again around $120 on a super sale. I bought a real thrust tube for $80. And about $100 again in "Extras". So this one may be $1600~$1700
Project #3 is a JC100 engine that I picked up used for $1000. It just came back from Eric with a clean bill of health, and was able to get the lifetime warranty put into my name. (FYI, Eric has proven to be understanding, and EXTREMELY helpful. I can't recommend a JC engine enough if you are looking for something) Then I got a set of wings, H-Stab, wing tube, and bags from a CARF Lightning, for $150 shipped !!!! I figure I will spend $100 building a fuse... another $100 in "Extras"... and a few $$$ in other misc parts. (so another $1500 jet)
I'm thinking that it will look like a big "Reaction" with 22~24 Lbs of thrust on tap.

RE: Whats so special about jets?
LOL. Thanks for the enthusiasm all, I am not quite ready to "jump in" at this point, I have enough on my plate now. However it does make me think that I need to look into it more. There is not ONE jet at my club, it would be nice to be the first. I can't seem to get into the "for sale" section at RCU from work, so I will look later. I will have to do some reasearch on what to look for in a used turbine. I don't want someone elses problems, but I don't want to hi-jack this thread with that question so I will begin elsewhere.
Thanks!
Dave
Thanks!

Hi
What can be more beautifull than airborne a scale jet, retract the gear, put the smoke and lights on, landing, opening a canopy and watch the moving pilots?
It's just beatifull.
Scale jets are the ultimate thrill. Can't explain why I love them, but I do.
But remember, a bit of masouquism is needed for this particular hobby[&:]
Sure it will crash... just don't know when

Nope, the guy is a turbine pilot. Most likely, you've never heard the Schubeler HST fans. Watch the video below of my 36 pound Hunter and you will see there is no high pitch dentist drill sound, only turbine like sound.
