Default RE: Turbine oil?

I have posted this many times, but I understand people being skeptic.

Some well known guys from Canada and Northern Europe told me they have been using marine outboard oil (TCW-3) for years, not by choice but for the simple reason that turbine oil is just not available over there, or it is extremely hard to find.

I myself have been using it for about a year now, and my jetcat an jet central seem to like it. I dont have long term experience with this nor am I am able to fly as frequently as I would like, but others have with excellent results. I can tell you I've had my engines and fuel cans sit idle for months and have not had a problem yet. Perhaps poeple who fly more often may yield different results, but I don't get why TCW-3 has not made it mainstream, it is bio-safe and available everywhere, almost to simple to be part of this hobby. I run out of oil, I go to Pep Boys or Walmart to get some!

Hello Gonzalo

You are right. Let´s go fly and try Mobil DTE and 2T oils. As other users have related good news and also some turbine manufactures aprove their use, i think there is no place for worries here. Let´s have fun.

Regards
Celso

I really don't. I hate having to order oil online, so I would always go to a local FBO to buy turbine oil (@$22/quart). That's when I realized it was too much money so I started looking for locally available alternatives. Then I found TCW-3.

A lot of locals use DTE and it seems to be the norm over conventional turbine oil. I would not hessitate to use it, no matter what the manufacturer recommends.

Ok thanks David

I will go with DTE from what i have seen on this forum. A lot cheaper here in Brazil and less toxic than conventional turbine oils.

Thanks for the invitation. I will give a try with Mobil DTE and let you know the results. As many good reports from other users i think it is safe to use even some manufacturers do not aprove it.

Jose:

The funny thing is that Jetcat sells an oil that says that is not harmful for humans but they don't give any details. By logic, it can't be regular turbine oil since everybody knows its harmful for human health so the only alternative is that it's an oil very similar to DTE.

I just think they try to protect their oil selling business.

Celso I used it and is ok, and also found this interesting info from the Jet Munts vt80 manual.. next step in my tests on oils with the Jetcats:

By the way it would be great to meet you in SJRP if you can do it.

Hi Guys,

I took the plunge this afternoon and put a couple of flights on a P-120 SE running top of the line Motorex full-synthetic 2t oil. Like others, I'm increasingly keen to avoid exposure to turbine oil and ride dirt-bikes as well so have much easier access to either Motorex or Motul oils than turbine oil at my local bike store.

Regards,
Garrett

Hi guys, just a up date!!

I'm using the 2T oil by Motul, about 80 liters of jet A 1 on my JetCat ensines, results:

With 4% , the started is to havy on the first turn on of the day

With 3,5%, the started is almost good

with 3%, spot on, very nice starts all day on!!!

Hope I helped!!!!

See you everyone !!!

Diego:

Thanks for the report.

Other manufacturers are saying exactly the same thing as you.... when using 2T oil, you need to use a little bit less (Jetcentral recommends 2% instead of 2.5% of turbine oil).

Have you seen any changes on your operating temperatures ?

Please keep reporting when you get more hours of operation.

Gonzalo, where did you get the 2% as opposed to 2.5% recommended information ? I just switched to using the recommended amsoil 2C synthetic(@2.5%) and went from Kero to diesel.

It appears in the manual and has been confirmed to us by the factory. In the factory they use Motul 710 at 2% for running all their turbines.

They use 2% because at 2.5%, the starter motor works too hard (especially at the first start of the day..)
