Keep the posts coming! Sounds like the set up will be spot on with the 220.

Dantley,

I'm really interested in how you are going to use the Cortex with your Sbus setup? When I enquired about this over on the Cortex/Bandit thread I was told there is no option for serial data in, serial data out on the Cortex.

I'm assuming that you will be using an Sbus setup given the equipment you are using.

Malcolm, I will be using a traditional setup for the servo leads, which is how I'll get the gyro to work.servo set-up if the Robbe/Cortex unit do not work for me, I'll use a Power Box with iGyro.

Here are pics I took of the Shockwave during daylight.

Other than all the F-words () in your jet D, it looks great!

Thanks Dantley, I have the same servos/Robbe power unit wired Sbus in my Skymaster Hawk and would really like to be able to add a gyro.

Thought you had solved it for me!

Not a straight sbus solution, but couldn't you use the SBE-1 (1-5) plugged into the Cortex which would then output serial data to all the sbus equipment? Of course you'll still have to plug the Cortex into the regular channels of your Rx, Robbe or PB system, but again, at least you'll have serial out to the servos.

I've just started using sbus (two airplanes) and a Cortex in a non-sbus application (Shockwave), but have been thinking of a way to use the Cortex in an sbus equipped plane. Just thinking out loud.

Good try George, but it doesn't help a lot in my install. I have two 3 channel Sbus receivers plugged into the Robbe power unit which outputs Sbus to all the flying services and pwm to ECU, brake and gear valves, etc. I really need to take the serial data from the power unit into a gyro and then output it back to the servos.

Ah 3 Ch. RXs, you're right Malcolm, that won't work in your set-up!

Then how about adding two SBD-1s and a hub between the Cortex and RX? Again, this is just a "work around", and is definitely not ideal, but you'll have Sbus on both sides of the Cortex; and until it can handle serial data, I don't see any other way.

Not too sure what happens when you try and mix two serial data streams. The Robbe box "decides" which stream to pass to the servos based on signal strength. I think this model is gonna fly gyroless until a suitable device appears.

Hey Dantley, how is the Shockwave build going and did you do any testing on the Cortex yet?

Ya guys, the cortex won't OUTPUT serial data.. only decodes it and passes it to channels A-E servo output, plus one aux pass thru output..

We mentioned this to the captron lead for future consideration

Yes, don't cross serial streams without a traffic controller.. You know what happens when you cross streams.. "ghost buster"..

I am considering abandoning the Cortex/Robbe set-up and going with a PowerBox Royal SRS with iGyro built in. Seems to be the path of least resistance to get a 3 axis gyro integrated into the plane. In terms of progress, the Shockwave build slowed down while I wrap up some final details on my Skymaster F-104 (was waiting for a light kit). I'm planning to jump back on the Shockwave next week.

I have the power box royal SRS in my lighting and my buddy has the exact same set up in his shock wave. the other benefit is you can run dual 3ch rx's (if using futaba)

Works good

Don, using dual 3 ch receivers is that's exactly what I'd do as well. Glad to hear the Powerbox system is working for you and your buddy.

Congrats with a great plane! I LOVE your scheme! :-D
I want one myself!

A rookie question: Why do you, great skilled jockeys, use gyro on these sport planes?

Looking forward to the rest of this tread! :-)

Primarily to smoothen out the flight. Gyro assistance really helps during bumpy wind conditions.

Just took delivery of my new Shockwave. In the process of ordering needed equipment. Can't wait to start the assembly process. This is my favorite part.

Scott and Pablo are great to deal with.
