And it begins! Registration?

I hope not. Some of the more "unsophisticated" (for lack of a better civilized term) of them are the cause of all this and I'm personally hoping they get their posteriors handed to them.

Welp, I guess if I register the $5 is going to cover any full scale aircraft I own too. ...because the FAA has acknowledged that Congress has prohibited it from making any new rules to cover model aircraft, so the ability to register all of one's aircraft using a single identifier cannot be a new rule but must necessarily be merely a reinterpretation of an existing rule that applies to all aircraft, according to the FAA's own logic.
What a can of worms the FAA has opened...lol.

Well, I went to the site, there were 2 buttons, one said " register your drone " , other said " learn more. " Since I only have model airplanes, and don't own a drone, I didn't see the need to go further.

I would love to believe that only the quad copter drones are affected, as that is the root of all problems, to that end I believe that FAA FAQ sheets eludes to that...
See the attached PDF I downloaded from the FAA site.........hmmmm all I see are quad copter examples Very interesting.....
I wonder how these government employes feel about writing documents pertaining to toys instead of doing there real job dealing with full scale aircraft opreations?

I think the FAA is going down the wrong path, they should be dealing with the Canadian government to see about registering the Canadian Goose
They fall within the 1/2 Lb and under 55 Lb rule, and birds are a much greater threat to full scale operations than our model aircraft.

I can say this for a fact: I've never, ever had a neighbor call my PZ T-28 a "drone". But as soon as my DJI Phantom comes out, it's "Hey, cool, where'd you get the drone?"
Not saying the FAA sees iit this way, but to John Q. Public, "drone" = multi-rotor flying and hovering contraption, not an rc airplane, jet, or 'normal looking' helicopter. Hell, even my wife called the Phantom my "drone-a-copter-thingy."

^^^^ Exactly.
So those saying, "hey, the website says register your drone here", "but I don't have a drone, just airplanes", they're incorrectly agreeing with John Q. Public that "drone" = multi-rotor flying and hovering contraption. As you state, the FAA means by "drone", if you're not physically in the thing flying it around, but instead control it remotely with no human in the flying apparatus, it's a "drone."

Those are the ones that they (hopefully) make their revenue from fines off of . . .

Andy, AMA has said multiple times that they are not going to compel people to register, meaning the AMA will not require CDs to check and I suppose no plan to put it into the safety code.
Now your friendly club mates, they might think differently (and some do)
EDIT IMHO, in the absolute worst case scenario, we will still be able to fly like we do today, just not at as many fields (maybe a LOT fewer) and maybe have to get an FAA altitude waiver, similar that granted to High Power rocketry. But this would be a long way away, years maybe. (much sooner if one of these "flying tripod" morons takes down an airliner or something, God forbid)
In fact in certain ways, the situation we are facing is at least a bit like high power rocketry. They ended up needing a form of graduated license(s) and FAA clearance.

I'd be surprised if clubs don't make it a mandatory requirement along with how they already make AMA a requirement to fly at their facility. I too went to the FAA site and noticed that they only address the registration for "drone" and only have a picture of a drone, no fixed wing a/c. In the past I've seen the r/c stuff for sale at like Circle K, 7-11, and that stuff is really small and very light. I'd be surprised if one of those is even a half pound.

My belief is that the FAA is acting outside it's constitutionally mandated authority since congress placed limits on the FAA dealing with models. I guess time will tell.

Oh yea don't ya see this is the way the game is played....Congress says don't mess with our hobby.....FAA goes along until there some glorified reasons (drones/quads) to say OK here you go all aircraft in the sky have to be register for a measly 5 bucks. Now Congress has a choice to say the Executive Branch/FAA has exceeded it's authority or OK this is really nothing new or regulatory as we have been identifying our aircraft all along with the AMA #. Or, should Congress choose to override FAA then any incidents will be at their door/steps not FAA & now on to the Judicial Branch. I suppose AMA has filed the first suit.......

I think our biggest challenge will be 'those guys' at the field that don't seem to be happy unless they are unhappy.
I can see they will be a bigger issue than the FAA in their crusade to make all of us 'tow the line'. I call them Field Trolls. We all know one.
