I have advised my friend to replace his P 70 with a P 80 for a little more thrust and for quicker acceleration. I have some hands on time with P70 but none with P 80. My impression is that P 80 is a for sure a pretty substantial improvement when it comes to time to accelerate. It takes his P70 about 3.5 to 4 seconds to start making some useable power when going from idle to full throttle with the stick and about 7 to 8 seconds to reach full RPM.
Is my impression of the P 80 correct that it is a substantial improvement over P 70 ???

Ok so maybe this isnt the engine to get. What affordable engine in the same thrust range is a better choice ? K80 or K100 ? P90 and 100 and Rabbit are beyond his budget. Looking to stay as close to 1000 to 1200 or maybe 1300. Obviously shopping the used engine market.

I ran my BARF with a legacy P-80, then a P-70, then a P80SE. By far the best performance was the P-80SE, it was a match made in heaven.
The old P-80 had the slowest spool up time, but the P-70 wasnt far behind.
You could deffintely see an improvement on the SE version, plus it had 6 more lbs of thrust over P-70.

If it was me, I would go with the Jet Munt Vt80. The fastest throttle response of all current turbines, 18Lbs of thrust, great thrust to weight, very efficient, and less than $2000.

Legacy p70 and p80 are very reliable engines if the slow spool time isn't an issue, there is a small trick to make them more responsive by increasing the idle speed few thousands, trust me it made a big difference

We have P80SE ( carf rookie ) and P70 ( bobcat xl ), runs on diesel/jeta1 ( 70% / 30% ), 2 great engines, runs absolutely smooth, flawslessly, but, different generations, spool up/down on P70 more slower than P80Se.
Nowadays, not an good idea or deal buy an P70, but, if i have an great deal on P70, i buy it !!!

The P-80 SE i have was in a bandit ARF for 4 yrs and has i think 52 HRS on it now and still ran great the last time it was in a plane. I had one 25HR service done and passed with a clean bill of health.
Neither of these motors were ever in any fatal crashes. If interested i can bring them to Mississippi AB.
