Can anyone tell me where I can get the material to make a good thermal blanket to help insulate the interior aft portion of a jet where the tailpipe will be situated? It will be a bifrucated tailpipe BTW. Thanks in advance. Ken H

[sm=punching.gif] You can use wing skinning glass cloth. Just cut into strip about 2 inches wide and wrap around tailpipefrom back to front seal joints/edges with Ali tape. This works well, it is light and cheap.

Do a search on a product called "fiberfrax". As I understand it, it is 1/8" thick ceramic felt and will withstand 1000C or more without heat transmission via conduction for a significant length of time.

I am using Thermo-Tec in my gas powered Cap232 , where I run a tuned pipe inside the wooden fuse.
I have just wrapped the entire pipe, and you can always touch it with yuor hands.
It is not very light though, and I suspect you can use some heavy fiberglass cloth with similar results.

I also have a sq.yard of Nomex that is aluminized on one side. It is used for firemens clothing, welding blankets,
and other fireshielding. Think this would be nice stuff to use on my jet.

The fiberfrax seems to work well (I'm using it to pad my engine mounts), but it is somewhat fragile. If you remove & replace it very often, it falls to pieces. But it is cheap.

Hard to tell without doing a comparison, but I guess BVM sell usable products;-)

The products I have at hand, have been given to me by dragracing friends,
and anything "given" that works, suits my budget fine.

The tape works fine, but keep in mind the GLUE on the tape will catch fire with almost any hot start. Then tape itself can cause your plane to burn!!!!!! I would go with the fiberfrax glued on with High temp RTV (Silicone)

Turbulence

Here's the brief on how to use the BVM insulation blanket.
Make a paper template that covers the upper 1/3 of the fuselage above the tailpipe. Transfer that template to the ceramic insulation material, and using sharp scissors, cut the ceramic to shape. Snatch a piece of aluminum foil from the kitchen when your wife's back is turned. Then, glue the aluminum foil to one side of the ceramic with hi-temp RTV from the auto parts store. Trim the foil, allowing 1/4" oversize on all sides. The aluminum foil is shiny one one side....that is the side I always leave out. Fold the edges over the ceramic about 1/4". Trial fit this blanket into the upper part of the fuselage, and when you are satisfied with the fit, glue it in with the hi-temp RTV, aluminum side toward the tailpipe.
That's it. No tape required....no adhesive to burn.

The wing glass works well, i just put ali tape on the seams, friends of mine have put tape all over. It is up to you and what weight you can carry. either way it works well. On my current project, L39 with Wren44, i have no insulation on the tailpipe at all just use bypass air. Hope that helps.
