Default Beginner Questions

Hi, im 19 years old and am very interested in getting into this part of the hobby. From what i've read and heard the Byron design F-16 is a perfect 1st jet model as well as being my favorite aircraft . What I am wondering is are these airframes or maybe copies of these F-16s available still, surely somone other than byron or their new owners made copies of the original during the period of byrons demise to the new companies opening.
Overall Im looking to have a F-16 design ducted fan jet that probably has a glass fuse and wont cost me an extreme amount of cash. Any info or ideas

Mike

Yeah, that is an option, just thought the byrofan gives better grass strip performance and also might be a wee bit cheaper.

Default Here you go.

Many of Byron's models, including the F-16, are now sold by Iron Bay models, at http://www.ironbaymodelcompany.com/

My personal opinion is that you would be far happier with the Yellow Aircraft F-16. If memory serves the Byron has a huge "cheater" hole in the bottom of the fuselage that is unsightly at best. The Byron fan setup, with the pipe going forward into the fuselage creates a problem with heat around areas where radio equipment and wiring is installed. The pipe forward arrangement makes for a nasty, oily, greasy mess inside the fuselage. The Byron has foam wings that are only glassed and not sheeted with balsa. While they can initially be made to look nice, these wings are extremely susceptible to hanger rash and dents from your fingers in normal handling. It wont take long for them to start looking "war weary" unless you are extremely careful while handling and transporting the airframe.

Again, this is just my opinion setting forth the reasons why I would choose the Yellow Aircraft F-16 over the Byron.

Another option that you can.t go wrong with is the TGA F-15 Ultra Eagle III. Its well known as the perfect Ducted fan trainer Jet. They have Dynamax powered and Byron powered . Check out www.tgajets.com. They also have every support item for each version. Best of all they have the best prices and will give additional discounts on all the items you purchase. The more items you combo together the more money you save. My Friend saved a bundle when he got his F-15 package and I got my Topcat FREE with the combo I got. Good Luck and Welcome to the exciting world of R/C Jets.

now if you want affordable to start.. get a balsa usa enforcer and convert it. you can get into a jet completely for less than the price of a kit. This is commonly called a Byro -blaster........and some have even put turbines on them.
If you want a semi-scale jet and can't find the byron f16(watch Ebay) then go with Top Gun f15. And try to find some help so you first jet goes together right and doesn't weigh alot.
Good Luck

Thanks guys, all very helpfull. Ive been trying to look at the TGA link but it goes to some isp homepage, Another thing, is it worth buying a second hand ducted fan model or is it safer starting from new. By safer im meaning, do the fan units/engines in ducted fans get excessive wear from the high rpm there running at. Im sure these questions have been asked thousands of times before..

Get the TGA F15 with the Dynamax set up! I think that this is a much better plane! I had a Byron F16 and hated the fact that the engine was inverted ( never could get it to idle right!) and it was very messy...........

The TGA with Byron has the engine upright.

Still a bit messy but much more user friendly.

Still better for grass, too
