Jamie, great news on the Kingcat. Sharing tent may cost you a flight on the new bird. Nascar boys will be there flying new turbine powered F86's, a first for us. We are leaving around 1:00. Only a three hour drive.

Steve, You're such a wussie. Get that jet ready to fly!!!

Well, here are some pictures from the first day:

NASA's Langley Research Center boys showed up to prove they knew how to spend taxpayer money. These first pics are of thier neat toys. They pretty much had a dream set-up with a trailor and this white pick-up.

Of course, BVM had to show he could spend just as much money as NASA all on his own without taxpayer support and he brought a great variety of planes, along with a large motor coach, SUV, and trailor. As always, Bob's stuff was top-notch.

F-15s made a strong showing this year with at least four or five of them milling around. The ARF Skymaster F-15 was an impressive machine and it's pilot put on a good show multiple times throughout the day. The soon to be rare Airmagic F-15 was wholly impressive; nice panel lines on the wings, great overall scheme and finish, and outstanding flyer. And, of course, there were a few TGA F-15s too. Impressive little planes in that they seem very easy to fly, for ducted fans. As a matter of fact, they didn't want to come out of the air and they floated and floated and floated. Nice little planes. On the other extreme, a Byron F-15 rounded out the F-15 crowd and, as always, was impressive just because it is so big!

Not too many F-16s this year. These two large planes (1/6 scale) came down from the DC area and the (little) one is my YA F-16A. Mine isn't quite done yet and I didn't see either of thier jets fly, so no F-16 flying this year. Oh, wait a minute----a little Kyosho F-16 (shown in the Byron F-15 picture above) made a valiant attempt at a flight, but I heard it suffered from excessive crosswind on take-off and didn't get too far.

The local guys, Jack, George, Mike, Joey, Steve, Doc and others made a good showing and held their own against those who came in from out of town. These guys exhibited both good flying and some nice models.

The pit area was alway bustling and there was never a moment without a plane in the air.

Unfortunately, my camera ran out of power before I could get some close-ups of the planes on the other side of the ramp, but here are a few that show the wide variety of planes that came out for this year's event.

Check out the nice paint job on the red KingCat. The detail was something that had to be seen in person to appreciate. Hat's off to its owner on what I'm sure was a tedious job.

F-86s also made a nice showing this year with at least four planes. I didn't get a shot of the "Minuteman" and "Skyblazers" planes that were here, but got some pics of two others. I really thought the "Fly Safely" scheme was unique and this plane would definately stand out in a crowd of F-86s--there are a lot of Minuteman, Skyblazers, yellow stripe, and checkerboard F-86s out there! Additionally, the guys from Raleigh, Anthony W. and his friend (???? forgot the name) put a lot of detail work into these planes and they also have to be seen up close and in person to be appreciated.

This had to be my favorite plane at the show. I usually go for the F-16s and F-15s, but this USS America F-4 really caught my eye. The owner did a magnificent job putting his plane together and he picked a rarely used scheme to finish his plane in. Back when I was a butter bar in AFSOC I spent a few glorious months off Haiti on that old heap of a carrier, USS America, affectionately referred to as "the Big Dog" by all who sailed on her, and I think that personal experience swayed my thinking.

Anyway, this was truly a fine plane and I'm sorry I didn't get to see it fly.

This is one of Bob's guys and he put on the better demonstrations of the day. Although he flew multiple planes, he did his best work with this Thunderbirds F-100. The plane had great presence while it was in flight and this guy didn't make any mistakes with it; his demonstrations and landing with this plane were the best I saw today. One of Bob's Blue Angel's F-4s was up at the same time and those who were watching it instead of this F-100 really missed somthing special.

Thanks to the US Navy for allowing the club to use Fentress for this event. Thier crash rescue guys also kept us fed and watered by selling hot dogs, burgers, chips and drinks with their rolling gag-and-puke too.

Special thanks to Frank and his crew for pulling this thing together and moderating today's flying.

Oh yeah; here are a few pics I forgot to use earlier.

Sorry for no inflight pictures. My camera takes a split second to write the image to the chip and this made it nearly impossible to take inflight pictures. I tried leading the planes, but most of my shots came out like this one.

Hopefully, somone else got some good flying images and will post them.

What a great weekend and turnout, 45 registered pilots and about 90+ aircraft. The youngster neeling with the F-100(above) is Dave Malchione Jr, he can really put on a show, as some might put it, "He's got mad skills" He also won Best Military scale for his F-100. The awards went as follows,

Top Gun (JPO Award)-- Tony Massiello- F-4 and King cat
Pilot's choice--Todd Witkoff-Eurofighter 3D
Military Scale--Dave Malchione Jr-BVM F-100
Best Finish-- Jaime Snipes-BVM Kingcat
Best Sport aircraft-- Glen Robinson-BVM Black Adversary Bandit
Best Electric--Richard Boyington- V1000 Turbo Glider
We also celebrated the 40th wedding anniversary of Rose and Leo DeRosa
BEST OF LUCK ROSE AND LEO.

The only incident of the whole weekend was on Sunday when Mike Lescher crashed his beautiful BVM F-4 Phanthom on landing approach, the wind Sunday was unpredictable, he flew the F-4 all day saturday without a hitch. Sorry Mike, All in all it seemed everyone had a great time and I would like to thank all of those who attended for being exceptional sportsman, this is what really makes this a truly great hobby.

Thanks again

Frank, George, and everyone else local to Fentress ...

Thanks for a great weekend of flying! I had a blast as did the rest of the Raleigh gang that I'm sure will chime in with some "puppy love". C'mon, guys ... you've gotta post the video clip!

It was great meeting you guys ... we'll be back. Great facility and event ...

Jamie
