Default PPG 2042 Clear

Has anyone shot with this stuff? I just shot some on a couple of pilots station plates for MAB and was amazed at how quickly it tacked up. It took me about 10 minutes to clean up the gun and the stuff was not even tacky.I shot a light dust coat and one heavy coat. The surface felt green but it was dry and not sticky. I guess I will shoot a heli canopy in the next couple of nights and see how it does before trying it on a jet. Any comments?

David,
We go through 4-6 gallons a week here in the shop. You can use an accelerated catalyst that will speed up the cure time considerably. We use DCX61 and DT reducers cocktailed for the correct booth temp. Thinning up to 400% and increasing the air pressure at the gun will really lay it out level.
This clear system was designed for small repair jobs in collision repair : you can apply the final clearcoat and then bake at 160 degrees for 20 minutes. Once cooled, you can actually wet sand and polish the finish. Amazing product.

BTW, my KC should arrive by the end of May. See you at Winamac?

Best regards,
Ron Ballard

David,
Ron actually turned me on to the 2042 material and it sprays great! It handles just like the 2021, only quicker cure time ect...

If you are in a real big hurry, you may want to look into 3000 series clearcoat. From what I understand, this is the newest material to hit the shelf. The kicker is as follows:
2nd coat - within five minutes
Dust free - Within ten to fifteen minutes
You can wet sand and buff within one and a half hours!

You don't need any extra heat and the clear coat is high viscosity, almost like water already.

I sprayed some tonight and was amazed at how smooth it layed out and how quickly it dried.
One coat gives you somewhere around 2mils.
May be worth checking into. Ron probaly has more info since he is around these materials all of the time.
Good Luck,

Ron,

I will be at Winimac. I wasn't that concerned with a glass smooth finish on these pilot stations but I was amazed at how quickly this stuff was dust "immune" I thinned it to 200% and layed it on pretty heavy. I am going to try and spary a few test pieces before I shoot it on my latest project.

David,
You need to quit making the prettiest and shinniest pilot stations and get back to work on the Hun!!

This 300 stuff sounds cool.

I know! I was going to use catalysed paint on the colors but I did not want to wait on it to dry so I shot base coats with DBC and cleared it then went to bed......they don't look THAT pretty!

My only concern with the faster drying times is that it seems to me that you could get an area that does not get good coverage and orange peels. In the past I could go back over it again with more clear, then spray it with straight reducer and "melt" it smooth. THis stuff seems to dry so quickly that you can't do that, mind you my spraying has gotten a little better.

David,

PPG has a product that has been around for a long time called DX830 Universal Blender. This is a VERY HOT REDUCER. If you happen to get a dry edge or area that you feel will not wet sand and polish out, dump the clear from the gun, (do not clean the gun) pour a bit of 830 into the cup, agitate to mix with the remaining clear and dust a coat over the affected area. BE CAREFULL, this stuff is touchy.
We use it here in the shop for blends, for example : after refinishing a quarter panel, this system allows us to blend to the roof without refinishing the complete roof and opposite quarter.

Best regards,
Ron Ballard
