Paul, I am 99.9% sure that the MW-44 is indeed the smallest commercially available mass production turbine engine. Emphases being on AVAILABLE!!!

Some one in the USA is doing a turbine engineering corse at a university ( cant remember the name of the uni) made the smallest turbine in the world. It isn't being used in anything and can't be purchased, as it is a one off. Made purely for experimenting with[8D]

It is 1.5 inches in diameter and dose 500,000 rpm [:-]. That’s all I know about it at this stage and is from a very reliable source. I will ask my engineering mate who knows the guy and get more info and hopefully some pics.

Well I thought the smallest was that DARPA/MIT turbine on a chip that was in the news 3 or so years ago. It was REALLY tiny and did one or two MILLION RPMs.

Are we going to see tiny 'star wars' kinda futuristic jet planes soon???? The ones that can be flown in indoor places etc. Technology is really going crazy!!!

What do you mean by on a chip?
Was it a real turbine though that used A1 jet fuel?
1-2 million RPM ? that very fast.

From memory... no, it did not burn Jet A. I think it burned butane.

Chart 16 of 75 in the presentation that UK Flier's link brings up is the project I spoke of. It was 2 million RPM.

That's not a turbine though. The Jet-Ex were more of a model rocket engine.

That is some pretty amazing stuff. 2 million RPM is mind blowing what the hell are they using it for?

I im looking for the smallest RC turbine,
but still that is some impressive stuff.

So far this is the smallest one found by SJN nice work.

put two of those in this new yellow Electric F-14

I think that the research for the one on a chip was in the development of a gas generator to generate power for micro UAVs or something like that. I'm pretty sure it was never intended to develop a direct "jet-type" propulsion source, just a way to generate electricity.

quote from the MIT website who are doing the research

"The devices would be capable of producing 10-50 watts of power or 10-30 grams of thrust. Applications include battery replacement and micro-airplane propulsion. "

The inlet is at the top of the picture

Mhale 71 If you look at the pic there is an intake but it is very small.

Wonder how much power it produced???

I reckon at the rate technology is growing we will be able to have a power generator ( like this 2 million rpm thing) on board planes e.g ( an electric jet), that produces its own electricity and lots of current thus replacing the need for batteries. This is pretty advanced but look at 10 years ago and think of what we have today compared to then.

I also maddened my e-jet today. This is my jet for in town when im not at the strip flying my big ones. dose a respectful 185 km/ph

On the 1950's about 4 -4.5 min and on the 1300's 3 min. That is at full throttle the whole time.

It can be flown slow but it is designed mainly for speed. And it dose that very well. A bungie launch is required to get it up.

If fly OS .91 jets and am getting my first turbine jet soon from a sponsorship deal.

This little Electric-jet (pyranha) is just for simple, clean fun when im not flying my big jets. And when I say fun I mean fun

I would not get to excited about MIT's engine, it does not run.
So far Mdot claims to have the smallest running turbine, has anyone seen it run?
