Default An Engineering Question about the Rookie

Hello RCU Jet folks!

Have I got a engineering question about the Rookie for you.

Joe Brozo, James Love, Les Morrow, and I were talking this morning about the Comp-arf Rookie when I brought up, basically the following question: "On the 'roo, they had a engine pod so that you could fly it with a O.S. .91 and a pusher prop. Think the same thing can be done for the Rookie? Or for that matter, stick a OS .91/Dynamax fan inside the Rookie?" ( close too, but not the exact quotes mind you! )

To wit, Les let me have a wreck Rookie rear fuselage that he salvage from a fellow club member's accident that we can use as a engineering mockup. Such as to mount a DF inside to see what needs to be done to the structure, etc.. With a DF installed, the Rookie wouldn't have the split ailerons(and neded servos), or the extra air tank for the brakes; and use the wire landing gears instead of structs to keep the weight down.

Any thoughts?

That's about the funniest thing I've heard all day. [sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif][sm=biggrin.gif][sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif]

Don,
I would think that it could work with the pusher setup. Would probably just have to make a plate that would mount the engine far enough back to clear the trailing edge. Should get enough cooling air coming in the side inlets. The ducted fan might have problems sucking enough air through those things, though. Not an expert on DF.

I would say go for it. Sounds like a good project. But, you gotta let us know how it turns out. Might be a cheaper alternative for those that long to be jet drivers (like me). LOL.

Shanksow, you will be disappointed with this setup. better to spend a little more kilodollars and start right with a turbine, or else, a proper ducted fan project.

I say go for it...Remember that the Roo and the Rooki is the same almost the same airplane. And the old Roo was design for Sofia 850 turbine with 4.5 kg trust. Just build it light and you are going to have a fun airplane to fly. You dont need all that trust for that airplane. So go for it and have fun.
