Skymaster Gripen Almost there

RE: Skymaster Gripen Almost there
Just add full rudder once grounded..
Ore, wait it to slow down by itselves......
Actually, it`s the highlight of the year for me.
No restrictions ([8D]), no end of runway..... I just do what I desire...
On sunday, we`ll gather on the ice. Props, and one jet..
This is really something... Ice is the ultimate runway. Can`t get any flatter than that....
(Get your but to Fagernes Airshow this year, 10-12th of March) Most recommended..

when ice is cold enough, it is not really all that slippery .. I remember being 7 years old, and my father letting me drive his Buick station wagon at over 100 mph on a5' thick iced lake in Vermont .... that’s when I learned how to do doughnuts

"You don't stop it...you wait for it to stop!"
We have our "Blueball" flyin this Sunday and I was kinda kickin' around bringing the Reaction 54 out with skis on it. Trouble I was having was how to stop it before it got to the end of the "good snow"

I`ll bet you`re good at it!
I had my first drive on ice, with my brothers Mustang Mach 1. 455 Big Block, double Hemi carburetors engine, still not suited for Norwegian ice...
But a good memory, for sure..
I plan to make a flat down sledge, ment for one person. Small. wide, simple and light..
Three skates are modifyed to take the grip on the ice.
Steering on the front one.
Two 16 kilo jet engines ..
Laying on the stummack, the jet engines will ensure the propulsion..
A military drone chute will serve any emergency brake...
I guess, easily 200 Km/h.. Fun.
Sorry for getting out of the subject here.. I`ll be back on the Gripen settings soon.
Ice is fun for sure..

Your Gripen looks great, Gudmund!
Tell us more on how it performed... Was it smoother this time?
What lake are you flying from in the pics? The site looks great
The ice has not been safe enough down here around Oslo yet because there has been too much snow isolating the ice. But it's starting to look better now. I hope there will be a runway cleared for snow within a few weeks. Then we will do some serious flying too.

RE: Skymaster Gripen Almost there
Had seven flights with it. Two with elevons, five with ailerons and elevators.
I would recommend the split version as I had it, ailerons at the outer, and elevators on the inner + ailerons also functional as elevators, but halvf the throw of the inner elevators.
This allows you to slow it down for landing, setting the four surfaces in crow / butterfly position.
The gripen has a much to high approach speed, and therefore needs a brake of some cind.
Four hours is all you need to customize the elevons into a scale setup.
It also flys much smoother with small separate ailerons, plus inbuildt safety if one servo fails.
However, four minutes into the first flight today, interference locked my Gripen in hold position.
App. 100 meters, 80 % thrust at a 60 deg dive angle and plenty of speed, transformed the Gripen to the most spectacular fireball I`ve ever seed live...
Needless to say there is nothing left, as the ice today was moore solid than asphalt.
Small fragments of 3 x 3" is all there`s left.
Even the soft plastic pilot, looked like it had exploded.
Absolutely everything is torn apart, and there are no chance dynamite could have done a moore thourough job..
The plane hit the ice 300 meters away from anyone, as I would no way fly with people spread allover the frozen lake.
Everybody was behind me, as a safety-precaution.
Maaaan, I`d like to se that inpact in replay, or have a picture of it...
Still hearing the weird boomy sound on impact, as the ice functioned as a combined speaker and amplifier..
This really showed us what we`re dealing with..

Gee, Gudmund! That's too bad - the Gripen was looking very good!! []
Today, I have just made a rudder on my F-16 and fixed my SU27 after a small fire at Rena, but your don't have anything to rebuild!![:-][:-][:-]
Well, I guess now you have time for a new project - weren't you planning to build a big Hawk?
By the way, do you know if there are any Skymaster dealers in Norway now??
and, did the turbine survive??
Anyway, Happy new year, Gudmund - keep your spirit up!!!

Oh no Gudmund[&o]
How could it happen? I know how you feel and I also know the sound of impact against the ice.
Was the turbine also destroyed?
Keep your head up and get working on your new projects buddy!

Yep, nice plane. But S H I T happens.
It`s just to face reality, and accept things as they are.
Diffuser, front-cover and starter is wrecked, as a brief look confirms. Maybe moore.
Rx and all the servos are also history.
But I just make myselves thoughts about the very thin line between success and failure in this game.
I have a scanner on my transmitter (MPX 4000, and a 12 channel IPD RX), wich denys transmitting if the channel is taken, or discovers activity near my channel.
No activity observed, but four minutes later, disaster struck regardless of the top notch gear...
What is what my conserns are now, not the loss of the JAS 39.
I said a very thin line, and ment this can be read as a reminder next time we make a knife-edge manouver, in five meters altitude at +300 km/h. The slightest glitch on the elevator at this point, can make a disaster beyond our imagination..
Or putting 10 000 Euro into a model, on a regular salery...
Something to think about..

RE: Skymaster Gripen Almost there
What a shame on such a nice model. I'm glad no one got hurt. I really hope it isn't that lunatic with the jammer that got loose . . .
My thoughts are with you.
I'm really looking forward to the next generation radio equipment with dynamic frequences . . .
I feel the pressure building up for my virgin flight of the Gripen . . . I'm in the process of making semi scale main retracts. The picture below shows a hasty sketch in SolidWorks based on my wooden mock up. The intention is to slide in a BVM Duro strut in to the hollow section to be locked in position by two set screws (allowing adjustment for toe in).
Also the second part of the hinge is missing. It will have a bracket/platform that fit's straight in to the original mounts of the model.
It is operated by a single Ø15 air cylinder with 40mm stroke.

RE: Skymaster Gripen Almost there
does anyone have an idea of the speed range of the gripen? i also see skymaster has a training CG point of 110 mm. can i get some thoughts on that? i've never flown a turbine yet and i'm holding off flying this one till i have some time on them . thanks for all the input. it's been a lot of help. thank God for RCU lol oh.... it is OK to say GOD here , right ? lol
i see also there was talk of splitting the elevons . i was going to do something different as far as a speed brake. i was going to put one on the bottem of the fuse . though not scale, it sure would be nice to be able to slow the beast down.

RE: Skymaster Gripen Almost there
Hi:
I have a Gripen with a BMT-120 in it. Its speed range is from 35mph to 190 tracked on a radar gun. I would recommend a CG about 140-145, I have tried many different settings and this seems to fly the best. You do not need a speed brake on the Gripen, try giving it 5 to 7 clicks of up trim, it will fly an approach nice and slow at this setting. You will also know instantly when you are too fast, as the model will climb.
