The A/C 767 was a good save but so was the 747 incident when all four engines flamed out and were seriously damaged over Indonesia due to the ingestion of volcanic dust.

Not once, but twice!

Actually, after they got the engines restarted, they climbed back into the crap and started losing the engines again.

The RAM guys had plans, at one point years ago, to incorporate a ring of magnets into the back-plate of a compressor to in effect create a built-in alternator in a turbine. Lars at Simjet actually did it. He spoke about it at Fla Jets '99 or '00. IIRC, he said that it worked, but the voltage was so damn high! It was dangerous and scared them and they never pursued it further.

That would be a pretty obvious outcome considering the RPM's these engines turn!

PS. The RAM guys also intended for the thing to double as the starter motor. In other words the compressor and the coils in the turbine would act as a brushless motor to spin up the core for starting. Then, once running, you reverse that and generate power.
