Default K& b ENGINE BREAKIN

PLASE HELP A NEWBIE: I have a K&B .82 engine that I need to break in. I am unable to locally find jet fuel or fuel with more than 17 % oil mixture. Does anyone have any suggestions on breaking in this engine and raising the oil mixture in fuel that is local? Could I use a test stand with a large prop? I can get Omega 10 % nitro that has 17% synthetic/castor blend. Should i use castor oil to increase oil mixtue or some other type of oil? Thanks for your help.

Castor oil will work. In fact, you can mix methanol with castor oil to any % you want and you don't even need any Nitro for the breakin.

I would use an 11/8 prop or something like that. Keep the RPM's around 15 to 20 thousand something like that. Burn a gallon through the thing and you should be good to go.

I PERSONALLY use wildcat premium xtra (airplane) 10% or 15% nitro with 18% oil blend. It says 80% is synthetic oil and 20% degummed racing castor on the jug.. then I add 4oz of Klotz degummed racing castor to a gallon and shake well and shake some more.. I also HEARD breaking the engine in the enviroment (mounted in jet) is also good because thats the way its going to be used anyways.. So all your settings and such are constant to what your trying to accomplish. make sure your using LARGE fuel tubing and fittings... hope this helps.. btw.. check K&B website to see if you can download a manual for that engine and check the FAQ section for help with general questions like this..(who knows best than the engine manufacter themselves..)

I heard that from the owner of JHH too. Turbine oil doesnt burn away like castor so it gives you more protection in case of over leaning.. and your not degrading the fuel by only 1-2oz of oil too.. Good call!

Hello guys,
I am probably going to run into the fuel availability issue as well. I have used Powermaster fuel for years with good results in all of my prop planes. I get a good per case price and was wondering if I could make a suitable blend for an OS 91 DF. If I get their 5% nitro blend of synthetic and caster at about 16%. Can I add a certain amount of turbine oil for an everyday flying mix on a broken in engine? Is turbine oil toxic as I think I recall hearing? What precautions should I take when mixing it? Where can I get it?

Thanks in advanced for your assistance!
Anthony

Powermaster makes a good 5% DF fuel that would be perfect for your OS.91.

Anthony, At the moment I'm running my OS91 with Powermaster 5%/16% mix I do add 8oz. of Klotz racing oil per gallon and then I shake it and shake it some more to make sure it's well mix, so far it has been nothing but fun not a single problem with the engine and power is excellent my last glow plug McCoy # 9 lasted for about 25 flights I decided to change it because it has been there for to long and just as a precaution.
The reality is that you don't have to use more nitro in your engine 5% is just fine and your engine and glow plug last longer because the low nitro % in the fuel, yes you can use more nitro but soon enough your engine is going over heat and you will be changing glow plugs more often than you my want to. Forget about the turbine oil you just don't need it for now ( as I have used it before with good results also, more on that later ) If you need the engine instructions lat me know I have them, run the engine on the fan that you are going to use and run it for about a gallon like it was suggested here before it takes a long time to brake in.

Hope this helps.

I always broke-in my OS.77s and .91s in the airframe. I ran about one full tank (20 - 24 ounces) on the ground and then went flying. Why waste all of that fuel on the ground?

one tip for you all. when you get everything set up on an engine for a fuel you are using, don't change. if you change fuels and or oil content you will need to take time to reset your bottom end.

Very good tip Pat.

The K&B takes a long time to brake in, on the OS91 I run 3 tanks on the fan, two diferent angines.
