Default LIPO batteries for the ECU's

Anyone using LIPO's other than the known Duralites for their ECU packs? I keep seeing the new generation for Thunder Power and KOKAM 2-cell packs and was wondering if anyone is using them.

The project I am thinking of putting them is my F-14 which is ready for FJ. I started the engines and checked everything 100%. It is at 29lbs (which I believe is very light) but I wonder if I can reduce another lbs or so if I changed the nicads for the ECU's. 2 RAM 500's with GWM double taper pipes based on J. Wright experiments. Tremendous amount of power with the two engines running.

Thanks - Adil

I don't see why not....a volt is a volt. The only thing is that most of the guys flying Lipo's remove the packs from the planes while they are charging in case there should be a problem...which could very inconvenient in a jet. The packs are very sensitive to overcharging and fire is a definite possibility. There is actually a product that is a small ceramic container to put the packs in while charging to contain a fire should an overcharge occur.

Adil,

After a little question asking i'll be useing a 2cell Kokam pack witha Kokam "Safety Guard "....stops you putting to much into the cell while charging & stops the cells dropping below their minimum voltage.

MW 54, Full autostart FADEC.

Hi Adil,
I am using two Kokam 2 cell high output Lipos in my BVM MIG-15. A reduction in weight was the main reason I am using them. One pack is regulated to 5.7volts and is just one of two separate power supplies for my radio and servos, the other is a 4.8v NiCad each has there own switch. My second 2 cell Kokam pack is connected to my JetCat P-80 ECU unregulated. It is rated at 1500ma. I have found that it is important to recharge between each flight especially the one connected to the ECU. Otherwise I am pleased with the performance of the packs. It has been my experience that the Lipo's just like Nicads need to be topped off all the time. Possibly if I had a 2000 plus ma Lipo pack for the ECU recharging wouldn't be so important.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I think, I'm going to try the Kokam 2000 packs as I have a couple. I will probably remove them to charge as it will be no problem - I made a hatch where the batteries are. I pretty much sacrificed the scale details for ease of servicing and use on this project. Below are some pictures of the hatch and the cockpit. The plane balances slightly nose heavy which I believe will be taken care of now. The culprit was the cockpit detail as it come out slighly heavier than thought. BTW, not a ounce of dead weight on this plane which I'm proud of as well

Regards,

Adil

Hello,

I use lipo's for all my turbines, a 2 cell 3300 for my Jecat P 120. A 4 cell 1550 for my AMT Pegasus and Mercury and a 3 cell 1250 for my simjet 1200 SPP.

They all work fine and the only thing you should check is that your low battery check is above the minumum of 3 volts per cell of your lipo pack.

The great advantage is the weight or extended capacity and sometimes both.

Greetings Han

I just installed on in my F-22( Kokam 2A, 2 cell for P-120). The bad side is it's between a fuel cell and the propane tank so charging inside the plane is out of the question. The other draw back is there's nothing to balance CG with

Hi Adil

Awesome job on the F-14! Sorry I did not get the photos of the gear doors for you on Bills F-14, I have not had an opportunity to take them yet. Bills was 30 dry i think, and it flew very well. If you want to talk on the phone re: All the stuff we found out on the F-14 turbine Ill PM you my phone #.

I have used 2000 2S1P Lipos from Kokam with success on PST-600R, Jetcat P-120, Jetcat P-70, Artes Super Eagle. For Simjet you need a 3S1P pack and I have been using Thunderpower 2100 packs with success. As Adil and Sideshow say you need to take them out of the airplane to charge for safety reasons. If you are careful they are not bad at all to deal with.

I think the product for the ceramic container is called the Battery Bunker. I have seen it in the marketplace on RCU. http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=73086

I've been using the li ion pack from Troy built models. It's a 4700 mah pack for $55
