RE: My A-10 Warthog Project
Looking good Paul. Looks like we are going to be doing a parallel rebuild, lol. With some help, a group effort by several club members really, we have the wing back together. Far less damage that yours though. Work on the fuse starts between Christmas and New Years when I have a week off. Since I have to do a lot of work on the fuse, I am going to relocate a few things to make it easier to work on and change the batteries.

RE: My A-10 Warthog Project
Life continues to get tougher for us builders; Top Flight has stopped selling the paint I originally used on my A-10, along with lots of other colors, apparently. [&o] I found something close and used it on the new flap, but I'll try to get a better match for the final coat and other touch-ups.
The reconnected wing sections have been reinforced and the flap linkages remade. I am now piecing together the wing sheeting puzzle pieces. The new flap is just placed there for the photo. It still needs final painting.

Structural repairs to the wing are all but complete. There are just a few minor items to be fixed. I have started to prepare the wing for a new coat of paint. I was hoping to just have to paint the areas around the new joints, but I quickly realized that I should repaint the whole plane. I was able to get mixed paint that closely matches the original, but it's not perfect. Also, a lot of surface area would have to be painted anyway. The decals have been masked.
Since I'm going to repaint everything, I decided to try to fill in the many gaps in the original finish. In spite of fiberglassing and multiple coats of primer/filler, I still had these gaps in the surface. In the future I'll just use UltraCote and paint that. Fiberglassing isn't worth the weight.

RE: My A-10 Warthog Project
Paul,
I have some updates for you.
First a list of repairs that were needed. Left wing at the gear pod, completely severed, gear pod broken as well. Horizontal stab broke from airplane as well as left vertical stab. Fuse over wing saddle cracked.
I was able to salvage the right vertical stab and repair the horizontal stab. Left vertical stab rebuilt from scratch. Got the first coat of paint on the repaired areas. Going to get the second later this week followed by the decals on the painted areas.
Just need to get the nose gear, air bottle, and batteries mounted. I also need to fix two servos that ate teeth and one that lost its connector in the crash.
Pictures below. Hope all is going well with yours.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the update. Good job on the repairs. It's a lot of work, I know! Since my last update I have painted the wing and have started on the fuselage. All the wing needs is a coat of clear and then I have to reinstall all of the hardware.
Keep us posted.

I see your A-10,
Very Wonderful RC!!
I really love that
I wanna make this A-10
but I can't make this size - used Jet engine
So, I will make A-10 used power source in duct fan. Smaller than your A-10
few days i search another site, blog,~ anybody Can't find BluePrints
So,can you send to me Blue prints?
If you can , Please send to e-mail[email protected] (you can't send to me, Please Send e-mail Say 'No')
I will Scale down your blueprints, and make this one this Wonderful RC
Thanks for read my Message.(English is very little ^^;

CGRC models makes a small kit perfect for ducted fans.
Try CGRC A-10

RE: My A-10 Warthog Project
FYI on cgrcjets.com. Chris has a new build thread on his new revised version and is adding more detail to this version 2. He is making all new molds. Cris is making a great jet and making new plugs and molds is a large time and money investment hence comes the price tag but really worth it if you can afford one.
Now to this is an alternate kit being offered by Wowplanes.com and is meant for EDF power. There are several build threads on this site and on RCgroups.with plenty of info. Check out your options and what you want to invest and go from there

RE: My A-10 Warthog Project
Hi JJY0623,
There are a number of different A-10 models that have made it into this thread over the years, but most are based on the original design by George Miller. Even Chris' beautiful work at CGRC began life as a foamie based on the George Miller design. The original plans are available from Scale RC Models and can be sent overseas (www.scalercmodels.com). The plans are copyrighted, so those of us who have them can't make them available by copying them. I for one plan to keep my set for a very long time!
Good luck with your project. Start a build thread here on RC Universe!
Thanks,
Paul

RE: My A-10 Warthog Project
Even though I'm working at a snail's pace, repairs to the A-10 continue. All I have to do with the wing is re-install the landing gear, servos and linkages. Otherwise, it's ready to go. Physical repairs to the fuselage are pretty much complete as well. I just need to fill in a few more dents and scratches. I'm preparing it for its fresh coat of paint. Masking the decals has been a bit of a chore. I first cover them with scotch tape and draw an outline. I put that on masking tape that has itself been stuck to wax paper. I then cut out the shaped mask, remove the wax paper and put it over the decal.
Thanks,
Paul

RE: My A-10 Warthog Project
Well, some things in life are just meant to take a while, and so it is with my A-10. With all of the repairs completed and all systems re-installed and tested, it was time for the post-repair maiden flight. It just wasn't meant to be. The good news is that the attached picture was taken after the attempt. Not only did I have a second chance at this, but I'll have a third at some point.
I was having a lot of trouble balancing the engines only to find that one of the throttle linkages had unattached from a carburetor. I had been concerned about those linkages and planned thorough testing and taxiing before attempting flight. Thank goodness it happened early, I never even got to the taxi stage. To make a short story shorter (I could say more about those engines), the time has come to abandon glow fuel and plan a conversion to electric. I have met my match, and lost.
Thanks,
Paul

Congratulations on seeing this one through. I thought perhaps you'd given up after the last updates. Glad to see it done!

Thank you, Will. I had not given up, but I did let many other projects distract me from this one.

I had the same problems with mine Paul. Believe me.....it's an art! Electric is the way to go.

Who knew that a single radio controlled model airplane project would become something of an ongoing lifetime project with twists and turns and also allow me to interact with a great many wonderful people, not the least of which is George Miller, the designer of this particular A-10 model? Another is Mike Beaulieu, owner of Scale R/C Models and copyright holder of the plans. Scale R/C Models is no longer in business and both George and Mike have given me permission to continue to make the A-10 plans available.
