Sorry that happened to you. Tough, tough call, cancelling the event. Never found out what happened?
Did this move to the new venue have anything to do with that?

That field...it's like...PARADISE. We fly from, like, a gulch cut in the swamp...the TORKS field, with all that concrete, dedicated solely to models, it brings a tear of joy to my eye. Look at that clubhouse!

Easy Tiger,

Appreciate your thoughts regarding last year. The decision was made easier when we considered what could happen if a jet got loose and went into the crowd that we usually have at our event. With that thought in mind there was really only one decision that could have been made.

The AMA has been at that site and no we have never found out what was causing the interference. The move to the new venue was specifically because of that problem. Now we have the FAA problem, but we have gone to a site WE control.

I appreciate your feeling about our club field. It is wonderful and our members appreciate it. Check out www.torks.com to see what the membership costs to belong. You probably won't believe it.

I will share your feelings with the membership Wednesday evening at our annual pre-event meeting. They need to know how others feel when they see our beautiful flying site.

Come visit us sometime.

I have an old TORKS decal from the seventies that someone gave me. A great club. Hope to visit someday.

The cancellation last year, that really WAS a tough call to make, I respect that.
The decision to move had nothing to do with the FAA, though?

As far as the field goes, you guys have no idea how good you have it! Not that you did not earn it, pavement does not grow on trees, I know, but...BOY, what a great place to fly. I bet you have 110 power, real bathrooms, a fridge, all that good stuff, too. We have some trees that serve as a bathroom(watch out for snakes) and once in a blue moon, the ice cream truck will stop by and charge us $2 for a bottle of water. Flat-out, I am jealous. Nice job, guys.

not to rub it in...

easytiger
we (torks) have a great field and a great bunch of guys. obviously the stuff you can see in the pictures, but yes we do have 110, a fridge, a stove,a grill, a pop machine, a watercooler, the bathroom is a porta-jon (not too bad), we also have 12 volt power pumped out to our workbenches. some other stuff too, but thats enough for now. its also a great field for gas/glow/turbine and electric flyers. there is a grass strip next to the paved strip.

I was just at an airport in Alabama today. I spoke with the airport manager regarding flying at the field. He said that it was interesting that I brought the subject up because he had a new regulation handed down by the state of alabama banning the use of all airports for model events whether they are cars or airplanes. He showed me the regulation, it was from some state aviation commission.

Yeah, you ARE rubbing it in!

Alabama aviation state commission?
Have any other FBOs gotten anything, from a Federal level?

I think I am going to sue EASYTIGER. He said the sky wasn't falling so I walked outside to have a look for myself and got hit by a piece of it. Fortunately, I was hit on the head so no permanent physical damage was done. However, pain and suffering and the mental anquish has been traumatic! I see unlimited checkbook jets in my future.

John,
My guess is the OLF fields used by the Navy don't fall under the guidance of the FAA. Lets hope not, those are great places to fly.

No, the OLFs are controlled by the Navy. I saw the reg in black and white...it affects all civil airports in Alabama. Is that NOLF Silverhill??? Ive been flying at NOLF Spencer, Santa Rosa, and Holley. I flew out at Silverhill one day...with Rob.

If I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times. NEVER go outside without a helmet. Micrometorites fall every day by the THOUSANDS. Stay inside if at all possible. Preferably in the storm cellar. And do NOT go outside without a helmet. Ever.
The bug I installed in Ghost Rider's home shows me that he is at present wearing a Malibu Barbie bicycling helmet. I did not know they came in adult sizes, must have been special ordered. Good call. Looks good on you, Ben!

It wont be long before you wont be able to buy a turbine motor or plane with out a lot of difficutly. Just look at the big rocket guys. Extreamly difficult to buy a big motor many many regulations.

I flew at Silverhill many years ago before the guys in Mobile ever discovered it... I lived in Daphne at it was a great place to fly and never crowded. It would be a GREAT site for a jet rally. Miles and miles of asphalt.

Perhaps, RC modelers and the AMA should lobby the DOD, USAF, the Department of Homeland Security and our local congressmen for specific FAA ssupport of RC and Jet RC modeling with the aim of developing the next generation of pilots for unpiloted remotely controlled aircraft.

The first day of the Heart of Ohio is in the record books.

40 plus registered pilots and over 200 flights.

Weather has been grey, but pilots flying and lovin' it !!!

General impressions are "why haven't you guys been having the event here (TORKS field) all along?"

Looking forward to a big Saturday and even better Sunday.

Will report more later.

I agree with Bill. What a FANTANSTIC FLYING FIELD. I just got back to Indian after having a blast at the event. Unfortunately I came home without my old reliable ROOKIE (Dumb thumbed it on my second flight of the day) but I was able to fly my F-16 later in the evening. Every airplane has an expiration date and after more than 400 flights on this airframe, I would say that I got a good return on my investment.

The guys that bought AMT also bought CAI and they are going to reintroduce the CAI line of models again. They also sponsored the “all you can eat pizza party” at the field after hours.

Thanks to all the TORKS members for a well organized event.
