Default Seagull wireless flight data system?

Hi.

I'm interested in the [link=http://www.eagletreesystems.com/Plane/plane.html]Seagull Wireless Flight System[/link] from Eagle Tree Systems and wonder if someone has tested it on jets?

I noticed on their web page that the transmitter is sold in two versions. One is on 900 mHz and 200 mw output for the US, and one is on 433 mHz and only has a output off 20 mw for the European market probably because of some laws. They state a range of 1 mile or greater with the 900 mHz 200mw transmitter, but doesn't say anything about range with the 433 mHz 20mw European transmitter.
I wonder if 20 mw will provide a range good enough for jets?

I would be tempted to buy the 900 mHz version anyway, but European mobile phones are on the 900 mHz band so there may be a collision there...

Anybody have some thoughs??

The 433 MHz systems typically have around a 3000 ft. range depending on the receiver's sensitivity rating, and the transmitter/receiver Seagull is using. Check out the link below. They have a good section on 433 MHz systems and the specs for range. See if Seagull lists the receiver's dBm sensitivity specs. anything around -100dBm is considered good. Linx systems chips are -116 dBm, which is very good. They claim over 3000ft range for the 270-450 MHz range. Check with your local regulatory agency for the use of a 900 MHz system in Europe. If you can use 900 MHz there, it would have far better range than the 433 MHz systems. At least 1 mile line of site; depending upon emi and interference from other 900 MHz systems of course.

Hi Ståhle!
I have had my eyes on this system for quite a while now. There is a UK dealer http://www.rc-log.co.uk/ that has them. Recently the UAV version of the logger has been advertised (but the price in Europe has not been advertised yet). The UAV system in more accurate on the altitude sensor compared to the standard Airborne system. It just happened to be a review in RC Jet Magazine of the standard Airborne system in a jet model. It was still working at 920 feet altitude. The maximum range was not further tested.

Hi Johan!

I red the article in RCJI too. Also noticed that they did not test the range...

What do you think about using the 900 mHz one here in Scandinavia, and look away from the rules?
Do you think we will have problems with interference from mobile phones?

Hello,

I'm just in the proccess of putting the wireless telemetry system in a jet. I am currently scratching my head a bit , or maybe banging might be a closer description, with the live mode. i.e I want a real time live output on a laptop, its working ok but the units are misbehaving, (i've got everthing in metric except my temperature that is 70°C at room temperature ????

Anyway, I think my transmitter placement may be a problem as it is quite far away from my reciever but is close to my ECU and the fuel pump, so I shall see how that goes.

watch this space.....

Hi Nick!

I am currently waiting for the release of the EU version with a new 200 mw 433 mHz transmitter for better range. I was told it would be availiable in a week or two.

Please let me know what you find out what causes the missbehaving units...
