Default Using a LiPo Battery for ECU

Hi guys,

I have a JetCat with Kero start and have been using the standard NiCad battery supplied with the JetCat engine to power the ECU with no problems - I get 2 or 3 starts with the NiCad.

When I try to connect a 4000mAh 7.4V LiPo battery from Duralite and change the settings in the version 5 ECU to "Battery: LiPo", I always get a failed start with the message: "Low battery".

I have tried 2 different LiPos. The batteries are fully charged. I have tried both settings for "Battery" in the ECU menu.

Has anyone had this problem when switching over battery types?

Hi!

I have never had a single issue with the lipos on my JetCats. With the new version I have set it to 2-cell Lipo and use a 2S1P 3200 Kokam. Bfore that I just had it on 6-cell Nicad without any problems, because the ECU will show low batt before you dmage your Lipo.

Make sure you have set it to 2-cell Lipo and not to 3-cell!

Maybe you want to check your Duralites is they can handle the power. If one pack (I recon it's a 2S2P) is stuffed, it might be to much power for the battery. It is not the kero-burner, it is the starter-motor which draws high current.

Greetz,

David

I have had problems with this also on the kero start with duralite batteries. So I switched to the Fromeco peerless series witch can handle a 13 amp continous discharge and they are 4800 mah. Duralite can handle I belive it is 6 or 7 amps continous.
I do know that we have a local guy flying with a 2s2p [4200mah] that I sold him for his kero start that also works fine.

just read on duralites website that their li-poly is only a 10c discharge rate, might be your problem i know people have been having good succes with fma cellpro and balance pro which are at least 15c discharge rate some are 20c. the starter motor statup and kero burner might be too much for 10c.

I use a Kokam 7.4v, 2 cell, 2100mAh, 20C discharge rate LI-po with great success.

Thanks guys. I guess thats the problem. I'm surprised at the (relatively) low discharge current considering how thick the wires are.

Hi!

I am pretty sure a 10C battery with 4 amps should handle the current during start-up. MAybe you check with Duralites or use a different charger and see how much you can discharge/charge.

Have a look at this thread, it seems that the Duralites are the problem.

I'm going to use 3700mAH NiMH on my kero start P80.

li-pos can be used, maybe not for the 180 or 200 just make sure you have a good capacity pack and 15c or 20c discharge rate 3000-4000 mah at those rates will be fine.

I've been using a Fromeco 4800 peerless pack on my jetcat P-120 for sometime. Not kero start. 13 amps constant draw. I got 12 flights one day and was not near the end of the pack. Fromeco is a HUGE cut above in my experience. If you need help give them a call. I'm only a satisfyied customer not a rep.
