I just went into a fire extinguisher store and they had a bunch in the back that they can no longer sell (illegal except for aviation use..) and picked up this dandy little unit.. (I've also got a 5 gallon water extinguisher if things get out of hand..)

It was made by Flag, but there is no other info about the manufacturer on the bottle.....

Halon ??????

No No No Halon is being removed in almost every country. It has been found to be one of the most damaging substances to our Environment. Google a Search under Halon.

CO2 is the way to go................................. It also allows U to just give ur Turbine a quick blast if U get a Fire without a Recharge.

With far less dramatics, Halon has been replaced by "Halatron", because of Halon's detrimental environmental effects.
As far as refillable Halon bottles go..........................
The only thing that will be ruined by Halon, is your pocketbook if you need a refill. A 13 lb. Halon bottle will set you back around/over $400.00 to service and refill it. (Firsthand knowledge....I have a reciept around here somewhere).

Why bother with Halatron or Halon? I have a couple of Halon bottles I'll sell you, if you want them. If I ever need to use them, I'm going to throw them away when empty, as I don't feel that it is cost effective to refill them.

A 5 lb. CO2 bottle refill goes for about $8.00 at a fire extinguisher shop. I paid $50.00 for a used 5 lb. CO2 bottle, charged, inspected, and ready to go.
Like Halon, CO2 won't cause any damage to turbine engines.

A replacement for Halon has been developed for aviation use and its called "Phostrex" and is being incorporated in the fire suppression system of the wonderful new Eclipse 500 VLJ. Its described on the Eclipse web site: WWW. ECLIPSEAVIATION.COM

Halon is a gas and works as well as CO2...I've used both. Advantages of Halon is that the fire extinguishers are much smaller, and they have a pressure gauge so you always know you have pressure. CO2 extinguishes are large and heavy by comparison; they don't have pressure guages, and the tank is supposed to be hydro tested every 5 years or so. Both types can used it as many times as you like til the charge is gone.
Halon types can produce nasty byproducts in the presence of flame, but so does burning fibreglass fuselages.. In either case, I'd rather not have a fire at all and never have to use it....

I use (well, carry) a 5 lb. Halotron bottle. It weighs les than half that of a 5 lb. bottle of CO2 and has a guage so i know it's got preasure. But the biggest advantage is it will not cold shock the turbine, and will not condensate the electronics.

A short blast of CO2 puts the fire out, and doesn't "cold shock" anything. Not enough temperature decline inside the turbine to notice. Just more urban legends....
"Condensate the electronics"? What does that mean?
"The pysical process by which the liquid is removed from a vapor or vapor mixture" If you see condensation forming, then the fire must have gone out.
Would you rather have a small amount of condensation, or a cremated receiver crystal?
A one or two-second blast is all it takes to engulf and smother the fire. No residuals, no condensation on anything....been there, done that.

A full five pound CO2 bottle weighs five pounds more than an empty one.....it's pretty easy to detect the presence, or lack of the agent just by hoisting it. That's one reason to explain the lack of a pressure gauge. If you have CO2 in the bottle, you have "built in" pressure. A Halon or Halatron bottle, unless I'm totally off base, requires the presence of a propellant, just like a rattle can does to dispense the agent. That's why the have a pressure gauge. A leaking Halon bottle leaks the propellant and the Halon....so much for the environment. We will all drown when the polar ice caps melt. Putting out your fire will drown all of us.

The now worthless Halon or Halatron bottle, as worthless as it's empty CO2 brethren, costs lots more to recharge....a five pound CO2 bottle can be recharged for a ten-spot. Earlier, I mentioned the $400.00 receipt for the 13 Lb. Halon bottle. Halon bottles require pressure checking and cleaning prior to refilling and charging, so there ain't no free lunch with that container, either. You do the math, and make up your own mind.
Go to a jet meet, and you will probably see more CO2 than any other type.

CO2 fire extinguishers have never been blamed by the greenies for global warming either.

I spent $125.00 on a 3# Halotron bottle. Had to use it once and when I attempted to have it refilled was told thay were no longer supporting this service. Expensive mistake! In addition the paint job on my aircraft suffered where any of the material came in contact with the surface. I had to wet sand with polishing compound and buff out. Bought 5# CO2 for $50. It's bulkier but no problem so far and refill for ten spot. Doug
