I have the opportunity to get a Byron F-86 kit, with a NIB OPS 80 and Fan unit. Not sure of the ages. Kit partially started. Fibergalss fuse, foamcore wings.
My questions:
Is this a good starter jet?
How's that engine going to be for it? (Not sure of what Fan Unit)
Would it be okay without retracts?
Grass takeoff? How much runway?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

The fan unit is undoubtably a Byron, as That is the only fan unit that will fit with out a bunch of Mods.
The OPS .80 will fly it but an OS.91 would be better.
Fixed gear will work also, especially if it is your first jet AND a grass runway.

I flew a Byron's F-86 for about 8 years,it would never die, just one of them planes.I powered it with a OS 77 and had Rhom air retracts.I would go with the retracts and install the aileron servos in the wing, instead of rod system. With the gear up,it really cleans up the plane.Fly's just like a sport/pattern ship.

I've had three of them! I don't remember if fixed gear was an option on that one. You could do it yourself, if you wanted.
Definitely do the servo change on the ailerons!
And get a 91. You'll be happier, I think.
Grass is not a problem, 200' will get it off, but that depends on how heavy you build, of course. My last one came in at 9.5 pounds, while I did not fly that one off of grass, it got off the pavement in maybe 100', with a 77, not a 91. Check my gallery for pics, and do a search, I think I posted some stuff about it.

Like everybody says. the darn thing just keeps going. I would go with some basci retracts and no doors. Flaps are a tossup. They may help with the grass runway. Think light! All the stuff you need or want is floating around on the internet. I'm building an F-86D with a RAM 500 in it. Yes, I'm a little crazy.

Tower Hobbies now has the OS .91 DF. they even carry the larger head designed to be used with the Byron fan. Make sure you order the larger head if you get the OS .91 with the Byron Fan Setup. We have the Byron Fans in stock ready to ship. They are 95.00 plus shipping,
