Default Drag Chutes

Well guys I have been trying to come up with a drag chute for the BVM F-4. matt Carroll and Paul Bagaman came up with the info originally. This was the info used in the design of Joe Grice's chute according to it.

The good part is I have one complete chute in my hands and all that is left is to rig it and perfect a coouple small things. I am hoping to have this worked out by the end of this weekend. The other good news is that I have found a seamstres who is willing to do the work. So it will just be a short time before I can bring these things to life for those of you who are interested. They are rather labor intensive, but the results speak for themselves I believe.

I won't let any go until I get some basic testing done on inflation and such. This shouldn't take long.

One other note guys, have patience. When I have this project complete I will post it here and will let you know cost and delivery lead time. This will take a little time, so just hang in there with me please.

Default Come on John...

I think Walmart is having a sale on shower caps! People can get those whenever they want!

Seriously that looks pretty cool! Not too many people have those. Put two on your BobCat.

I can't wait for summer. It's too cold here! Maybe ths year ill let you fly my plane....the one designed to lift weight.

Thanks again
Dustin

John,

Good to hear it. Let us know how the testing goes. BTW I hope it has a bigger spill hole that the original BVM chute. The original chute will pick the rear wheels of the F-4 up off the ground!

Hey Guy's
What John did not mention which I found very interesting is the material that the chute is made of. It is a silk that when snagged will not run, awesome.

Default Chutes----Hey John

Hey John:
Someone came up with the idea of doing the chute in white so we can dye them to our color needs.

Well guys the basic testing is complete. Chute inflates well at 20 mph all the way to 45 mph. I have the main leader breaking away at 55 mph. I will continue this testing to ensure it occurrs every time. Won't sell any untill I am positive this will work every time.

As for coming in white, that is no problem. The problem lies in that you cannot dye this material according to the fabric store ladies. They say it will come out blotchy due to the high polyester/silk content.

The color of the yellow I have is too dark for the standard chute color. I have Bill Brundle checking things out in San Diego for a more corerct color. If I have to I will make a trip to the garment district in LA to see what we can come up with there.

The chutes are sewn together with a Surger machine to give the best wear capability in the seam department. Both the edges of the spill hole and the base of the chute canopy are hemed over for a nice finish and less chance of snagging.

Still refining the tape sets between each gore to get the most correct/nice looking opening on the canopy during inflation.

The current colors that I can do are all white, all yellow (as pictured) red, white, and blue (thunderbird type and I think the Navy squadron "The Sundowners used a multi colored chute for show work), and blue and yellow (blue angle type), and red and white (not ever used that I know of but it looks cool). The multiple colored chutes will run more money than the single colored chutes.

Current pricing will be listed if the moderators give me permission to (I will wait for their response). Other than that you can email me off line for pricing. Guys I will say they aren't going to be too cheap as they are labor intensive to make. They will come fully rigger and ready for use in your model.

Also I am headed off to the post office to get the wieght of the chute for info purposes. My guess right now is the entire chute is coming in at under 2 ounces.

Hi John,

Here's my read on it..... if you are saying "Hey guys, I finally found someone to make these for us, I can get them made for $xxx - lemme know if you are interested", then as I see it that isn't commerical, and can be posted here (I'll double check with RCAdmin if you like).

However, if you are saying that you are having them made and then you are selling them at some profit (rather than telling people that they can join in with your order at your cost) then that crosses the line to "commercial" in which case you should make the announcement of the availability, price etc in the Product Announcement forum.

D'ya see where I'm coming from ?

Regards,
Gordon

That's really cool, John.

What's the chance of a "ring-slot" version???
Probably 4 times the price?!??

OK guys, the prices are listed in the Product Anouncement forum (thanks Gordon).

http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...hreadid=474960

These things should be ready to go in about 2 weeks is my guess. I will get a pic up in time showing everything you get for your money. Just need to finalize a few things.

As for Johnny, you might be getting close to the cost of a split ring chute, maybe. These chutes alone are not extremely difficult, but they are not easy to bring to life. I know people had a very hard time locating the spring necessary as well as a suitable tube for the chute housing in the aircraft. That will all be included with the chute.

Currently the one available is for the BVM F-4. I still have to work out patterns and break away test for the BVM F-100 as well as the JMP F-4 and Centruy Jet F-4.

John,

What will the prices be without the tube and spring?

We had a chute on a B-58 , For safety we hooked the chute to a servo that was "y" off the throttle so it would hold at 1/4 throttle or less . If it happen to deploy in flight you could give it throttle and it would release. It work very well on landing and on taxing you could bump the throttle and release the chute.

I can help you out there Ian. Geronimo's chute is a 16 panel chute which is classed as a sport chute. The 20 panel chute is the same diameter but has more panels for a more scale look. The 24 panel chute grows to a diameter approximately 1.75" larger.

The 16 panel sport and 20 panel scale chute are close to 16" in diameter when inflated.

The 24 panel chute is close to an 18" diameter when inflated.

Here Is The Way I Install the Chute on the Euro,(Iam using Tam's Bifurcated pipe) and the chute Install Kit phenolic tube, the bottom door is made from polyply ,and there is an 'eye hook on the scale deploying point of the fuse, rigth below the rudder, and that's it, Works Every Time!

Hi thanks for the photo

so it deploys out of the underside. I thought on the full size it came out under the fin where you have the attachment point.

Did you try at the fin position and it would not fit or work from there ?

Thanks Ian

Interesting... More details here:

Not exactly scale for most aircraft, but they should be good for sport models...
