Well I just could not resist. It was -1 and very nice outside. I flew my Byro blaster for the first time today and off snow to boot. Man does this plane ever have a short take off. It takes off in 20 feet max from fresh powder. This plane is rock solid in the air and a real joy to fly. This is the perfect fly anytime anywhere kind of plane. I am not sure on it's speed I was flying it today at 60% throttle with ski's which are acting like breaks in the air.
This is the first ever ducted fan to fly from snow at our club and probably many clubs for that matter
Here are a few pics.

Way to go!!! It's been plenty cold here but not enough snow on the ground to take you up on your ROS (rise off snow) challenge. Glad you had a successful 1st flight with that ByroBlaster Enforcer. I'm sure there will be many more to follow.
That Weston pipe looks like the hot tip - I may have to convert mine to Weston ...

Well to tell you the truth I was not really planning on flying it that day except run up the engine and taxing it around but when I throttled up the plane was moving very well and then it hit a snow drift which made the plane jump into the air and now it was flying and it was flying dead on so I hesitated for a few seconds and decided to keep on going and start doing some fly by's.
The weston pipe is a real dream of a pipe. It takes 2 minutes to install and your done no fuss or anything. On the first start I had to adjust the needle a little and it came on the pipe perfect and ran good from their. The engine transitions from idle to full bore without hesitation. This pipe being so small is very easy to tuck away into the top of the fuse.
It gets my thumbs up, not that means anything but !
Enjoy!

Using a heavy duty starter and a large utility battery. I tried to crank it over using my field battery and no go it was turning it at 2 revolutions per minute
but then my friend Randy had this huge utility battery and now it was turning over plenty fast to get it started.
Enjoy!

That's hardcore! Awesome! Been so long since I've flown in snow that I can barely remember what it's like not having any feeling in your thumbs, especially after reaching down to tweak a needle valve.

Got gotta love having those colds thumbs on the sticks and needing to land or else your thumbs will no longer function
2 years ago at our winter fun fly the temp was -20 and I can tell you that the longest flight I had was maybe 2 minutes total before my thumbs were about to fall off and that's even with cutoff gloves. The final approach was very rocky since my thumbs were so cold I just could not control them properly or it might have been the shivering of my body

Great looking Byro Blaster! And off of snow , yet!
I have never seen a tuned pipe that small. Are you using the OS .91? If so, is there much differance in the noise level over that of a full length pipe? I like the idea of the small pipe if there is no differance in performance or sound levels!
You can see my Enforcer at http://members.cox.net/jluptonjets/r...techniques.htm .
How cold did you say it was? Phew!

Joe, I forgot about your COOL consstruction pix - more than I have as I'm so lazy
- I need to add a link to your stuff from my page. Let's not forget to give lotsa credit to Dennis Strege and Ivan Shomer, eh?
Mike.

Dash7ATP,
The sound level is not any different then before. I have run both the long and short pipe on this OS.91 VRDF and the sound is the same and the top end performance seems to be the same. I have not tached it so this is just a guess. But you have to love how small and manageable this pipe is.
The only thing that I have found with this pipe is that the exhaust outlets need to be 1-2 degrees turned in. If not some of the exhaust is going against the outer ring of the pod versus through the fan like the long pipe does. Aside from that this pipe is awesome no fuss with it once installed.
Enjoy!

Sparkplug,
Where can I get more information on this pipe? Who makes it and where can it be bought? Do you need an adapter? How much does it cost?
Thanks,
Joe

Joe, the Weston (short) pipe seems to have a cult following - sort of like the Hurricane fans ...
I think I'm gonna get one just to see what all the hoopla's about. Question for anybody who runs one: Do you have to use pipe pressure?
Mike

Your nuts! I got sick of wet sanding my Bobcat today, so I went snowmobiling. Even with all the gear on I decided I was happier sanding in a nice warm shop. I'll gladly trade my snowmobile for a jet.
Think Spring!

Do your skis retract up and rest against the belly of the plane or are they fixed?
If they're fixed, I'm sure there's a way to tuck them up so they would lay flat against the belly 'eh? There's quite a speed gain with the gear up and I would say at 20km or maybe more!
My buddy saw this thread and he was talking about putting skis on his "Moooover" that I built last winter. We just might have to do it!

Jetset,
My current enforcer does not have retracts. I wanted a flyer that will fly anytime anywhere without any fuss which it does. Basically fill her up and go was supposed to be the motto with this plane when I built her.
For something radical to do in winter is to fly this plane without any landing gear which it could since it has alot of thrust. A belly take off and landing now that would be something to try hum!!!! Ideas Ideas !!!!! Hey a bungy launch would be good as well
Now that I have it flying I am looking very hard at putting retracts in it. The mains would be easy to retrofit but the nose is where things get a little touchier. But it would look alot cleaner and more jet like.
I am planning on getting a TGA Interceptor with all the bells and whittles including gear doors to get the best top speed I can so I am not sure about playing with the enforcer. Decisions Decisions !!!!!
mmrmike,
I am using the pipe pressure that comes already installed with the pipe and it seems to work very nicely. As for a cult well you really got to love that small package with plenty of performance to go around.
Dash7ATP,
The pipe is a weston pipe that I purchased from Top Gun. It requires nothing different from a header perspective then the normal long pipe needs. If you already have the long pipe you just take it off and install this one and go fly. Just to simple. The cost was $159US.
enjoy!
