BTW.....BVM tank fittings in the picture are kind of expensive......around $20 each....but they are nice.

Derrick
I was just reading through this thread and saw the great custom tanks that were developed, this would be a good alternative for the fittings, you can then use the standard stoppers

Yes, one can use any type of fitting. By the time one gets the alternate fitting, brass tube and stopper you are close to the price of the BVM type fitting.

I just think the BVM type fittings are more dependable for a couple of bucks more.

Whats a couple more bucks if you are planning on putting a $2000 plus turbine in a $200 airframe...[8D]

Guys just to show another install and how well the Falcon is for an airframe. Here is a Golden West Turbine in my Falcon 120. I have a 50oz Dubro tank with a 2oz UAT. With that fuel load I have my timer set at 4min from takeoff role. The Golden West being one of the first production turbines is both big, heavy not to mention thirsty for only putting out 8lbs at max thrust. The engine flies the Falcon fine here at sea level in Calif. I can pull it threw a loop but it by no means has much more vertical than that. On the flip side not many people can say they are out there flying a turbine aircraft that all up costs less than $1800 to put in the air. I know one other gentlemen that has a Golden West and was thinking of getting a Falcon for the same setup. We can start up a new class nostalgia turbine.

Launch pad, that is a great achievement, I would love to see some video of your engine pushing this plane along. Maybe you could get together with your friend and how about fitting two Golden Wests on there, that would be brilliant. I believe the engine is a production version of the Schekling FD3, correct me if i am wrong and the development work that went on those days was nothing short of ammazing. I to was trying to make an engine way way back, but i went to small, I mean really small, so my experimnets were failed before they began. I started building larger and then had some success, then the JPX came along and manged to get to see one running. I was gutted as it was just brilliant. I then turned my attentions to designing an axial flow compressor engine, again i went to small and I was beaten again, despite having variable inlet guide vanes. After many years I went back to centrifugal impellas and ended up buying a compressor instead of making one and my engine was then semi reliable and had some power. After a couple of years tweeking I had a good engine, which I use today. With the reliabilty of these engines today, we all tend to forget the work that originally cracked the codes of micro turbines and books like Kurts, really made flying a reality. The FD3 was an awesome engine with home made plywood impella, just brilliant.
couple of pics of some of early designs, I cant tell you how many hours went into machining the impeller on a home made lathe.

Lots of great info here thanks for all the write ups.

I am toying with the idea of trying one of these for something different as I fly giant scale areo and having been toying with selling one of my 40%'s and building one of these, I have a line on a used airframe. I see that the Rabbit looks like the ultimate, do you guys have any thoughts one the Kingtech as it looks interesting and the price point looks good?

Thanks
Mat

Mat,

I run a Rabbit on mine. I do not dial it down just use throttle management. Too much fun booting full throttle and watching it spec out! TO is nice and short also.

I have not seen the kingtech. Here it's a good turbine but would like to see in another year how all goes well.

As for the Rabbit, I had two super bees which were awesome turbines. In fact, I did not want to sale one. However in the end, you are limited with the number of airframes that it will fly. The rabbit is just a hare (lol) bigger then the super bee and in my opinion a much better turbine. Fuel consumption in not much more then bee, thrust is 19lbs, and weight is about 1/4 heavier (this is a guess on weight as I am going by mfg. listing.

Support for Jet Central turbines is awesome. I just got the Rabbit in Monday. Installed turbine and had starter go out (not a common problem). Today I had a new starter on my door step. Did not cost me a penny. Eric is a great guy to deal with as well.

As for the Falcon, I had one with a super bee on it. Flew great. Coming out of a shallow dive it hit 170. Straight and level it would hit around 155 or so. With the rabbit, I would think straight line speed would be around 165 and shallow dives close to 190.

Thanks for the replies.

I am very new to the turbine realm so I may have a few questions here and there. Any thoughts on the Behotec 66 for this airframe, reliability, service, as there may a low hour one in my area ?

Thanks

Talk to Peter at Altecare www.altecare.com he is a wealth of knowledge with these turbines and sells them... Located in Mississauga, Ontario..

I used to have a Falcon with a P70, if you dont do all the mods and strenghten the certain areas fuse, booms, wings, etc you will have issues with a weak airframe.

I have a behotec 66 and it runs great....

Later,
C

Does anyone know if the horizon flightline range of retracts will fit the falcon? I dont have a lot of time to modify the retract mounts so want a set i can just drop in air up spring down with steerable noseleg. Anyone got any recommendations for ease of fitment?

both look like air up/down...
look at the retract units. with out air the trunions would be in the down position.
look at the retract valves too. 2nd group has a robart.

Mad freestyler (Huw), I used the economy spring air set from Zedjets in the UK. They are from Jet legend. I managed to pick up a very cheap pair of trailing link legs and these worked perfectly from a grass strip and an old concrete runway. The retracts are only about £80 are they done the job very well on my old falcon and never let me down. I kept it very cheap and chearful and with a wren 54 mk3 (14ibs thrust) it flew awesome. If you choose to listen to my experience its up to you but it pays if you keep it as simple and cheap as possible to get the maximum enjoyment out of the jet. I also used a volvic 1.75 Ltr water bottle for a tank and this gave me approx 8 minutes of fast or slow flying. I have ended up selling my jet complete with its recently wren fully serviced turbine and all my fuel and starting gear to take up paragliding/motoring. I let it go for £1250.

Thanks for the advice. I did buy a set from Zed but they were inverted mount, aint got the time to mod the mounts. Was that the same as the ones you purchased? If not wouldn't mind the part number if you have it kicking around?

Does anyone know if any of the spring air range are plug and play for this model? I had a look on their site but there are no dimensions. Looks like the 703's will take the weight.

Madfreestyler, I had the ones that you had from Zedjets. It was only the nose unit that has the mounting unit the reverse to the mains. I just glued a flat ply plate between the two front formers in the nose bay at the correct depth and screwed the unit to that. Simple.

That way if you have a heavy landing the ply plate just brakes free without taking anything else with it.

I have been looking at your gear setup, I see that you said the gear was in a T-28, what T-28 did you have, I was thinking about using a set of Robart gear that was going in the Top Flight T-34, they look the same.
Thanks for the input and I'm sure alot of guys will get help from your pictures.

Whitcombe,
Can you remember which trailing link set you used on your Falcon - were they a straight fit into the Zedjet retracts?

His user name is noray. If you search this thread for "replacement canopy" or "noray" you should be able to find his contact information. Or you could just PM him.

There are also a couple for sale in the Jets Classified section, but noray's are much better.
