Default Question for F-18 drivers.

Has anyone ever set up their plane with flaperons as well as flaps? If so what were the results? How did you like it or not?
Thanks, Billy

Philo,

I guess it just depends on how you like the jet to "feel". On my F-15 (SM) I have it conventional (flaps, ailerons, elevators) but the 5 other F-15s at my field are/were all tailerons and they all told me I should fly the -15 that way.

I switched it over to that configuration and HATED it. I then returned it back to conventional and over 100 flights later it's still going strong.

On my F-18F (SM also) I am flying it conventional and am very happy with it. I was actually surprised at how sensitive and responsive the ailerons are and had to dial them down quite a bit after the first few flights.

Will tailerons work on the F-18? Sure will. Will it look cool when you do a control check on the ground? Oh yea...sure will. Do you really need to do it to make the jet fly better? Not at all. All that being said, I think Rav set his Hornet up with tailerons so he should be a good guy to talk to about the set up, and I have not flown a Yellow -18 so maybe it flies different and they would work better that way.

When you guys set up the tailerons, do you also use the ailerons (as ailerons), and flaps??

In a word...yes. The combo is about 10% ailerons mixed in with the tailerons and use the flaps like normal.

Well...that's how they do it down here anyway. Some guys just lock out the ailerons on smaller, lighter jets so I guess you could do it either way.

You say tailerons and I say flaperons. Are we talking about the same thing. Just to clarify, I have a f15 with tailerons. It has no ailerons or flaps. But on the yellow f18 I have all three. My question is has anyone set the plane up with the ailerons down as well as the flaps, keeping the elevators as elevators only. It's kind of like crow but instead of the alerions going up they deflect down too.

OH! Oops...I misread what you said. It probably will not fly very good that way because you wont have much roll control when the ailerons are drooped. If you were to do it that way, you would have to have the elevators set up as tailerons I would think.

Your right! I have talked to Tam and he reminded me that the real one is fly by wire. Anyways, I don't think I'll try it just for the look especially if its gonna make it fly like *h*t.
