Please advise -Skymaster 1/8 F-16 flaperons! - Why can't we use them!
Hi everyone,
Just raising a question. I've almost finished building a Skymaster 1/8 F-16. Im due to maiden it tommorw arfternoon at our loval flying field however , during the radio setup stages i did notice in the manual if gives you a option of using tailerons and flaps... or the conventional ailerons and elevator.
It stats in the manual on the last page in bold letters NO FLAPERONS
I have sent an email to anton aswell,
My radio set up is that in flight mode 0 ( cruise) everything functions normally. Ailerons and elvators. In flight mode 1 (t/o & approach) the ailerons now become flaperons by dropping 2mm
The real difference is in flight mode 3 ( Land). the ailerons drop to the down postion about 10mm and the Travel adjust is back to 20% so i have very little but still aileron movement while the flaps are full down and then the elevator becomes a taileron incoperating the loss of the full movement of the airlerons..
Would this work??
Has anyone ever used flaperons??
I have been using flaperons on all my other aircraft eg patternships, sunday flyers and STOL a/c i have designed. Never really a problem so very confused.
Thanks all
Michael

Hello:
I had mine set up exactly as you did with the flaps down and the tailerons working, after about 50 flights. I would recommend not using the flaps on the test flight because while the model flys nicely with the flaps, it was difficult to get the nose up high enough during the flare to land on the mains and not the nose gear, which makes for an ugly landing.

In my opinion there is no need for flaps on the small F-16 it can fly very slow without them. In the one I had I used them as ailerons and they worked great. Also for takeoff no flaps needed neither. The jet will take off smooth and short if needed.

I didn't need flaps on my JL F-16 it does set nose slightly high and it also takes quite a bit of runway to rotate.
I had ailerons, elevator and rudder only. It takes more throw on the elevator and almost no throw on the ailerons.
Great flyer. Not extreamly fast, with P-70. but it gets around. I had it dialed down to 118000 max rpm. Next spring we will turn up the wick.
Mr Tom Cook Of JMP said their is NO need for flaps. in his openion.
I wonder if their is a Flap Blanking effect of the Tailerons at a high angle of attack. Have to ask Tam???

For landing.............absolutley no need for flaps. Just addas a whole lot more drag. The F-16 itself is pretty draggy with the gear extended. Just keep the AOA where it should be and it will land as slow as you can manage your throttle.
If it is for takeoff......I don't think flaps will help you that much anyway.

If you installed about 14 pounds of turbine in the tail, you should feel it is light and agile.I and my friend use only elevon for control, alieron was even left -out!My friend installed the smoke oil and got extra weight about 2 kg,no problem when take-off and landing!
