Hi Guys
Started cutting out the formers and its looking good. When the holes are drilled in the formers,the inside pieces will be cut after that. I do all the outer edge cuts and then remove the inner sections,once the holes have been drilled.

Hi There
The fuselage formers are almost complete,apart from the holes etc,which must be drilled in them.I have a question,regarding the engine mounting rail position in the F11 former.The way I understand it,is that the slot must be lowered,so that there is more down thrust on the engine?The ARF version,also explained what must be done.Is this applicable to the scratch-built version as well?

Hi Guys
The 1st photo shows the fuselage side joint.The blade in my scroll saw broke today,so it had to be cut out by hand.The 2nd photo shows the F11 former and the question about lowering the slot for the mounting rail.Will get some new blades tomorrow for the scroll saw.

Hello KJ! I am also building the Turinator but from a laser cut kit. I am impressed by your effort to saw everything from scratch but thats a little bit to time consuming for my part. I am half way through the body right now.

Thankyou for your reply. Yes,it is a very time consuming task,but enjoyable at the same time. I have got some advice for you - check if your engine will have the correct thrust angle? You cab view the Shulman Turbinator thread,as its all explained there. I studied the drawings and the thrust line is very shallow,which means that you need more down thrust. I`ve taken note of this and will change the slots in the F11 former. This will alow the engine`s exhaust to point more downwards.
This could save you the trouble of doing it at a later stage.

Are you sure the plan thrust angle is wrong. I've read a few threads on peoples build, and never heard anyone mention that the plan was wrong? I know there first batch of Shulman kits were incorrect, have you found out what the thrust angle should be?

The way that I understand it,is that the Shulman Turbinator is based on the Ziroli drawings. Now if it is based on the Ziroli drawings,then why did they change the thrust angel to more down thrust? I agree that there was nothing mentioned about this on the Turbinator`s build thread. So I asked this question on this thread and had no response to it. Maybe the wing and tail incidence is different on the Shulman Turbinator. The main reason for changing the thrust angle,was to keep the "trimmed" settings,through the different flying speeds.i.e. so that the model won`t climb at a full throttle speed.

The Ziroli Turbinator plans were designed with a 13lb Wren 54 or P60 size turbine. When producing the ARF version, Shulman conducted extensive year+ flights and testing prior to releasing the ARF.
During that time his tests were conducted with K80, Rabbit, and P80 size turbines which have turned out to be perfectly sized for the Turbinators. For a neutral feel at all speeds and power settings use the increased down thrust as Shulman recommends on the plans built or ARF. Don't over think it and second guess it. Just do it and reap the rewards.

So the K80 size turbine will cause it to pitch up,when at full throttle. This is due to the increased power of the turbine. I`ll stick to the recommended new thrust angel.

No,the Shulman kits were not manufactured wrong at all. The power output of the K80`s and P80`s etc,is more than what the original Ziroli Turbinator was flown with,when it was tested. The Shulman Turbinator went through test flights and it was found that it would fly better with more down thrust on the engine. Take a look at the Shulman Turbinator thread and you will find a pdf file,which shows a photo of the new thrust angel. If I`m not mistaken,you must raise the slot to a higher position in the number F-10 former? Take a look at it,as the photo explains it very well. The original plan design was not wrong either. They just has a turbine with less thrust in it.
When I return from a work related task,I`ll post a photo of the former,that has to be modified,regarding the new thrust angel.

I built one of the first Turbinators other than Nicks personal one from the kit Ziroli models sells. I used a P-120 dialed down to 20 lbs in it which it still has installed until my big one is finished ( see the 125% enlarged Turbinator thread) I mixed in a few degrees of down elevator at full power to stop it from climbing. I would add some additional down thrust if you are using anything more than 14 lbs of thrust.

I used the stock thrust line and it flies perfect. No trim change needed for speed changes. Keep in mind that I moved the wing up into the fuse 1/2" to help it look more like a TS-11 Iskra. This would have changed the effective thrust line slightly. I have a 19lb thrust Jet Central Rabbit in mine. About 150 flights on it, and it still flies great. Here's a photo during the build showing the belly pan I had to make when I moved the wing up. Air to the turbine flows under the wing as well as on top.

Its been a while since I had made an update on this project. My Mother has been in Hospital and is back at home now. I`ve cut all of the wood parts required for the fuselage and just completed the task of joining the fuselage sides in its length. A photo shows the fuselage sides,placed under a sheet of glass,with lead blocks on top of it. Just waiting for the glue to dry. Now I have to build the crutch assembly.
