Default pluse jet question

Our club has a new member that is set on flying a plane(r/c) using a pluse jet. My understanding is that A.M.A says no to this. I reread the rules that were sent with my last waiver card, and saw no mention of this.
I want to be sure I'm not hendering someone, but at the same time want to make sure I'm not part of something that will endanger our club charter.
Thanks for the input.

Kevin,
Check AMA Regs 510-Q and 510-R. They pretty cover the pulse jet situation.

Just starting one of those will put your club in trouble with your neigbors.
It may cause hearing damage to all there.

Don't do it the noise can be heard for miles and tail pipe gets white hot, big fire hazard if you do get the thing started.

Here are links to the regs that John sited. If the declaration and rules are followed it no longer becomes an AMA issue.
If the club has issue the club needs to adress it internally.

Hope this helps. They are pretty loud but cool er neat

Thanks guys!
I read the regs, and was suprised how loose they were. I thought there was a throttle requirement.

John:
Good to here from you!

Again thanks

Kevin,

Couldn't you just ask about the pulse jet regs? The names on this thread are names I do not even recognize as "regulars" on the jet threads. Just an observation.

Kevin's regular, um - around the jet community.

Wait, that didn't come out right, wait did it again.

Oh carp!

Kevin's "ok", even if he eats a bunch of fiber... He's just trying to find out what the deal is.

Pulse jets are handled completely differently from turbines, since they've been around longer. They are freakin' dangerous, though!

Chuck. you hanging around Barry again????
Raf, we may not be regulars in your world.....But most of the guys that responded to my question about the pluse jets, I have meet at jet meets (in our world), flew with them and shaken their hand, that makes them regular to me. You on the other hand I have not had the pleasure of meeting, or have flown with, or shaken your hand, look foward to doing that though.
Again thanks to all that replied!

Ahhhh...feel the love... cough, choke!

Yeah, hanging around Barry while he's building is pretty inspiring, though at the same time strangely depressing. Learned last night that Home boy can perfectly space rivets - fast and - free handed! Made them look like a machine did it. That kind of build talent is just sick.

Hope things find you well in La.

Give Bruce Tharpe of BTE a call he has experience flying these things. PH 1-800-557-4470. After seeing pluls jet flying on control line my advice is don't try it with RC, just too dangereous at a club field.

Kevin, I have seen & HEARD these jets fly in the UK, believe me they have a serious noise problem, if your club has any sort of noise regulations these things will blow them out of the water, or sky. It will deafen you at close range, even when wearing ear defenders, & at 1500ft is said to have an 8mile sound footprint. There is no throttle & they run flat out until they run out of gasoline. On the other hand, they are awesome to watch, & are seriously fast. YeeeHaaaaa. Cheers. Ray

There was a guy at our field that ran one but never put it in a plane, that is where I got the thought that there was a need for a throttle. Yes they are loud, and to see metal get hot enough to see through is a sight to see.
We are getting dates for this years jet meet in Shreveport, no turnip truck rides this year but, we might have fishing poles to hand out.

I have many flights with a pulse jet powered R/C plane. GREAT FUN!!! With some common sense and well thought out safety precautions it is no more dangerous than any other high-performance R/C aircraft.

Yes it is loud. But making prior arrangements and setting a time to fly has always had positive results for me.

Have a look at Bruce Tharpe's web site. He has a short video of his twin Pulse Jet "Double Whammy" flying.

Darryl:
Is there a card, or notation from the A.M.A confrming that the paperwork required has be completed, similer to the one for turbines?
Again my intenet is to make sure I'm doing it right without getting in the way.

I do know what Bruce has done but I think little if anything. If he showes up with pulse jets he will fly.

One suggestion...Have a good fuel shut-off that can be operated quickly from the tx or automatically via fail-safe. Although you've probably already thought of that, it doesn't hurt to mention it.

My pulse jet powered plane was a .25 size Robbe F-15 kit which was strengthened in a few places and weighed 5 1/2 pounds with full fuel. The Dynajet was mounted underneath. It had fixed landing gear. The speed was in the 150 mph range based on my pylon experience. I have a DVD of one of the flights. I've never posted a video before but I'll try to figure out how soon.

Again...GREAT FUN!

Hey. Here is an idea.
Put that thing on a test stand and run it at night.Nobody will want it flying an R/C plane.

I believe it will melt without cooling air flowing over the main body tube. All night will end up being 2 minutes!!!
