Default Todd's Bobcat elevator servo covers

G'day all,

As many of you know there has been a lengthy debate about replacing the 3301's in the Bobcat elevator with something larger, which would require some kind of fairing since the servo would protude below the bottom surface of the stab.

Todd (lov2flyrc) posted here about the fact that he was willing to help out by molding elevator servo covers and making them available at whatever it cost him to produce.

At that point we were mildly concerned about the fact that we were allowing that thread to continue, whereas we closed down other threads in which people were offering to sell parts that they manufacture. However, the thread was left in place mainly because of the offer to sell the parts at what they cost - we hoped that we could address some of your recent concerns about how strict we are on commercial posts, by trying to differentiate between threads where someone was out to make a profit vs threads where someone is just offering goods at cost in order to help fellow RCU members.

However, after some input from members, and consideration by a bunch of the mod's, it has become quite clear that the above line would be impossible to draw fairly and consistently in each case in future - and so I'm afraid we've had to reconsider our little experiment.

Consequently, Todd's thread has been moved to the Product Announcement forum: http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...hreadid=758931

Normally we would not make a post here indicating that an announcement has been moved - but in this case I'm doing so because otherwise I know it's only a matter of time before someone posta a "Where did that thread go" query. Everyone who posted an "I want some" reply in the thread still has their post in the moved thread, so you need not worry about that. Anyone else who wants to join in will have to do so by PM or email though, since you can't reply to that thread now that it has been moved.

Thanks for listening, and sorry that we couldn't find a better way to make this work.

Default If?

If your intentions were to perform an experiement to see if a "not for profit" commercial post would be acceptable by the RCU users, it may have been a good idea to be up front about the experiment. RCU has been very clear about the rules of commercial posts and until informed of changes we will abide by these rules.(RCU has given us no other option).

If this was an experiment, it would have been in your best interest not to use a former moderator for this test. It appears that RCU has some favoritism going on here. The amount of attention and care that was taken on this subjet may very well have not happened if another individual was involved.

This is in no way intended to suggest Todd did anything that anyone else would have done. He is a great advocate of this hobby and this forum. I did a similar thing in the past with my test stands. I made a few to cover my cost of making them(including my own) and was shut down. I was not a large manufacturer, just covering my costs and trying to support my hobby. I just feel that RCU bends the rules to suit their needs.

If you plan on changing the rules, please let us know. Many of us would listen with open ears.

Default BOB Cat Servos

Hi Guys I have been following this post for some time and I decided to go to the full size servos for my new Bob Cat. I used Hitec digital 5925's Torque is 102.7 at 4.8 volts and at 6vt. it goes up to 127.7. As you can see by the photo by moving the servo forward and using a two pice hard wood back brace it will allow the servo covers to fit.The forward part of the servo interlocks with the webbing and will not move in any direction. And by using a two piece hardwood block the servo can be removed fairly easy. Take it for it is worth.or my 2 cents no charge.
Thanks and good luck. Paul Hopkins JPOFL

Paul,

This is interesting...
I tried to mount an 8411 the same way but found it would not fit that far forward without having to grind the spar at the center of the elevator. Although it probably would not affect the strength of the elevator enough to matter I was not willing to chance it. I am curious how you were able to get the hitec to fit, did you have to grind away any of the structure? You dont have any concerns that the front of the servo is not mounted (I realize it is wedged between the spars and the ply webbing), the servo does not want to shift side to side??
Thanks!
See ya at beat the heat

Hi Todd. Yes I did cut the vertical webbing to a slot but the webbing is fairly soft wood. Loss of strength was minimal. To the extra torque that I got with the Hitec servo. However I did (not) cut the structural part of the spar. Just cut a vertical slot in the webbing. By using the two hard wood blocks laid on there side and tapered the wood so the cover would fit. The servo can not move in any direction. So I feel that it will work just fine. But the test will come in flight. If I thought it would fail I would never risk the airframe or Safety. Since I live in the same town as BV and see him often I am sure he will check it out. I want to make it clear that this is what I did to overcome the Torque issue, and I am just offering my two cents worth. I am not saying this is the best way to do this. It is just a idea and if someone else uses this they should consider all options. I may catch some flack
from BV on this because I change the design in my aircraft. I will have to take the respectability for my changes!!!!

Safety First!!! Good Luck and Good Flying !!

Thanks for the info Paul.

There must be a slight size diffrence between the 8411 and the 5925, second check on mine and I would have to grind the spar to get the 8411 to fit. Much more comfortable with mounting the servo further back in the hole allowing mounting both sides of the servo firmly. I thank you for the information though

Regards,
Todd
