RED FLAG

That series is really good, the Hornet is superb. I didnt realize they take them from the fleet when they are at about the end of their airframe life cycle and paint them blue.
I have been to a couple of Red Flags way back when. The auditorium scene at the beginning is close but it was more of an orientation and do not do this or else briefing. I remember one Red Flag I went to, F-4E's from St Louis and I believe Indiana were waxing Eagles, there wasnt enough room on the variramp for F-15 kills-it was cool.
Doug, I remember the ACMR pods they would hang on the pylons. You could go watch in real time on a big screen and see what was happening or go to a debrief for your unit and see how your pilots did. It was cool seeing how things went and who was shooting who and how.

Absolutely, although the Discovery Channel's mini-series "Blue Angel - A Year in the Life" was incredible as well.
Sweatpea01, you hit the nail right on the head. It's the horrible inaccuracies that make this such a poor representation. When I was a kid, I was around Red Flag, and the US Navy Fighter Weapons School a lot due to my father's work with Cubic Corp, and the Tactical Air Crew Training System (Although it was called the ACMR system back then) he designed for them. So when I see movies like this it just makes me cringe. The director apparently LOVED the look of flares, since every aircraft is just crapping them out continuously in nearly every scene.
Andy, I disagree with you in that I'm jaded. Why is it so hard to present things accurately?
Do the men and women who put their lives on the line daily some justice, show them the respect they deserve, and do the damn movie the right way. Of course.. that's just my own jaded opinion.

Threshold is my favorite video, spectacular inflight video of the F-4J Blue Angels. Some of the narration is cheezy but you quickly ignore the talk because the inflight video from the cockpit is so good.

It's a Hollywood presentation of the world ......[
] If It were a real presentation " Do you ever think we would go to WAR"again ! I've witnesses the horrors of war,and mans inhumanities, Never wanting to have any of our troops to go in harms way again . In this USA media world we live in, we can't even show the flag draped caskets returning from war, everything must be sugar coated. Its a recruiting advertisement .. Enjoy the Drama,Images and be happy no one was injured making this film.

Sorry for asking it, but this site don´t let me watch this in my country. Is this the movie with the big guy in the F-15 cockpit yelling "yeah!" ?
Thx in advance, as I prefer to not mask or proxy the IP identity of my connection....

Sorta. The guy that screams YES was actually the Agressor pilot in an F-16. Its tough to tell who is who as they cut back and forth rather quickly and show the same scenes multiple times to extend the fight.

Thx, I saw this movie in a tv showroom here... the flight scenes are nice and the rest, well.. you know.... the important thing as usual is the beauty of flight.

It's pretty cheesy I paid to see it in IMAX 3D at the Luxor when it was showing in Vegas. I think I got ripped off it was
just a flair show. Now it's been released for regular television and it probably sucks even worse. Just my opinion...

I agree with Dougie....kinda. Air Traffic Controllers don't talk that way. It was a lot of hype for the general public. Most of it wasn't needed. Why though is the question....this audience (RCU) is reasonably educated in cinematography (Paul, et al.) and/or military aviation (too numerous to list). I mean a C17 for red flag.....really?.
Just give us the straight poop. For the general public a little sugar is prolly good.
All said....I watched the whole effing thing. Airplane geeks FTMFW.....
YMMV

Actually RF does have C-17's. They do mock air drops and fly low-level missions. Everything depends on what countries are invited and what units are deployed who are supposed to attend.
When I was flying with the Agressors we tried to find one and shoot it down but instead we ended up with 4 F-16 kills.

You'd be surprised at all the different types of airframes that participate at RF.....and flying at the same time..

Ya, I saw it in the IMAX. Not what I was hoping for. Cool in spots but overall, it seemed to have no energy and the pilot, ya, not the best choice.

The original system was limited to 4 aircraft due for a variety of reasons. My father spent the better part of 2 years back in the early 1970's at MCAS Yuma installing/testing the 1st ACMR system. VMFAT-101 was the primary test squadron back then when they were Rhino drivers. Pretty sure Buck Garza wound up in that unit here at MCAS Miramar for awhile

It was called ACMI by the Air Force, ACMR by the Navy, and then someone finally got the bright idea to have a single name for the systems and called it TACTS. The last update I saw handled 128 aircraft and I believe has been updated to include ground units now as well. I'm sure it's an even better system now.
Oh.. and it used to have a cool little miniature golf game built into the debriefing system too for those 'down' times.

AMCI rings a bell now that you mentioned it. The video I remember was pretty much 2 dimensional and terrain looked like stick figures or Pyramids, Its probably much better now. There was a rumor or maybe urban legend that out in the range there is an area were pilots were never allowed to fly over and if they did they were sent packing as soon as they landed back a Nellis. Not sure if its still exist.

That is correct......its 4808. Its a square piece of airspace in the center of the NTTR. It is still restricted to overflight (although I have not flown RF for about 5yrs so things may have changed but I doubt it.)

When I was flying with the agressors
Hey Sweetpea01 - huge respect from me - shows you never know who you're talking to here.
I've just collaborated with Ralle of Tailormadedecals to produce a set for the blue (flanker scheme) F-15 (80-0010) 65th AGGRESSORS bossbird for 1/9.5 scale F-15 (Skymaster,Jetlegend,Fei Bao & Flyeaglejet) - it's on his website. Our blue aggressor F-15 looks fantastic & a real change from grey.

That probably makes for some interesting video, ACM going on and all of a sudden a hard left or right to avoid the area. AWACS or range controllers probably help with that however. RF is hot in more ways than one, went to RF in Augusts, the jets get so hot you can hardly touch them. Also saw the effects of hail on aircraft radooms and windscreens. An afternoon storm flashed up and caught a couple A-6's come back from the range. Did some major damage and FOD'ed an engine on one of them. It was neat to see how the Navy folks worked on the engine after they pulled it from the jet. They didnt bring along a extra engine stand so they hung it from a wing pylon[:-] worked good[8D]
