RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
Beautiful work Jonas, you are getting there my friend. I really liked the way you used paper profile as template to show how airplane will look with fuselage on top of it, great thought there!.
You were right why need CNC when you can do things by hand tools, i like the way you are cutting aluminum LG parts yourself, it's really inspiring to me. Man this Viggen is surely taking shape. So what if progress is slow but it's there and that's what is counted...

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
Hi Sam! That paper silouette was something i made before i started this insanity. I was doing some carpentery and had to wait for paint or glue or something to dry. So i started to frame up a viggen on the floor with rulers, books and whatever i could find!
I tried some really (very)big variants there. Very inspireing, at least enough to start taping large pieces of paper together an drawing this Viggen on it. Then a week or so later there was a hobbyfair in Stockholm. I brought my paperplane and terrorized all people i knew there! If youre gonna be a loony why not do it properly. After that there was no turning back!
Yesterday when i should have done other things i started to worry about weight! So i went of to the Barn where i do my dirty work and took everything to my scale. The weight of engines, radio you cant do very much about.
But i checked everything i have built so far, and tried to calculate what i havent.
My plans have been to try to keep things under 15kg, ican se now that this is just wishful thinking.
My calculations landed on more than 20kg!
So now i have started a weight management program! Im gonna try to cut away almost everything!
New target weight is 18kg! we will see what happens.

Moulded the Fanshroud some days ago. Turned out alright, very stiff even if i didnt use any carbon. The plug wasn´t to badly damaged, and can be fixed and used again. So all in all a success. Now i can start workin on the centerbody.

The wing has also progressed some. Laminated foamparts have been glued to the plywodstructure. It takes a long time, as i can only do a few things every session.
Much more fun now when i can actually start to assemble things.

Hi ! I havent been at it fo a while! And here is one reason! I have taken a break from Viggen and have been finishing my "Redmonster"
Power is OS77 and a Boss fan, as it is a prototype it is somewhat overweight at around 8kg,
Length is 192cm and wingspan 172cm. Full composite.
First flight is planned this weekend!

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
Hi folks! A happy new year to all! I have had something like a 5 month buildingbreak. I tried to do some stuff this X-mas/Newyear but back problems stopped that. Stinks that when there finally is time to build you cant do it! And now i have to work again........
Anyway my red Monster flew very well until a rubberband went thru the Fan with a deadstik landing as a result. No problem as the plane glided in nicely far a more or less perfect landing. But the fan lost all its blades and that was it.
Stupid thing to do! or rather not do ( make sure the fuse is empty of loose items that is)
Well im back to redesigning the retract system on my Viggen, Also im looking into a fiberglass Vampire as my 1/4scale foamversion flies soo well despite a 15kg weight!
So im not dead yet, just a minor coma!
Have fun and build nice planes

Hey Jonas,
Happy new year and X-mas to you also, it's been a while we haven't heard from you. I was going to send ya pm today actually if i had not seen this post from you. Good to know you still working on Viggen project once again and alos completed and flew "Redmaster" sport jet.
I have been plugging away with my C-130 and Arrow, restarted to work on Arrow for few days now, you can see it in DF Jets thread. C-130 is coming along ok but not enough time in day hrs now to work in my projects as work and other erins at home takes more priority. Health wise i'm holding ok, a week ago my back acted up again but now it's ok to say the best.
Can't wait to see you working on "Viggen" again soon, so get started on it, it's one heck of cool project!!....
Arious bud...

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
As i am away from home most of the time i have started this project so i wont go totally bonkers! The Viggen is definitivelly on hold, so instead we have Mig29! A bit simpler in construction and mainly from white foam. My phone camera is broken so i hade to use som old really crappy digital camera instead. Bad picture better than no picture, so here goes!

Fans will be Old swedish Boss, engines.... not sure yet! Probably OS77 or KB82 or maybe Rossi 82. I have a friend who also fly alot of ICDF and we have been trading engines abit like baseballcards so i dont have a fitting double at the moment. Apart from the OS91/77 combo for my Viggen!

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
AAWwww, that is a can of worms! I will try to keep it under 15kg but i really have no idea. Mostly because the covering process will be completilly new to me. And also from experience it seems that if you need to have a certain noseweight to get proper balance theweight increase is something like twice of that. Pessimistic, arent i? So, who knows?

Its a one off! sorry, if you were intrested. Im building in a very loose way, lots of improvising and hand sculpting. You may have the drawing material if you are interested but they are not very scale (i think). This is meant to be big and imposing, not for competition.

Thing arent very good at the moment! Have been (and am i suppose) battling a bit of an depression. Booring stuff!
Think the road is uphill again (Hows that for a dualmessage) Anyway i have worked some on the slob in the office! Hes really gonna be a slob, plans call for empty liquerbottles, packs of cigarettes and pornmags all over the cockpit. Also i have been messing some with the landing gears.
Well....Zombie or not there is movement.
