RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
OK! Landing gear. These things are big! Im gonna have to shave off some more material but its beginning to look as an undercarrige.
I guess im a complete sicko but i think these are fun to make!

Looking great, and those things are indeed fun to make.
A friend of mine is doing a landing gear for a very big Mig 29 and he is using car window actuators for each retract. I wonder what you are going to use on yours?

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
My Original plan was to have an "3,6v electric screwdriver" driving a screwjack and use this for all three gears. Now seeing the size of these things im thinking maybe one at each leg. I havent decided yet. I need to measure the force needed! Ihave used this tecnique on several projects and it usually works fine, the only downside is the time needed to the legs in. 8-12 seconds which is a long time in the air.

I guess that there is not many options for this size.. if this is from any help my friend used the vauxhal cavalier 4 door saloon wich was smaller and most powerful of the bunch he searched. And yes, 12 seconds is a long time but there is not a big issue at all.

Doing some work on the landinggear! I tested how much force that was needed to retract one of the mains. Not bad! Less force than i thought.
Very hopeful about that! Im doing just one of the mains until i get it right so the third leg in the back is a dummy.
I found the nosewheels in a local shop, about two dollars each (less actually) Very sturdy. I bought 10 of them!

Looks great!
So nice to see a nice project being done without the "Money is No Object" mentality going on.
If this where in another thread it would look like,
"...and here I used the Jennings Mark 5 Retracts "$6,580.00" and put Burtstine Gold Track wheels and hubs on them "1,800.00 each".

I like the expensive stuff! Would love to afford an ultrabandit or something, but no.
So i do what i can to create fun and cool things with the resources avalible.
I agre that there might be a need to balance the "consumer" side to this hobby.
But anyone can have his own fun, or not. Cool stuff is cool stuff.

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
Thanks! I had a good day at work, so i decided to treat myself with some qualitytime. I needed to spend some time with my MIG!
Nosegear mechanics look promising, needs some hefty power to retract though. So i will let the nosgear have its own system.
I put the fuselage together and let the thing stand on two of its legs.(third is a dummy)
Sometime ago i noticed tha the nose was hangin down a bit so i did some surgery. Seems i overdid it, front fuse needs to come down a bit again. No worrys, its easily done. Really inspiring to see the monster asembled (well, front and main fuse)
Let me tell you! This is gonna be massive! Love it!

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
Had an intresting day today! When i woke up all drowsy i heard heavy rain smattering on the window! (Going to work on a bicycle this was not something i wanted[&o]) So i did the only reasonable thing, i turned over and...... overslept! 3 hours.
Im self employed at the moment, so no biggie! (Looking for work)
Nice weather!
Managed to finish a job that has been troublesome with some good ideas. (doing some woodwork).
Went to my workshop and started to mess with the Nose gear retract system i had redesigned yesterday... again. Nothing worked! [:@]everything seemed completely messed up. I was pretty tired when i drew it but really...
So i started to make the plywoodstructure which will hold the steering servo.
This will follow the nosegear when retracted so i wont have to use wires and such.
Then looking down the nosewheelwell.....VOILA! (pardon my french)
If i turned the jackscrew servo 180 degrees and moved it backwards just below the retracted nosewheel i could hook it up directly and throw away several parts.
I cant believe i didnt see this before! And as an bonus the pushrods to the mains could be positioned in a much better way. This means i can have the main jack below just in front of the nosewheelwell. Easy access all around.
Im VERY happy with this. I think im gonna try this sleeping thing more often!

Mate, I have just found your thread...... Love what you do.
BTW, while an Ultra Bandit would be nice to own, it probably would not be your favourite jet..Scratch builds are so much more satisfying.

Nosegear servo in the works! Not really upp to writing a bunch so i just post some pics!
Its gonna need microswitches and stuff later about 3 inches of movement.
surprisingly strong on 1,5 V but very slow! Hope 4,8V will speed things up a bit.

The nosegear servo is burried in the wheelwell. Only one microswitch, there is gonna be another. Also made a motor hatch. Tomorrow im gonna do the other. Already done that one before but it needed to be bigger! The darned fan wouldnt fit. Looks alright i think.

Other hatch is done! Fixed airintake number two with some balsa and a lot of sanding. And i began to line the wheelwells with Depron to smooth things for the fiberglass or whatever im gonna use as a topcovering there.

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
A while ago i found that the nose (fron fuselage really) of my Mig was hangin low. So i did a bit of a nosejob, problem is i overdid it. Its hard sometimes to see these things when the machine is so big you cant asemble the whole thing at once. Anyway i fixed the problem yesterday and i think it went okay. You can se the balsa wedge i one of the photos. I also did some more work on the wheelwells. Also started on the big hatches needed to start the engines. I intend to use the starter directly on the spinner.

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
Ok! Starter hatch. I lined the hatch with balsa. Then i built a balsa frame on small distances (0,8mm ply) Then i tried to cut the hole in the pod accordingly. Somewhat difficult, good thing im gonna glue this with polyurethane glue as it foams with moisture. The hatch needs hinges and i made these myself (of course) from ply, brass tube, pianowire and some fibreglass.

Had to stuff my Mig away! Have to build some workrelated stuff. Will take about a week. Thought to show the (slow) progress on my own Fan unit. Im working occasionally on the centerbody of what will basically be a byron sized fan for my 1/5 Viggen project. It will have three of these.

RE: Giant DF project on a tight budget
Have been doing som small stuff like blisters where i cant keep the mechanics completely inside the fuse.
Also made the second main gear. still got a few parts to do.
Then i took my incredibly advanced CadCNC (not) foamcutter and cut some wings! Pretty big.
Needs some structure as they are very thin (4cm in the root) Also leading and trailing edges from balsa.
Then there was X-mas...... so i made som X-mas gifts to the grandkids. Swing line model turned out really nice! Might make an RC-variant.
Have started to do some of the fiberglasswork for joinertubes in the wing and thrust tubes. Long! I had to make my plugg almost 125 cm (50 inches or so).
Well, Happy New year and all that!

Jonas, lovethe work and craftsmanship you are showing us. Is your plan to fabricate everything or just the stuff you cant find and or buy? Your fan unit you mention is roughly the size of a byron fan. IS there a reason you dont use a byron or a commercially available fan?
