Comp ARF BAE Hawk build thread
#2426

Sad news. I sincerely hope that they make a new one. Would be perfect with a 1:4,5 scale for 160-180 turbine which flies better than the wingdropping Airworld 1:4,5, and is lighter than the heavy Skymaster 1:4,75. But I guess everybody wants to fly the funny looking canoos nowadays. But in the end their design all origin from the Hawk. Like Silvestri’s Avanti, then the Pirotti which ended up in the Rebels and finally the Futura and all the similar looking planes. All based on the Hawk with low wing, dihedral tail and side mounted intakes.

That said, B Ae via Duncan Simpson, sent me drawings which showed the exact locations and angles of the wing dressings, which I have replicated.
Heres one, flown at three JWMs at 19.9 kg.

Good point DW, I did not realize the cockpit was no longer available. It makes a big contribution to my Hawk as a standout feature. I guess the demise of Airtech was another factor. I may be wrong here but I think there was a period where the transition from the Airtech to an electric replacement left a lot of people scratching their heads and passing.
I wouldn't say this Hawk won't drop a wing! Although I would say it is pretty forgiving. It gives you a lot of notice. I have a good friend who lost his early on in a final turn roll over. And when mine was new (15th flight) I let the nose get way too high after a bounce and it rolled, easily repairable but the Hawk will continue to pitch up (pilot error) until it stops flying, and then roll rather than sink. I think all Hawks will do that. But that is an extreme deck angle. So don't do that. The plus side is it snaps great! It is a really good aerobatic machine due to its rudder authority and fuselage side area. One of the best planes I have ever owned of any kind for K/E passes and can even do a rolling loop
DG nice picture! And FWIW shows the perfect deck angle for landing the Hawk, just hold that until it settles, beautiful.

Weight makes the biggest difference. I’ve managed to get mine ‘tippy’ twice in 14 years, both times I was landing early with lots of fuel and tried to hold it off same as when it is light on fuel. Mine is super light still (under 27lb) and lands very slowly
It’s a lovely aeroplane in knife edge, mine will climb strongly in KE, if I put a 160 in it I think it would KE loop!
Some people just have no feel, they can flick anything…

that was only the second flight so I was taking it easy on the cells. Around 210A full power. We ended up around 7 mins flight time.
Tam I think did the twin.

I just placed an order for a half depth cockpit for pilot busts for my hawk. They also produce a full depth cockpit, and the price is equal to or maybe a bit less than the qoute I received years ago from Der Jet.

Welcome to 2023 prices. Since it’s the best Scale flying Hawk made, it’s worth what it costs. It was never intended to be super scale, although the outline is spot on. I have had a few customers add detail, they enjoy making their Hawk unique.
Anyway, it’s gone so you don’t have to agonise anymore.

Market here is different, Hawks and Red Arrows are like F-16’s in NA.
Sold the last one end of last year, but since in Europe new jet sales have reduced considerably and there are plenty of used examples out there, we are OK.

Installed pitot tube in the vertical fin. The Futaba TAS01 reads wrong speed if installed in the fuselage where turbine creates vacuum.
Added vortex generators and fences on main wing.
Perfect building weather conditions in Norway nowadays…

Thank you. I'll be honest I'm not sure now, as I have been moving it back. I still would say it's still slightly nose heavy.
I have moved all 3 batteries, 2 for the radio 2s 2600mAh and 1 x 3s LiFe for the turbine, these are now on a plate I made, which is just above the leading edge of the wing opening and below the forward part of the main fuel tank, I have a Kingtech 130G4+ and even with this engine it has far more power then needed, I think a 120 would be perfect.

Sure. Mine is hollow and locked with steel pin. If you install those cover plates pin might not be needed. I did not like to glue it in case of some maintenance...
Mine flies with X120 now and I also think that is the sweet spot. Used to fly a lot with 140XBL but such engine is not needed IMHO. Too bad that the landing gear went so difficult to get that good plane had to be discontinued...

Test flew the last CARF Hawk produced yesterday, quite fitting that the First and Last Red Arrows kits fly in my local club 🙂
