747 AIR FORCE ONE
#26
I wonder who is going to pay for this? I don't think they realize how complex and expensive a 1/7th scale 747 can be. But hey, looking at the web site, its being managed by a company that quote specializes in 1/7th scale aircraft and "can make any aircraft flying or not" lol. Why would we help a commercial enterprise for free?

Found this in his main profile.
Airplane Experience - 44 years building
- 0 years operating
- Expert pilot
He can't be that smart if he is a student and has 44 years building experience. Must still be looking for the front door of the school. 44 years building experience and 47 years trying to pass the 4th grade.
I guess we can see where the attitude is coming from. Also never operating a model but being an expert pilot must mean he is far above our skills guys.
Good luck junior!!
Go home and have some milk and cookies if you can get your mom to put them on a plate for you.
Some of you Sothern California guys have to recognize the Harrier. It use to show up at the Pasadena show every year and had the two Airtronics 6 channel transmitters zip tied to a sheet of plywood. The guy behind that one was the king of the dunces!!!

The website looks like a high school student made it. There are numerous spelling errors. He goes from 0 to a 10 when anyone questions him about the project and answers in ALL CAPS to show his anger.
Are we sure he's even hit puberty yet? Don't worry little guy. That hair's SUPPOSED to grow down there. I can just picture the acne-marked and oily face trying to explain the scope of the project. Also, note how he hasn't been online since his initial "tantrum". You guys can certainly smell BS!
And Hustler, please don't confuse this thread with the incredible work you are doing. These projects are light years apart.
On a positive note, I will say that the little models that he makes (under the guise of an international corporation) look quite nice. Very smooth finish.
This was edited in the spirit of support to a possibly very noble act.
Good luck with your project.

HERE YE,HERE YE;
This project is an after-school project that I am submitting a proposal and budget to NSF for funding, at first we were just considering a 1/7th scale aircraft but then we discussed it and came to the conclusion that a proof of concept 'pilot program should be institued and so we decided to go with a 1/20 scale version to prove the concept, AND THEN DO THE 1/7TH as a final project. We don't have a schedule because we first have to submit the proposal and get it approved, SO I'm doing an 'out of pocket' reference model which is what's on the website as a summer pilot program at the school, It's an anti-gang type school in the Inglewood area near Los Angeles. This is a serious program under consideration for implementation in the schools in this area, and compensation will be given to whomever participates from an instructional point of view. Quite a few people had told me that this would be an uphill battle and I figure that if it was easy then anybody could do it....but look....confirmation? I'm still going to do it, even if it's by myself, I just thought that they're were somebody that wanted to give kids an alternative based on what we already do anyway,...know what I have a letter from NSF if anybody wants to read [email protected]

You are correct. The CRPA is for an active NSF-funded research PI.
I know you are very passionate about your project and have a good plan for reaching out to partner organizations in the ISE field. I suggest that you also contact my colleague, Dr. Sylvia James ([email protected]). Dr. James specializes in ISE's after school programs and can assist you with questions relative to achieving your objectives in that area of ISE.

NOW this forum is starting to make sense. I'm not sure why it started the way it did, but it is getting on the right track now.
I think what you're doing is very admirable. Like I said before, your fiberglass and resin work on the models look very professional. I hope you have success in scaling this up to the 1/7th size. Time will tell how this project develops.

If there is 21st century grant, or STEM money floating around to build 1/7th scale working model 747s when I can't get approval to repair the eyewash station, replace the broken faucet in my demonstration bench, or install an anemometer for my classroom, somebody at the department of education has some serious explaining to do.

Hello All;
FYI; ISE (Informal Science Education) is a grant offered by NSF which is on the 'grants.gov' website, The section for which am applying is called EAGER, you can look that up in the Grant Proposal Guide on the NSF website, maximum funding is for $300,000.00 but it has to be justified, and I can't do that and be honest with myself, and besides what kind of example is that setting for the kids? No we have to be real with this because who knows when this will come around again. The tenative budget that I have for whoever signs on to help us (and can get to L.A.) is right now about $1,500.00 p/mo (1/7th scale will probably be about a 3 year program, but that's after the 1/20th is up and demonstrating accross the country, which will probably be about 1 year itself) part time work M-Th 2-6:30pm for the 1/20th scale and about the same timeframe but a longer period because the 1/7th is so much bigger, I'm looking at about 4 schools on the 1/20th model and about 10 or 15 on the 1/7th bird and I've spoken to 2 museums that are intrested in the projects, not only from the after-school viewpoint, but how many have actually seen VC-25A closeup.
NSF says their evaluation period after they recieve the proposals is at least 6 months. They try to respond back to you with a "yea or nea" answer. Referencing the scheduling issue, quite the contrary I have a timeframe for completion but it'll be based on when we are awarded the grant. That's the reason for the 1/84 scale model that you see on the site, it is all scratchbuilt, balsawood plugs, 'glass fuse & structure' so yessir this project is a whole lot more than a notion, and we will be showing the kids (Jr. & Sr. High School aged kids) the whole entire process, very serious consideration and thought have gone into this project,.....so anyways if you guys are intrested, you know where to find me. I just want to make a difference in some kids lives, show them some possibilities other than gangbanging and rapping......bye,bye.

AMEN.....!!
Schools in our state are closing or seriously underfunded right now. I can think of far better ways to educate our youth in after-school programs (even model related) than building a completely useless, unusable, giant "Airforce One". We spend enough taxpayer dollars on the real one [:@]
The thought is commendable, the execution is idiotic. You could spread the concept through far many more schools, achieving the same if not better education/experience for the kids with much more logical projects than this. Personally, I would not contribute a dime to this project.

The goal it seems would be better served by getting the kids involved in something a bit more practical. I'm assuming most of them haven't even had the joy of flying a simple rc trainer. If kindling an interest in an aviation career instead of knocking over the local 7/11 is what you are after then why not give them something a bit more attainable. Certainly something that wouldn't cost tens of thousands of dollars. ( and it will )
There is always someone to tell you something can't be done. That's not my point. I think by putting an after school class together that takes kids and explains to them principles of flight - airfoils, propulsion, aerodynamics etc. and apply that to more simple airframes that they can actually have a good chance of building and flying themselves will go alot further than something so grand. The President's plane is great, one of the prettiest jumbos to grace the sky, but you seem to be betting the ranch on Air Force One to change a kid's life. "Traveling the country flying it at military airshows", what's all that about? How is that going to help your inner city problems? Who's paying for that? As stated a couple of posts ago "your thought is comendable" but other than possibly ending up with a huge 747 your plan as stated just doesn't seem to make any sense at all. Remember the KISS principle. Keep it simple, attainable in a reasonable amout of time and give them something they can more personally connect to. Your chances of changing a kid's life (which is what you really want - right?) will be much better.
Best of luck,
Dan

Thank you Sir;
Your words do offer consideration and I appreciate that, serious thought will be directed toward your idea because like you said the goal is to spark an intrest in kids that will be 'life changing'. I hear your heart, thank you for caring.

What a great way to get Gangbangers and such to quit crime and become respectable members of the community.. Lets spend $300,000.00 of tax payers money ( which by the way.. There Ain't no taxpays money left !!! ) and build a huge model airplane and let all these bad kids sit around and stare at it !!! That would certainly make me give up a life of crime and drugs !!!! Who dreams up this crapola, and why is the U.S. government paying for it !!!! I'm calling my congressman and raise some hell !!! No wonder this country is so srewed up !!!!! All I can say is, They Don't Want Me In Charge !!! I'm PISSED.

I just want to say hi on this thread so I can say that I actually participated in this thread before it gets locked and shut down. I was meaning to do that on the other guy's thread about his stolen jet that was sold to some brazilian, but i was too late. Anyway, I have to give the kid some credit for trying to improve some other kids' lives including his own, but get real... (insert fancy comment here).
On a more serious note, it certainly does p**s me off how random people can setup an account on rcu and demand to obtain information and support on a completely ridiculous project (not to mention with such TERRIBLE attitude).
While im thinking about ridiculous ideas....
I want to build an RC plane that can be refueled by an RC flying tanker and have solar panels on the wings to recharge the RX batteries so I can fly ALL day[sm=rolleyes.gif].

Sorry Sir;
DARPA has already done that, you're too late, but if you really want a mind blower then take a look at this; Submersible Aircraft (on the grants.gov website) Defense Advance Research Projects Agency, just thought I'd help you out a little.

I did a bit of checking and I think you can all be pretty darn sure that this is not something that is going to get any real funding.
Those of you who would like to do something real can do what I did. I bought a box of Delta Darts 10 years ago and called up my local middle school. I got a local lumber yard to donate a sheet of soundboard that I hacked into building boards on the table saw. A local hardware store donated 25 xacto knives, and a fabric store contributed boxes of T pins. I have been building Delta Darts with 12 year olds every year since, and I now can report that several of the kids have graduated from aeronautics and engineering programs. Others just decided that maybe they ought to stay in school.
A pair of Kadets, a few gallons of fuel, and your willingness to haul a minivan full of kids to the flying field will do more to help kids stay in school and avoid gangs and other bad behaviours than watching even the coolest jet.
Be careful though, the rewards of working with kids are high, though not monetary. You might quit your day job and become a middle school math and science teacher...which is why I'll probably never be able to afford a jet.

I am very surprised at how everyone is acting on this. The gentlemen doesn't know much about R C and is looking for help. Hey I am the first one to jump up and call "B S" but I haven't seen anything to deserve the reaction he has gotten. If you don't want to help that's fine but don't hang him ! All of you know there was a community organizer that wanted to change your life and no one *****ed, now he is president and ruining your life. This guy just wants to build a model. Give him a BREAK ! Butch
As much "Hell" as I raise I can't believe I just wrote this ! But I did ! It must be the Xanex.
