Default UB CG tips

I have a BVM Ultra Bandit that has to be test flown . as i am familiar with the small bandit arf does the bigger brother fly the same . I prefered 15mm rear CG in the small bandit as it didnt give any large pitch changes on full flap, So would it be ok if i moved the CG back a bit before i maiden the UB. any other good \bad habits i need to know,,right now it balances on the recomended pin holes . so will all the experienced UB pilots chime in and settle my nerves before i push the throttle up.

Move the CG back about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch. The stock setting is pretty nose heavy. Other than that, flies like a dream.

Hello Yoga fly,
Ragz and I could help you get in touch with our friend in chennai who is an expert with the UB. Infact last week he managed to safely land the UB after a flameout.
PM me or call me on +919820153747.

WOW, 2 UBs in India. I wish i could afford one. Yoga fly where do you live in India? Sorry my fault but i have not heard of you earlier, the jet community in India is very small and most of us know each other. If you have seen the other UB fly and know our friend G-Man. Please contact him for advice, i think he will be your best bet for first hand information. He has a lot of experience flying big jets from a boomi XL all the way up to SG hawk and UBs. He will be more than happy to help you with your test flight or better test fly it for you.

Best regards
Chaitanya.

Yes i know him and we fly together most of the time as we are from the same place. but thats where the similarity ends as he prefers the setup as recomended by the manual and does not deviate from it. I have seen all the models you mentioned fly by him and a few more like viper , reaction etc but i have my own pref in setup and flying style so im looking for some tips from as many UB owners as i can so i can narrow down my choices on setup tips

I set my cg back on my Ultra B 1/8". I know not much. I also set my CG back 3/4" on all my small bandits.

As you have noticed BV's stuff flies a little nose heavy. Which, is how I like MY airplanes to fly, but not as much as BV usually recommends. I don't think the Ultra is as nose heavy as the small Bandits usually are.

I found that the Ultra will pitch up on Flap deployment and with crow (I use 3/8") it pitches up even more. I found that I needed to mix down elevator with both take off and landing flap settings.

The elevator has alot of authority (unlike the small Bandits which can run out of elevator if you make your final approach with the nose up) on final and the Ultra B liked to be on final with the nose up using throttle to slow the decent. I actually touched down with 1/8 throttle or so.

SSOOOO, on final the Ultra B is not like the smaller bandits (Bandit ARF, Super Balsa Bandit or Composite bandit). The ultra comes in with a touch of nose up.

I also found the Ultra was not as "quick" as bandits, probably because it's almost twice as big!

Raf

An easy way to do it is that it should just stay on the nose gear with the canopy off. If you lightly push down on the tail, it should drop.

That's the way mine is set up and it handles well. You might set it up with measurements and double check it this way.

If you are using the 3rd aux tank up between the intakes and you normally land with it full, do this test with the aux tank full.

Good luck with it ... Keith.

Hello Yoga fly,

You seem to know our friend G-Man pretty well, strange he never mentioned you to me or ragz earlier. If you dont mine me asking whats your name anyway, I am sure we must have met earlier somewhere, i just cant remember, how long have you been flying r/c jets.

This is cool.. the more UB's the merrier.  There are 2 already in chennai, and mine is slated to arrive in feb 10, if all goes according to plan.  Maybe we should all get together for a UB fly-in on my private runway...  What engine do you fly yours with?  Mine will have the 200sx...

cheers

Yogafly,

I asked for your details so i could invite you for our annual event at ammby vally next month. We will have a good number of jets flying there, so if you could fly your UB there it would be a show stopper.Cant comment on the technical part of the UB because i cannot afford/ own one.
Ragz and Xantos a bvm meet. WOW.My composite Bobcat is packing right now to go to Hyderabad for the weekend.
Yoga fly will send you a PM.

Yogafly, I am wondering if I should get mine turn key or make it here.  How was your build experience?  I am told the UB's have more work than a KC or a BARF.  Any truth to it?  I have built BVM's before and have enjoyed the build process.  However, I dont like any colour schemes that bvm have currently, and I cannot paint to save my life... that is why I am considering a turnkey custom painted UB... A full chrome/metal finish would be awesome.  Did you get a stock scheme or a custom scheme?  Did you paint in house in Chennai?  The AMT Oly is a beast....I wish you had a build thread here on RCU...

PS:  Is there a good painter in Chennai?  I have a skygate viper and a 3m extra 260 that needs super paint jobs... Maybe I could send the planes there or request the painter to come here.. Really appreciate some advice on this front...

cheers

I thought the Ultra to be a bit more than a BARF, but not THAT much. The flaps are easier, there is only one hatch to match, the cockpit is more work, the component install was butter...

Painting on the other hand, I wouldn't want to do that!

Ditto on the cockpit! I painted mine and it was like painting a truck! I do enjoy having one that looks unique. Mine is a little aft of the marked CG and flies great.
