Default F-18

These make awesome models (the twin that is).

Only think I have noticed is that the wingspan is 1/6 scale, and the fuse length is about 1/7 so unless you are competing is scale I guess it does not matter.

Absolutely.

The twin hornet is a huge project. It represents a pretty hefty investment of time and merchandise. Also, it's a big airplane to haul around! True, it's wingspan is a little bigger than scale (not that it has kept it from winning MANY of the big trophies), but overall, it's a fantastic scale model--just not a jet you'd sell to a beginner.

Even in the case of the single, I can think of many better choices for a first jet. If someone did have it as a first jet, though, success can definitely be had, given that the criteria for getting into jets at all is there. If you have questions about the single, there are at least three guys I know of who are currently building one. The answers are out there!

Well, if you are looking for a "jet" and don't care about the power plant - you might consider looking at Jet Hanger Hobbies F-86 kit. It has a lot of building to do with this kit, but if built over the winter, one could do it and then paint it in the spring. Its ducted fan and with an OS 46 and the turbax fan, it moves around pretty good. I finally managed to get my first flight on mine this last weekend - it flew pretty good. Flew for about 7 minutes and just got into the second saddle tank - total of 20 ounces on board. If you do get this kit, PM me and I'll give you some pointers on building it.

Default see what works

To steal the words of Bob Violett -- go the to events and see what works before you make a purchase.

If you are interested in jets please feel free to attend the Maine Jet Rally on September 6-7th in Biddeford Maine at the Biddeford Municipal Airport. Visit the web site for directions: http://www.icommercesystems.com/mainejets

You will get a very good idea of what might make a good beginner jet, and you will also get to see quite a variety -- from ducted fan to turbine.

Starbucks,

Yellow aircraft makes a Starfire sport jet that is excellent as a first jet.

Default First Jet

Many good ones mentioned above and although F-18 single is good (with ailerons or elevons both control versions fly great) perhaps a simpler to build/fly jet like the yellow Starfire, JHH F-86 or new Hawk. I would not start with a twin, but it could be next!!

My first was Yellow F-4, as I simply love it, but it also has great characteristics (good wing area, wide tri gear, muscle car looks, and most important a tailhook ) Os.77 and 9 3/4 lbs empty.

As always, seek advice, ask questions and watch others fly and then ask some more questions from your local jet jocks.

Default a starfire

here is a starfire from yellow aircraft. This will take a lil time to build and paint. BUT WELL WORTH IT IN MY BOOK. it has a very wide speed envelope and there is an option for removeable wings for easier transporting.
It comes with standard wire legs but you can use struts.

There have been many who "cut their teeth" on this model and it has a real good reputation for not having any bad flight characteristics.
