Hello
Here in Cyprus, the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) has been giving us some trouble lately for flying our jets at a British MoD airbase ( the British have no problem with us ). They say that we are in too close proximity with Larnaca international airport, which is 22 km or 13.6 statute miles away. Also this airbase is officially marked as a danger-restricted area for civil aircraft.
Does anybody here now of, or flys from a modeling club or airfiled that is in close proximity with an international or civilian airport?
This information will help us a lot. They told us that if this is the case in other locations around the world, then they would allow us again to use this airfield.
We have been flying jets here without any problems for the last 6 years.
Thanks in advance for any information.

there are 2 fields we fly our jets at., the first field is our club field, we are located about 3/4 mile from a full scale small airport, they know we are here and we give each other respect and watch for each other if they should come into our airspace and sometimes they do. meaning they are below 500 ft and crossing our field. We even had their SNJ do a low fly-by over use us about a month ago and this was planned......There is an International Airport about 10 miles Northeast of us and this has Never been an issue.
Our second location is at a small airport where there is about 4 of us jet pilots fly. 1st rule is full scale has right of way. Other then that, we do not have any problems with airport. Many occassions, full scale pilots come over and hang out with us. Big advantage for us is that I have a Nav-Com radio. When we fire up the jets, one of us has the radio, we can monitor incoming and outgoing traffic and also communicate with the pilots if needed.

Similar here, we fly about 1 mile from a small airfield and look out for each other, any jets flying we have our own club rule making a spotter mandatory, we also by CAA regs have to keep below 400 ft.

We are currently flying at a full-size airport with small and medium aircraft taking off
and landing at regular intervals. We have been given a radio crash course and communicate
with the planes directly, they have right of way, but will often do an extra round if we need
to get one of our jets down. We do not allow models and full size to share the air space, we
will always land before a landing or take-off.
They love us down there, and there have no problems whatsoever.

As I recall, didn't the rule state that if you are within three miles of a "Controlled Airport" (one with an FAA tower) there is a 400 foot ceiling, and you are under their auspicies?
Airports without a tower are another matter.

Thanks for your fast replies guys. Some very usefull info coming. Keep it coming.

P.S. We do have a full licence from the RAF Commanding Officer but the problem is with the Cyprus CAA, the problem just aroused a month ago for no apparent reason after 6 trouble free years, other than we are too close to Larnaca international.

from AMA's web site, under saftey code;
3. I will not fly my model aircraft higher than approximately 400 feet above ground level, when within three (3) miles of an airport without notifying the airport
operator.
do we or can we read this as to, IF we do notify the airport we CAN(????) fly over 400 feet?

The Denver R/C Eagles field is straight north of Centennial Airport, one of the busiest non scheduled flight airports in the US. The yellow line on the picture below represents 2.9 miles. DRCE has flown at this location for over 35 years with not problems. The flyers obey the 400ft. altitude restriction.

The DCRC Club field (39 08 50.56N 77 20 15.39W) is 13.9 miles from the runways at Dulles International Airport near Washington DC. I may be wrong, but I'd bet that Dulles International is busier than Larnaca. Jets are allowed at the DCRC field. Occasionally, the FAA will issue TFR's (Temporary Flight Restrictions) for events in the DC area that will shut down flying at clubs around the area, but DCRC isn't the only club that is affected by those - clubs in other parts of Maryland and Northern Virginia must be closed as well for those TFR's.

I think you may be right about Dulles being busier than Larnaca

Rich I think the field elevation is right at 5700ft. We get a lot of twin engine jets right over the field on final by they are usually at 1,000 above the ground or slightly higher.
Helicopters going from Centennial to downtown Denver can be a problem. They are closer to 500 ft. high.

Thanks in advance for any information.

we are located less then 10 km away from MAA netherlands.
on take of and landing the cross even our field.
we have a direct phone number with the tower and they have our phone number at the field.
we have to be online if we are flying , and our limit is 300 ft in therorie :-).
and it has worked fine for the last 20 years or so.
just speak with those guys about these small rules they will feel happy
