Default Century Jet F-105 build

Ok guys here is going to be one hell of a offbeat but awesome build. Century Jet F-105 Thud with new Ram 750 turbine. Yes thats what I said NEW Ram 750 turbine. Got the deluxe F-105 turbine version from Bruce at Century. You name it this kits got it. Quality kit with every piece of hardware and carbon fiber bypass. Got the new Ram 750 turbine from a very honest guy in Baton Rouge,LA named Phil Nuza. Thanks Phil going to put that older air start baby to good use. Got time now to build this F-105 so it's going to be a fast build. Been building for 30 years so stay up kiddies. Henschel is back in Ca so jet will have it's first flight in So Cal. Hemet maybe?

Here are some more pics. Working on sub assemblies now. Want to get small time consuming items first.

Mine is getting close to getting back in the air. Maybe late September. I might take mine to Muroc for the first. Have fun with the retracts![&:]

Cool pic of Thud. Been working on mine most of the day. Found some problems with the stab bearing block in the fuse. Was easy fix plus much stronger. Cost was only price of brass tubing and small pieces of g-10. Will get some pics out tomorrow of fix. Also have easy ideas to aligning stab bearing shafts and pinning stab control arm. Got to dig the Thud. Classic Nam/Republic design. Nobody does it better than Republic.

The Thud is not just a loud boom boom go fast kids modern jet. It has HISTORY! Alot of guys died in thuds in proud sevice for thier country. Thier survival rate ranked with the 1/8 Air Force bombers of WW II. They were right at the tip of the spear in the Vietam War. F-18?, F-16?,F-15. Push button jets! The Thud was all grit and sweat! Blood and Guts! For both sides!
And it really looks BADASS!
The F-105F/G Wild Weasel mission is just like an old west gunfight. They flew right down the "gun barells" of the SAM sights. Who will fire first?

I started a thread on this bird a few years ago,-Check it out.- http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_15..._1/key_/tm.htm

Hey Dail,

I like your quote! It's so true! Some of the finest modeling work I've ever seen was on JHH birds. I've lately seen some GIGANTIC 'scale' jet models that are so out-of-scale that it's embarrassing. I look at them and wonder, "With all that room, why not do it right??"

Yes we know!!! You hijack all the Centuy Jet F-105 threads with your $10,000 (or more) project. The Century Jet kit is MUCH less than that for us regular folks who like Thuds. Don't get me wrong, I cant wait to see it.

I agree with you on your quote about those older Century series jets. Those were in your face down in the weeds stick and rudder type aircraft. Just can't beat the lines of the Thud. Mine is the Wild Weasel F model. Who sells the decals for the shark mouth scheme, outer wing fuel tanks and a good cockpit kit? Any problems with the retract installation?

I would try Aeroloft for the decals, since they used to be distributors for Century Jet kits.

Here are the pics of the stab bearing housing. Took the 2 S1 bearing plates and laid them flat. Glued them together and glued 21/32 tubing into the S1 plates. Next drilled a 5/16 hole in the center of a piece of .015 G-10. Take the 5/16 tubing and G-10 and glue it to the S1 plates. Oil the ball bearing and the tubing inside the S1 plate so you do not get glue in it. Slide the aluminum shaft into the 5/16 tubeing and install the ball bearing into S1 plate before glue dries. Your 5/16 tubing,G-10 plate,Aluminum shaft,S1 plate and the ball bearing will be in perfect alignment. Then drill hole for 5/16 tubing in fuse and glue whole assembly into fuse. No worries about glueing bearing to fuse plus you can put a little grease in the bearing assembly.

Here is the turbine that is going into F-105. Brand new/older Ram 750. Serial number 750059. Older air start but still is a beast. Y'all know how big the airframe on the F-105 is. This thing barely fits. 18+ lbs of thrust @ 115,000 rpms. God hope the airframe stays together. Going to bench start it this weekend. Maybe send video of it. Have pics of sub assemblies for tomorrow. If it's not a Thud it's a dud.

OK starting up the thread again. Been doing a lot of work on the sub assemblies. Here are some pics of the front landing gear assembly. Installed all the servos and the retract valve. Easier to install all the items shown before installing into fuse. You will notice I put the pull pull cables on top of the bell crank instead of the lower. When installed on the bottom of the bell crank swivel balls would cross up and the strut would jam the bell crank so servo would bind when moving. On the top works perfect. This is a deviation from what the instructions call for so I have to say that anything I do is entirely up to the builder.

Next up are stab servo mounts and wheel brake mounts. Mounts were made out of laminated .050 mil spec phenolic. Got a few sheets of the phenolic at an aerospace surplus store in Dallas dirt cheap. Stuff is very strong and light weight. Just a little tough to cut and drill. Servo mounts I have been using are all BVM carbon fiber.

Here are some pics of the rudder servo mount and mounts for the ECU, battery packs and receiver. Again made out of .050 phenolic. Battery packs will be velcrowed and zip tied to mounts hence the notches in the sides of the mounts.

Pica are stabs and fin. These took awhile to build. I used .75 fiberglass cloth and Z poxy finishing resin. Will take some pics of how I installed the stab blocks and torgue rods. Easy to do and they come out perfect. Also if you are thinking about purchasing a CJM F-105 go with the F model. You will have lots of more space up front to install all of the radio equipment and fuel tanks. Plus I think the Wild Weasel looks better.

I love this aircraft and will follow this thread with enthusiasm. I remember a D/F version turning up at a UK jet meeting (RAF Odiham) a good few years ago. I think it was Mike Kulzick's model brought over from Texas. Best wishes for the completion and yes I follow B1 Bob's thread which I love and if he is reading this thread, can you at least stick with the project and lets see it fly. I think we were all left in anti climax with the cougar build which stopped at the piont of airframe completion. Ron.

Thanks Ron. Love this aircraft also. Sparing nothing to finish it. I have everything for it. Only thing is to figure out which fuel cells to use in it. Maybe fuel cells from a Tam Jets F-4? Putting a brand new/older Ram 750 with the original air start. Air start saves a bunch of weight. Thing out to be a bullet with the Ram 750 in it.

Some pics of the front fuse and landing gear assembly installed. Doors also installed. Front fuse ready to be attached to rear fuse. Tip on installing the offset hinges. Go by the plans. They are on the money. The offset hinges that come with deluxe kit are nylon Rocket Industries. Sand the flat part of the hinge that is going to be glued to the fuse and doors with 80 grit sand paper. Sand the fuse and doors with 80 grit real good, this one is important. Use medium Zap to glue to fuse and door. Plans call for using fiberglass cloth to reinforce hinge to door and fuse. I mixed up some 30 minute epoxy and BVM milled fiberglass and mixed it up to where it was almost like tooth paste. Put epoxy mix over the flat part of the hinge where it's glued to the door and fuse. Overlap the flat part of the hinge with the epoxy mix by about a 1/8th inch. Mix flows over the hinge and to the doors and fuse. Hinges will never pulls out.

Thanks for the detailed build info and photos. The jet community does not build from kits like this very often. I will refrence this thread when I get to my "D" model. After I finish a few other models first.
By the way, my C.J. F-105F is ready for taxi tests!

Corey will keep the pics coming. I know not many people build kits anymore, it's a lost art. Keeps the Chinese in rice heaven. I only know about building kits. Kind of an old school guy. Been building kits for over 30 years. Heard too many horror stories about guys flying those Asian kits and paid big money only to watch them take the eternal dirt nap because of faulty glue or workmanship. Lets see, paying a guy 10 cents an hour=$5,000 dollar plus dirt nap? Nope. Not me. Least I know my KIT was done right. Satisfaction going to flying field and plunking down a jet hardly anyone has ever seen and questions I get was like "Is that an ARF" Feel like I want to smack em. Dieing art building kits. I had a AMD BAE Hawk. Got it in a trade. Once I saw the workmanship I traded it to a guy in California for a real plane. A brand new still in the original box BVM Agressor II with the carbon fiber retracts. Had so many kits at the time I had it up for sale on RCU for $800.00. Don't know if you ever saw that ad. Anyway a guy in Baton Rouge, LA traded me a brand new Ram 750 turbine for the Agressor kit. Thats the turbine going into the F-105. Rest assured this kit will be finished and flying soon. Go to flying field and people will say here in California "Dude thats is one narly plane, that is sick". Thanks Bruce Sanders at Century Jet for the totally gag me with a spoon F-105 kit due! Y'all come back now ya hear.
