RE: Unexpected engine performance.

We are hoping to put a few more gallons through the engine flying today, I'll take my cameras and get some footage.

I'll try and shoot the start sequence, t/o, climb, general aero's and landing, then put them up on my website and post the url.

Just enjoyed a good days flying, pics of Super Reaper instalation below.

We shot some digital video but I've no idea how to download it onto the pc, possibly I need a video capture card installing ? Any of you video experts got suggestions, the last pic is of the various connection sockets on the camera, looks like the dv socket is firewire ? I'd welcome any advice.

You need some sort of software that can interface to what looks like a sony camera you have their. I use Adobe Premier. You just start the software, plug in the camera and then you run everything from the computer. The software controls the camera.

OK, thanks Matt, I'll check the destruction book, possibly I won't need any more hardware.

RE: Unexpected engine performance.

Oh yeah you need a firewire (1394) port on your computer. Not sure if these new cameras can be controlled with the USB interface your camera has, if it is USB 2.0 and your camputer has that, it is almost as fast as forewire.

You definitely do not need any sort of A/D converter, that is the beautiy of the digital camera.

I'LL POKE AROUND TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY SHAREWARE (oops sorry) packages you can try.

WOW you guys rock with your turbines but usb 2.0 is faster then firewire IEEE 1394=400 Mbps usb 2.0 = 480Mbps

Thanks, I guess I need to checkout what's available.

RE: Unexpected engine performance.

I have just managed to upload a short take-off movie here

www.btinternet.com/~robrow/Cap0002.zip

This is my first attempt at video capture and it's zipped, so the quality is not the best but hopefully it should give some idea of the engine performance. RPM was set 10k down from full power and the 10" long grass had just been cut but was still lying on the runway so there was mega drag on the u/c resulting in an almost 90deg kick to the right at the point of rotation.

Any comments about the capture quality and climb performance appreciated. I can also upload some longer movies showing the aerobatic performance.

I think this is the Artes Eagle with AMT wheel 30 lb +

RE: Unexpected engine performance.

I wish my engine did have 30lbs thrust but it is definately not the Spanish engine. I will post pics later of the two engines side by side and you wil see there is a major size difference. Mine is only 100mm casing dia.

Hi Robrow

Glad to see your engine working OK. I try to sent and post those pictures with no success :(. I have the same setup with the DV and firewire (1394) interface with out analog input . The software for the camera is easer to make movie file than JPG image file :D. I try sending the movie file my Email server ERROR (FILE TOO LARGE) [:@]

Why don't you run your engine at full RPM?. That plane can handle the extra power.

RE: Unexpected engine performance.

Your are right. He is using the artes setup. To get 30lb just change your turbine wheel and the NGV to the ARTES SUPER EAGLE WHEEL AND NGV setup your ECU the 128 RPM :D)

RE: Unexpected engine performance.

Sorry to hear you are still struggling with the file upload. I ended up using the usb conection for this and all worked OK, I also used Winzip to make the file as small as possible, this helps when sending and uploading because of server limits.

As this engine is a one-off and no other like it in the world I wanted to see how things went at 140k, particualrly in flight mode before opening the tap more. As you will see from the aerobatic footage there is sufficient power now. Possibly this weekend I may uprate it to 145k to test. I did run it for a long time at 150k during the ground test running program without any problems so hopefully things should be similar in the air.

I'll try later to upload some longer more aerobatic footage.

Rob. ;)

Some more flying video here www.btinternet.com/~robrow/Cap0005.zip sorry about the quality, I'll have to try the firewire system to improve the image.

RE: Unexpected engine performance.

140k is not too much RPM for this turbine.....The AMT NL Mercury in the HP configuration (High Performance) turns 149k----The AMT USA 180 SP (Special Performance) I believe turns around 151k.

Nice work on your engine. After you get accurate thrust readings, if they are indeed as much as you think for your given RPM, you may want to call AMT and see if they are interested in your mods.:D

RE: Unexpected engine performance.

Thanks for the compliments Kevin, soon as I get a few days when it's not being flown I'll check the thrust but as I said before I'm not expecting any surprises.

The rotor has a safe max rpm of around 152k, so still a lot more to come yet as it is just starting to get into the 'real' power area. ;)

I have uploaded some more video, quality is not best, I'll have to look into the firewire system I think to see if I can improve things.
