RE: TOP GUN
ORIGINAL: John Christensen You are NOT allowed to fly an ARF in Top Gun obviously, but, you can bring whatever plane you want for practise flights. Hence the Lancair and other "less than scale aircraft" present. Why would you bring a practice plane? So you dont scratch the one you are competing with? Isn't it much easier to out-fly a possible static ding from a scraped wingtip, then rely on the static to make up for poor flying because of not being comfortable with the plane? Just curious. |
RE: TOP GUN
Competition at TG is so tough that you need all the points you can get in order to be competitive. The difference in the Top 5 positions somtimes can be messured in less than a quarter of a point. Not everyone brings practice planes, but personally I think it is a good idea. You want your plane to be absolutely pristine for static. A scraped wingtip could be what bumped you a position or two. And, if your practice plane has similar flying characteristics to your competition plane, It really makes more sense to risk that one instead of your scale masterpiece IMHO. (not much sense to bring a Piper Cub if your competition plane is an F-100)

Another Georgia Jets gang member is Craig Gottschang. BVM Rafale with AMT 450 power. Craig won the Sportsman class. No lack of power in this thing, and a great sound too.
Sweet flying Craig... Hope you fly your passengers around with less G-force;) http://www.john-christensen.com/Top Gun 2005/craig.jpg |

RE: TOP GUN
We had two teams from my home club here in Los Angeles. Here is the John Redman/Kelly Rohrbach Team Scale entry. The plane is owned by David Soufer, and David went all out to ensure a sucessful campaign. Plus making sure everyone had a great time.
From left, David Soufer, Team Captain, Owner, fueler, cleaner and all around great guy. Glenn, Team driver (7000 miles) and back up pilot (Every time he got close to the plane he was told to back up;)) John Redman, Pilot, Drinking Buddy and a fairly nice guy[:'(] Kelly Rohrbach, Super builder and BVM rep from Montana where they have up to 7 flying days per year. BVM F-100D with AMT power... ooops sorry John... JetCat Titan http://www.john-christensen.com/Top Gun 2005/soufer.jpg http://www.john-christensen.com/Top ...05/soufer1.jpg http://www.john-christensen.com/Top ...05/soufer2.jpg |
RE: TOP GUN
The photo of the F100s has got to be THE best photo I have ever seen of model aircraft.
Awesome aircraft and brilliant photography.:D EDIT: I've just seen the other pics too. Fantastic. |
RE: TOP GUN
You can always count on Kent Nogy being in one of the top positions when he flies. Kent flew the TamJets F-18 Super Hornet with JetCat Titan power in Pro Am.

RE: TOP GUN
Am I the only one noticeing the nose wheel on the F-5?

RE: TOP GUN
Tim "Mach 4" Redelman was without doubt the fastest guy at Top Gun. I have still not been able to capture him in flight ;)
So, you will have to live with a ground shot. This shows the start up area each flight station has. (5 flight lines) BVM F-4, JetCat turbine... And the red shirt should tell you what radio he flies. http://www.john-christensen.com/Top ...5/redelman.jpg Here is the proof. He is faster than his own shadow. Nose of the aircraft has already left the frame. http://www.john-christensen.com/Top .../redelman1.jpg Even the rocket powered Bell X1 that does a quarter mile in 1.2 seconds was easier to capture http://www.john-christensen.com/Top Gun 2005/bellx1.jpg |
RE: TOP GUN
Team entry from Florida. Jerry Keller, builder and designer. Tommy Woods, pilot. F-104 with AMT 400 power. Stunning paint scheme.
Plane is scratch built. Hats of to Tommy for being able to see those stubby little wings against the grey Sunday sky. Tucking in the retracts after take off. http://www.john-christensen.com/Top Gun 2005/104.jpg |
