RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread
Hey Meps,
Do you have any video of it flying? would be good to see, I don't know of many other 1800 powered machines on video. Cheers, Smithy. |
RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread
Yes, two of my friends took video. As soon as they give me copies I will upload them.

Nice job with the conversion Steve. Cant wait to see the video's.

I ask because I have very little experience at flying, am looking into getting an easy to fly "turbine trainer". I suspect something like that would be way beyond my feeble flying abilities...! Cheers, Smithy. |
RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread
It flies very easy and predictable. I'm carrying 64 oz of fuel including the UAT and I get between four and five minutes of full throttle flying. My last flight, my HDT was indicating 117,000 rpms and I only got four minutes. I ended up going dead stick as I was turning from base to final. It glided better than any other jet that I own.

Steve 117k rpm, hmmm, I was under the impression that the ECU would limit the JJ1800 to 115k? I guess there would be a bit of give and take as there is with the idle, we often see them a bit "erratic" at times. I wonder if the low fuel would cause the slightly high rpms, with less in the way of restriction/suction etc...then again that's less than 2% variation, not bad really considering what it has to do! Cheers, Smithy. |
RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread
Well, My JJ1800 reach 17100 ~ 17300 with full tank, so it's not the fuel issue. (the ECU limit is 150000...)
|
RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread
It was reading 117,00 rpms with full tanks and taxi tank still connected. So far, it has proven to be an awsome engine.

Nice result, it has motivated me to go into the workshop, I need to repaint mine and get it up flying. Knobby while this is not a trainer, like a Baby B, these deltas are stable, not tippy and great fun at high angles of attack. Paul |

The JJ1800 would be in quite a few pieces before it got to that sort of rpms....[:@] As would many other 66mm turbine engines I suspect. For the JJ1800, they're ECU limited to 115,000rpm, unless of course you have a different ECU than the one provided with the engine!! Cheers, Smithy. |
RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread
I bought a JJ1800 starter to fit to my RAM750. I noticed that the motor is free to move inside the housing. Is there a prefered method for locking the motor in place in the housing so it doesn't move fore/aft?

Is there a prefered method for locking the motor in place in the housing so it doesn't move fore/aft? Normally when you tighten the front starter housing onto the rear starter housing, the "split" screw thread of the rear housing will lock the starter in place, alternately, you could put a very small amount of "loctite wick-in" thread locker on the outer can of the starter itself, be sure to get it to the correct "depth" prior to screwing the front cover on. The bendix should have a total travel of ~3-4mm to the compressor nut when it's in the right spot. This should hold it in place fine but still allow it to be removed when required without too much drama. Hope this helps. Cheers, Smithy. |
RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread
A better method is to just use a little bit of clear tape on the motor can if it fits a bit loose in the housing. Works perfect and doesn't make a big mess.

Hi There,
I am looking for some help here, It may well be that someone has asked this before, but 60+ pages is a lot of looking and I need a quick answer if possible. I have received my JJ1400 back from repair together with a temperature probe. It looks like it is too long, the thermocouple wire being 7 inches long. Is this correct? I can only fix the wire to the turbine and not the steel joiner as it is about an inch infront of the engine. Any ideas. Thanks |
RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread
Hi there,
About your JJ14000 Thermocouple I must say the size and length is correct. You should have max 3-4 mm insterted in the hole (never insert that much like the 2nd pic). I usually mount the thermocouple on the alum mounts. I hope this helps. Best Rgds Murat |
RE: JetJoe OWNERS thread
Looks like they sent you a thermocouple for a 1800 turbine. No matter will work fine just longer than the 1400 thermocouple. Make some s bends in the wire (be careful not to bend it too tight a radius) to take up some of the extra lenght if you wish. Could also mount it to the airframe that will work fine to just as long as about 1/8 inch is inside the exhaust cone.
