You need to make guide rail for the fwd nose door to prevent it from catching on the strut knuckle. Below is a pic from Keith Sievers. His is made from brass, but i just made one from aluminum.

Check out Keith's (pilott28) build tips here... http://www.jetpilots.org/knowledge_bank/lightning.pdf

If you haven't done so already, take some time and go back to the beginning of this build thread in 2005 & read thru each post. Almost all of your build questions should be answered. Once you work everything out, you'll really enjoy flying this jet. I got a few more flights on mine this morning.

Hello guys,

Today I have read the CARF Lightning manual (settings)
It is written that with the 1st position of flap we need 2mm down elevator and for second flap position 2mm down more.

This is strange because if you read the posts many pilots need up elevator mix with flaps....

Where is the truth ?

Thanks
JeanFi

Hello JeanFi,

i will with Flap 1.Pos Elev. neutral, and Flap 2.Pos Elev. 2mm up.

The correct positions you must check during flying. Just try it.........

Hello Inconel :o)

This is really strange you have to mix up elevator...!!!!
So the manual is wrong ?? [:o]

RE: Composite-ARF Lightning Build Thread

The manual says : mix 5% down elevator trim on both positions.

So, for normal flying the elevator is 2mm up, Flap 1 = Elevator neutral, maybe ~5% down. For Flap 2 you can mix Elevator up 2mm, or leave it, just like your flying characteristics.

With Flap2 and Elevator 2mm up the Lightning will go light nose down.

I am absolutly pulling my hair out with a UAT air problem. My first 3 flights on my new lightning have all ended in dead sticks. I am using a Artes Rhino, 2 Comp arf tanks, and a BVM UAT. I am getting air pulled into the UAT which eventually unprimes the fuel pump and the turbine quits. I have done everything imaginable to fix this problem. I have double safety wired every connection, replace all fuel lines, and I still get Air bubbles. I have tried 4 UAT tanks and still get the same problem. I have even extensively tested each UAT by taking it out hooking the fuel pump side to my Jersey fueler, dropped a new line straight into the jersey tank completely submerged, safety wired all connections, pull from the UAT, and I still get small air bubbles in the UAT. Through the whole process I never see any air bubbles what so ever in the lines going into the 4 UAT tanks. I have even tried the fest ball cock on the fill line with a cap on the end of that and still getting air. I am completely out of ideas on how to solve this Frustrating problem. Does anyone have any idea what is happening?

Here's mine - Note the balsa block glued in at midspan of the actuator rod. Some of us have experienced the door pulling overcenter when opening, thus preventing closure. The block prevents this condition.

Scott, it looks like u have a balsa main spar in your Lightning behind the wing tube .....mine has ply for a spar, as does the pic of the one in post #249....what gives? Is one a newer version than the other? Just curoious?

Good catch on the spar - I never noticed it before. I have one of the earliest kits. My spar is glass laminated balsa and I've never had an issue in 2 years flying off grass. There have been a couple hard landings that broke Behotec gear, but never a spar issue. Apparently Comp-Arf changed to plywood at some point - actually a good change for strength.

After seeing your post, I checked some Ultra Lightning pics. It appears to have a plywood spar.

Regarding your wheel clearance issue - in addition to shimming the retract up, you need a lot of toe-in, thinner wheels like BVM Mig-15's or a smaller wheel dia. to clear the glued flap seam on the upper skin. The original prototype used nice wide Behotec wheels but they are smaller dia. I know your stuck with the classic wings, but the new ultra wings have a regular flap so the upper skin is flat. I assume this would eliminate the excessive toe-in needed on the original and allow a wider tire?

I have done this for the maiden flight, and when I lowered the flaps it pitched down quite sharply.. of course I did it with plenty of height and had time to raise the flaps to get out of this condition easily and landed it later with flaps after re-triming it. For the second flight I removed the mix and now it is flying this way, with no pitch trim change while flying "dirty" for landing.

Hello,

I have started the building of my Lightning Navy Scheme, I will try to post pictures as often as possible.
I have bought the new Behotec struts which seem really strong !
On the first pictures, I have painted the inside in grey.

Has anyone installed LIGHTS in their lightnings???

Can you please post some pics? I'm looking for ideas.

Helloooo Lightning guys !!! :D

The building of my lightning is almost finished and I had a question.
Do you use the UAT provided in the kit ? It seems to be a real good tank.

On many pictures of Lightnings I can see BVM UAT but I don't know if it is really useful.
I use a very simple UAT tank on my A10X (like the UAT provided by CARF) for 55 flights without any flameout. It is just a brass tube who go straight in the tank..

Thanks for your answers.

The included tank is not really a UAT, just a hopper/extra tank....I put an actual UAT in my Lightning....I have no experience doing what u did on your A-10X.........why change what works for years is my thought.....I also replaced the felt clunks in the kit with conventional clunks.....I read somewhere that after a while, the felt breaks down and comes apart, getting pulled into the filter and clogging it.....can u say white puff of smoke followed by yelling "deadstick"...[:@]

Hello Jean Phillipe,

As you see in my thread (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_82...tm.htm#8265662) I have the stock UAT installed. It works PERFECTLY. No BVM UAT is required because:
1) It charges more the fuel pump
2) The filter inside needs changing quite oftenly
3) The stock UAT is ROUND and works very nicely no matter the orientation of the plane it sucks fuel from the middle of the UAT tank

Come on post some pics for us Lightning fans....

We need a pic of your installation to see if anyone can help, the only thing I can think of is that the UAT is not vertical, some instaltions are more critical than others on the position of the UAT, personnally I don't use one, just a paper filter in the main tank which seems to enable full fuel lines to the pump, if there is air after the pump then I have an air leak on the line to or from the pump.

Hope that helps.

Mike

EDIT: Just to make you feel better, I havn't got any hair left to pull out. ;)

Hello guys

Sorry for the late answer to your posts.
Tassos, I will post pics of my Lightning very soon because I am waiting for an order from Emcotec :-(

I will use the "UAT" provided by CARF in the box.
Very important tip in the manual for the clunks provided in the kit : "remove the felt from the clunk !!"

I have used DUBRO clunks, it works perfectly.

:D:D:D

Thanks again it is a pleasure to share tips and good ideas on the lightning with you :o)

Nice work Jeanfi

I just heard from the UPS Store that my P-160SX is in!! yeah. NOW I can start building.

a few quick questions for the experts here.

1. what lengths did people use for servo extensions?
2. where do most of you buy multiplex connectors (in the US)
3. it appears that very few are using the Aux/Smoke tank. i don't want smoke and have be cautioned into too much weight. i have an extra tank. anyone interested in purchasing?
4. I have been hoping that Todd will get his landing gear for this plane done. he told me a few weeks ago that things were still in development. anyone have insight on the upcoming dreamworks gear other than what i heard? i hate to bug Todd with the same question.
5. are most people using the stock pipe or Tams? most installs seem to really work at getting a lot of batt weight up front, and i thougth that with Tam's lighter pipe, it would be less of an issue. comments (constructive please!).

thanks!

Joe-no longer at Eagle. yeah!!

Jeanfi

are these the new Behotec struts that were designed for the UltraLightning? are they a drop in fit to the "classic" lightning?

thanks

Hi Joeagle :D

My struts are from Behotec. I bought them from Altecare in Canada.
Ask Peter about what you need this is a very serious guy.

The maiden flight of mpy Lightning should be on April.

I will post new pics soon.
