RE: Comp ARF Flash update

I put trailing link struts on my flash and drilled out the original 6 mm pins so they are now 6.3mm (0.250")... I have not had to do any retract maintenance including replacing broken pins since doing this and I only have access to grass fields! the original straight struts put a big load on your main gear units... try changing to trailing link types!!!!!

(Ref 8mm holes I presume thy are Behotec type) The trunions are not man enough, 7mm is the maximum you can drill out, The wall of the trunion will be come to thin when drilled out to 8mm and thy will spread if not split after a few landings ...

Actually, I drilled mine out to 8mm and I have not had any problems with them. They have not split after at least twenty flights on grass. In fact, I was flying off grass, hit a big bump, and the strut rotated 45 degrees (I hadn't tightened the set screws enough). It pulled the wheel right off the axle and it skidded on the hub for about 50 feet before stopping (on grass, remember). In spite of that stress, the trunion with the 8mm hole held up fine...

ALL...What is a good small GPS device that will fit inside the fuse that can be used to determine speed etc? someone out there MUST have some ideas on this? THANKS

RE: Comp ARF Flash update

I bought a Garmin Foretrex 201 (wristband size gps) for measuring windsurfing speeds and tracks. I've also placed it in the fuse of RC models. It seems accurate as long as the sampling interval is set to the minimum and the plane is flown in a smooth race track pattern. If you fly tall verticals, the max speed numbers go nuts.

I'm posting this on behalf of Joel Patrick who is temporarily without internet access following a recent move.

Joel maidened his Super Eagle powered Flash today and would appreciate a bit of advice. His throws and setup are per the manual with the cg in the middle of the recommended range. After takeoff and climb out, Joel thought the elevator and ailerons were a bit touchy, even with expo, but not a big deal. To me, the plane looked locked in and very smooth. However, when Joel deployed full flaps in the landing pattern, he encountered pitch oscillation. Joel thought the Flash was acting tail heavy, and that is how it looked to me. He got it on the ground without incident. Same behavior during flight #2. Joel is a very capable pilot with a ton of flights on Bandits and BobCats. Any thoughts or advice regarding flaps down pitch oscillation that I can pass along to Joel?

As you can see from the pics, Joel did his usual masterful job of building and painting.

RE: Comp ARF Flash update

Two things. One is, if the flaps go down too far and the nose is held high on approach, they can blank the stabs and cause the oscillation. Check the flaps and be sure they don't go further down than the recommended range, and maybe even a bit less. The second is the CG, or course. Mine is actually at the front end of the range and I have to hold a bit (not too much) of down elevator when inverted, but it is totally docile in the pattern, so I leave it that way...

I had the same situation with mine. I reduced the flaps by "that looks about right" and now it is a completely different plane on landing. I took out maybe 10mm out of the flap throw.

Thanks Bob and jkeze. I'll pass your responses to the above question along to Joel.

My maiden was the same, very pitch sensitive. I moved from the rear cg point of 360mm to the forward point of 370. I am using the recommended full flap with no problems. It is very stable on landing.

I would try a little more forward CG !
very nice color scheme

RE: Comp ARF Flash update

Thanks Bob for posting on my behalf. I had my hands full on the maiden flight of this bird and it's just pure luck (and maybe a little skill) that I got her back in one piece. After changing a few things, this jet is a pleasure to fly.
First, my CG was way off...tail heavy and my fault. I rechecked it and found that I needed 2 more ozs in the nose to bring the CG to the midpoint of balance.
Second, the landing flap defection of 65mm is way too much as specified by CompArf. I reduced this to 45mm and what a difference.
Third, the aileron and elevator throws as published are too much...hence the reason for 40% of expo required. I reduced these throws by 2-3 mm and she is spot on.
These are my opinions but I feel CompArf should republish the control throws; especially the flaps.
I put 3 more flights on this bird last weekend and it was a blast to fly. My Flash came out at 24.5 lbs dry...way more heavy than I would have liked but she flies great and sticks to the runway on landing.
The Jet Central Eagle has performed flawlessly...not one problem and I will own more of these turbines. The lifetime warranty is bonus!!!

This is what you get when you turn a flash to quick and a little to low the wing will tuck under and bite you and then its gone in a FLASH[:o][>:]

I am thinking about a Flash for my P-70.
Anyone flying one with a P-70? I saw one at Superman 2 years ago with a P-70 and I thought it flew great. Also what alternatives are there for the landing gear, wheels and brakes other than what is offered my Comp. ARF?

Blimey Fred, you did stuff it in well:(,after Sat it appeared to be flying so well, just get stuck in and build another one !, i am sure Dave is waiting in the wings for your payment .lol.
Its great flying jet but they all bite if pushed[X(]

Some are using Jet 1A. I believe that Russ is using Tam's gear and Rafael is using some BVM Bandit gears.

Jet 1A users have reported in this thread that it is required to modify the airframe for it to fit properly. I'm using the stock Behotec LG.

you dont need to alter anymore then with the original gear
the new oleo,s that came this year have almost 0 offset.
the "old"ones you needed to trim a bit of the thunnel

These fit without mods? Will they fit (or can they be modified) 8mm pins? Do they fit the stock (behotec) wheels and brakes?

What is the part #?

Thanks,
Joe
