Hi all
Ok worked a lot today but do not feel like I did a lot.

Sprayed the canopy with the white needed for the colour scheme I have chosen but the canopy frame was not a good quality as I would have liked.
I rubbed it all down and filled where needed to get the required finish.
Fox Comp tells me that the new ones are much better so it should not be a problem to customers.

So I had to spray the black as well to finish it off.

Also finished assembly of instrument panels and shrouds, some painting done, but not finished.
Should have the painting finished tomorrow night and seats etc glued in.

Pics are self-explanatory.

The scheme i have chosen is this one.
Tailormade decals do a set for it, although it does not show on the website. They are behind with update.

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

I have been communicating with Fox Composites and they are going to introduce a few changes for the next production release.

The main change is live hinges on flaps, rudder, ailerons and i believe even UC doors. [8D]
However, they do have a small stock of the kits the same as the one i have been building (still am).

So for a limited time only, these are to be reduced in price to £395.00 here in the UK

As you can see, there is nothing wrong with them; it is just that you have to do the hinging, so if you don’t mind that little extra work, save yourself £100. [X(]
Contact Fox Composites for details of this and news on any local dealers.

See you tomorrow.

Hello all

Well worked like hell tonight to get the cockpit finished.
Almost done, no joystick till I get a pilot, so I will screw the canopy on for the moment.

I am quite pleased with the way it has come out, looks the part.:D
Still a little touch up to do.
Tomorrow I will be getting on with the rest of the radio fit etc, as I am aiming for test flight this weekend :D

Hi Paul,

I noticed that there seem to be glass fibre supports for the main retract mounts and engine mounts.
Were these pre-installed or did you put them in ?
How stiff are they, are they in the right place (if pre-installed) ! ?

Thanks.

GrayUK 02-27-2007 07:43 AM

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Spartan

The glass mounts are pre installed. It is very rigid but have some flex.
On the mains there is a ply plate that is to be glued in place yet, (maybe tonight). This holds the main UC.

So far i have found the plates to be all correct and where they should be.
The ones in the fus are designed to set the engine centre line correctly.

I am at the build stage now where I need to consider CG, so tonight I plan to install main UC and nose gear.
Then with the 44 in place I can check balance and see where the radio etc is to go.
This was also a reason for completing the cockpit at this stage.

See you tonight.

Paul

Thanks Paul,

I've not seen that novel way of producing ply mounts before.

Do you think this model would be overpowered/overweight with a MW54 ?

GrayUK 02-27-2007 08:04 AM

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Well, it is a good question.

I was not in favour of it initially but having seen Trevor’s fly with a P60 I would say yes.

Just make sure you keep the weight as low as possible and ensure you fit wing fences and under wing fairings (I will be doing that later).

When Trevor was flying his recently he was deliberately slowing it up (near the ground) on final landing stage. It flew pretty slowly (nose high) before it showed any tendency to drop a wing.
The thing to remember is that the wing loading will be higher and you must respect that. Provided you do, then I see no issue.

With the 44 Gold it will have the same power to weight but be about 3lbs lighter (I hope).

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Spartan,

I have a P60 in mine and it is fine, probably a little heavier install than the MW54 because of the weight of the ECU and if you have a manual start motor then you will save more weight on the battery. Pauls will be a good pound lighter than that. The retract plates are a great idea and work extremely well and so far very strong indeed. Everything has Jim Fox logic stamped on it. That is a good thing when it comes to models by the way.

1lb? i hope it is more than that, dont forget, i also need half the fuel!:D

R_Belluomini

Sorry about that, what is needed is a USA dealer who can bring more in by sea. Greatly reduced shipping costs.

Ok guys
Big cleanup tonight, workbench full of paints etc.

All cleaned down and out with the wings again.
Want to get the retracts in so I can look at the CG balance.

Pic 1 shows components on the bench, I have chosen some nice hard rubber 65mm wheels for the mains.
Pic 2 and 3. You need to cut out a hole in the upside of the wing near the front to allow cables and pipes through. (Thanks for the measurements Trev).
Pic 4 Hole needs to be made in the spar as shown on both sides to allow cables and pipe through. I have used a sticky base to hold back the cables.
Pic 5 Shows the cable now installed and coming out of the exit.
Pic 6 Wing with plates and retracts placed ready for fitting tomorrow.

See ya.

Paul :D

Paul,

I did state a "good pound", I guess 1.5lbs as mine with a 44 in weighed 11 and now it weighs 12.5 with the P60.

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

that is a pretty slick setup on the gear plates. paul did you use regular adhesive on them or something silicone based

GrayUK 02-27-2007 07:12 PM

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Pat

Hello stranger!

No the glass fibre plates are already fitted into the model as it comes.
The ply plates need to be fitted by the builder.
They come cut for springairs. Once you have fitted the gear to the plates and checked the install, the ply plates are bonded in.

Its a nice setup.;)
The same sort of plates are used for the engine mounts, pre-bonded into the fuselage.

Paul

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Paul,

Sounds like you are on a roll with this one, well done. I also think that your Springairs are a little lighter than my Robarts which also fitted straight in. i do think that the Robarts are stronger though, and yes yes I know with the extra weight they would have to be, before you say it.:D
