RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

I would like to say thanks to all of you for your concern over the crash.;)

Still cannot bring myself to go sifting through the bits. [:o]

Maybe tomorrow night I will feel like it.

I would like to point out that this is a nice model, well moulded and the first part of the flight was great, the 44 Gold is a perfect power plant for it, off grass, no trouble at all. Absolutely blistering top speed and a nice sight in the sky.
I just wish I had had longer to really evaluate the model before circumstances conspired against me. [>:]

Watch this space for more updates and maybe another build?
Thanks again to all of you.

Paul

Paul,

sorry to hear about this mate. Do you think there could have been blow back on the elevator? what servo did you use? and did you have any ATV or rates dialed in?

My condolences to you Paul, I DO know how you feel right now, because it happened to me on the maiden of my Harpoon. I know it was a PCM lockout. I do hope you find the cause. My engine was a Behotec J66, so i didnt have the advantage of the friendly Sarah at Wrenn to help me. The model was completely TOTALLED, & the engine cost £700 to repair. I hope the repairs to your Wren comes to less. Ray

Really sorry to hear about the crash Paul, she was looking like a lovely little model already. Tragic.

[:o]

I hope you track down the culprit ok and can come back to the next one knowing what went wrong this time!

The description so far is sounding a little similar to the description of the Thorpe Hawk crash in RCJI - I wonder if there'll be any other similarities in due course?

Anyway, best of luck with tracing it and well done on putting together such a great thread and producing such a great looking model!

cheers
Piers

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Well all, once again thanks, especially for the appreciation of the thread, it was very quiet when I was doing it and I was beginning to wonder if people liked it.

I felt it was a good idea, you would see any faults as they happened and also of course the good bits. It was meant to be an honest 'live' view of the build and i hoped it would culminate in a successful conclusion. [sm=52_52.gif]

It didn't, but you got to see it, no secrets, without the thread you would never have known, so for that alone it is a new approach.

At this point there is still no definitive conclusions as to what happened, unfortunately as you saw the model was a real wreck.
I can say, it was not structural, the plane did not break-up or anything fall of, it was not flutter or failure of hinges etc.

I am communication with Fox Comp who are being very helpful and constructive, we have some theories but that is all they are it would be unfair to Fox Comp to publish something that is non proven.
If and when I have something that we can prove I will post it here.

One thing is for sure,
I WILL be getting another one, and i WILL build it and fly it on this thread, and it WILL be a success, as Trevor says "Unfinished business” the gloves are off [sm=48_48.gif] [sm=punching.gif]

Paul ;)

Ralle thanks for the offer, i will email you on that subject.

As much as I hate doing this, here are a couple more pictures from different angles, as you can see all controls are in the right place.
No parts anywhere but the impact point.

Came across this thread tonight by accident and could'nt stop reading it, it is now 2:30am and I am going to bed sick of what happened to your model:(

I was dying to ask, did the cockpit come with the kit or where did you get it, also the fairings for under the wings, as I have a AMD one.
I really liked the better scale detail, hope you start another quickly.

Trevor

Can you give some details on the flight caracteristics of the aeroplane from your experence with it.

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Xairflyer,

Flys realy well at 12.5lbs dry but at this weight it flys more like a sport jet, fast. Mine has a p60 and I have yet to try it from grass, not that take off will be a problem but maybe more of an issue getting it back in to the shorter strip with confidence. I haven`t finished messing around with the flap and CG settings but will get to fly it more this weekend so will advise then. Tracks like a sport plane on the ground and in the air, knife edge flight requires a little push on the elevator but holds very nicely. I love mine.

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

The acceleration and take off performance was perfect from grass with a 44Gold.

Climb out with total authority.
Very fast performer.

After much investigation and deliberation i can only make the following statements about the crash.

1) The airframe did not fail
2) All control surfaces were in place
3) There was no flutter.

I conclude therefore that it was pilot error, a short lockout, possible disorientation, turbulence?
Any one of those combined with the sensitive ailerons???
Unfortunately it happened so quickly.

I just don’t know, I can not point a finger definitely in any direction so....my new one is on its' way:D
I shall report as it is built and it will fly again on this thread ;)

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Thanks Trevor

Paul it will Be interesting to see what changes they have made to it since you got the first one. Just curious how much deflection did you have on the ailerons ? what about CG do you think it may have been tailheavy.

GrayUK 03-23-2007 04:12 PM

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Xairflyer

I have not got it yet, but i will keep you informed.
CG was about right as far as i could tell, it did not feel like a tail heavey model.
I will probably half the movemet on the ailerons.

Paul
;)

Oh, by the way, glad you enjoyed the thread.
Sad ending though [&o]

What amount of movement did you have ?

Did the cockpit come with the kit or did you get it somewhere else.

Hi Paul, Dave Bowen here, blast from the past. So sorry about the Hawk, get another and crack on. Been away for a few years, but getting back into it. Decided to refurbish my old JFM 91 powered hawk (Yes it's still around and has been well looked after) and put my Wren 54 in it. That was always a great flying model. Who is UK distributor for Jim's new hawk. Hope to see all you guys soon in the not too distant future.

Regards, Dave Bowen

Dave,

Good heavens, never met you but do remember the RCJI articles from waaaaaay back. Nice to hear you will be back on the jets soon. Try Dave Wilshere at Motors & Rotors for stock. They are not in the country yet but I understand should be around the middle of April as they are on the water now.

Regards Trevor Skedge.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the info. Paul, of course I'm still ugly, but slimmer than you:D:D. Trevor hope to fly with you soon. Would be good to try and compare the old JFM Hawk with the new one. I have some spare moulded flap fairings from the original kit if anyone needs some. (still have enough for myself).

RE: FOX COMPOSITES Bae HAWK, Build thread

Dave,

Would be nice to meet you, perhaps you will come up to Classic Jets in May, no too far from Swindon. If you are a JMA member, did you know there is a meet at Wroughton next weekend? I will be away but if you want to catch up with the other guys then that would be a good start. Funny you should mention the flap fairings because I lost one at the last jet meet so keep some back for me if you would.

Trevor Skedge.
