Madras OR Fly in
Madras Oregon Jet
fly May 24,25 New runway about 100' wide and 3000'+ long, nice. [email protected] for info. Onsite camping 1500' West of runway. No hook up. |
Madras OR Fly in
The runway is hard surface. It is a little used runway at the city
airport. Airport traffic is about 2 per day. Darryl Usher |

Sounds like a great place to fly! What is the elavation there?
Thanks Charlie |
Madras OR Fly in
I think it is around 2400 feet at the airport but town is down in the valley about 400 ft less. On the internet, the AHRMA moto cross guys that go to the Willow Creek meet recommend they re-jet their carbs for 2500 feet. So it is probably not much higher then Spokane.

Sounds like a much better spot than the one they used to use. I plan on being there. Should have my F-86 going by then.

The entrance is on the south west side of the airport, then follow the signs. Same as racetrack, but turn right on entering.

Hi Darryl
Dose the runway have lights ? Not that i would try to hit one. Charlie |
Madras OR Fly in
I was only there once and don't remember any lights. I know there were no approach lights and no lights across the end that
we were to use, but up the sides I can't say. |

Go to the following website and check out the stats and photo. No lights as I remember. http://www.airnav.com/airport/S33 The photo is looking north and shows the taxi way and main runway at Madras. Immediately south of the main runway is a concrete somewhat hourglass configuration that has a road that goes off to the NW to another concrete intersection at the upper middle edge of the photo. In the middle of the photo is a couple of large alfalfa fields and the new flying site is directly north of the intersection of the two fields. If you look at the extreme north end of the main Madras runway you will see another concrete intersection which completes a large triangle. We will be flying in the middle of the top side of the triangle. The old flying site is further west then the photo shows and is an unimproved continuation of the area that we will be flying at. The old site is now the camping area. Hope that helps. Roy |

Hey Charlie,
If there are lights maybe we could get some of those bumper rails that the kids use at the bowling alley! Chris |

Just got a look at the photos. It looks like there are white markers that stick up about every 200 ft or so that are about 6 to 8 ft off the slurry coat. This is definitely a lot better then the old runway so it should not be a problem. Lots of room. Should be a fun time.
I am planning on driving down Thurs and setting up camp that evening. See you all there. Roy |

Roy,
If your'e setting up camp on Thurs. does that mean we can fly Friday as well? Galen |

I went early last year and did some high speed runs with the MIG at the old site. Since this is part of the airport and it is the first time at this site, I am not sure what arrangements have been made yet for Fri. I just have to get out of town and going down a day or so early makes the trip a lot more relaxing. Last year we drove to Bend Thurs eve for a movie and dinner. It was a real treat. I am planning on going to the Denver Jet Rally in early June leaving on the 3rd. I will stop in Payson on the way back and visit kids and grand kids. This will probably my longest trip for the year unless my kids talk me into going to the Michigan Jets in Jul. That way, after the meet, I can drop down to Indianapolis and back up to Duluth to visit more kids and grand kids. Then on the way home I can catch the High Plains Jet Rally in Montana. My wife thinks that is a good plan. I will have to see how the fuel prices drop. Roy |

Sounds like a real summer full of jet flying. I was hoping to make the Dixie jet Rally in St George, but time's running out and it's starting to look iffy. I will be at Madras and Deer Lodge as well as Princeton and whidby Island if all goes as planned. My BVM F-86 won't be ready for Madras as it's in Florida being painted but I'll have the Bobcat and SJ F-16 there. Dean - hope your F-86 is ready for Madras so I can see the setup and watch it fly. The way I go is down to Vancouver on I-5, take 205 and cross into Ore. There are several ways to get to Hwy 26 off of 205, any one will work. Hwy 26 will take you through Government Camp near Mt Hood and just stay on that road through the Warm Springs Indian Reservation (which is in a large valley). You will climb up out of the valley and head for Madras. As you begin to go down into the valley where Madras is located, on the right hand side is a sign for the golf course (about 800 feet as the road starts to drop). Turn right at the golf course sign, cross the tracks and irrigation canal and continue west for approx 1 mile. Turn right onto a gravel road for about 200 feet and then turn left on the road that leads to the drag strip (should be jet signs posted). It gets a little tricky at this point but follow the signs to the right (drag strip is on the left). The dirt and gravel road goes back to asphalt and after you take a sweeping left onto the straight one lane road for about 2 miles, you will reach the end and will see folks camping on the left and the flying site on the right.
Hope that helps. Roy |

Just had an e-mail from the Madras CD. It seems a mixup at the AMA and the magazine ad was not run in a timely manner. The jet fly is on.
New flying site is directly East of the old site and the runway is much, much better. See you there. Roy |
