Just thought I would keep you updated on my BD-5J Project. The wings are now sheeted and ready for final fitting on the fuse.

RE: BD-5J Project
Sticks,
I see what you mean about the wing structure. It should be plenty strong. Looks very good from here. Take Care Marty |
RE: BD-5J Project
Hey Marty, good to see youre still around....

RE: BD-5J Project
I guess this is about a 40% scale size ? What landing gear are you using ? Do you have scale struts for it ?
|
RE: BD-5J Project
The BD is 1/3 scale, and for the first one I will be using standard Robart gear and struts.

Love Air Ft. Collins,Co.has scheduled a JET RALLY for Sept 12th through 14th (Fri-Sun). Hope to see your BD-5 there. |
RE: BD-5J Project
Sidgates,
I'm going to have to put that on the schedule thanks for the info. Is this an annual event? What is their site like? |
RE: BD-5J Project
I gather this is the same exact size as the old Byrons kits ?
|
RE: BD-5J Project
That's right

RE: BD-5J Project
Thanks again for all the responses, and the pictures of the full size BD5J in construction is great. I have a P-60 to put in the BD5, but I am toying with the idea of a P-80. The only problem, if I go with the P-80 I need to trade or sell my P-60 so I can get it. Any comments on power are more than welcome, please let me learn from your experience.

I have now finished the tail surfaces on my BD, just htought you might want to see it with the vertical on. I weighed everything the other night and with the turbine, retracts, etc. minus radio gear and finishing I am right around 12lbs so it looks like I just might be able to hit 16lbs which is my target weight. Next is glassing the wings and tail feathers and cutting the control surfaces.

I had an FTE T-500 in my Jemart BD-5J. Perfect engine for that size at 1/3 scale. :)

RE: BD-5J Project
I´m very interested in the BD-5 project. Did you finished it and fly? I would like to see some pictures of the finished plane. Is it going to be for sale as an ARF kit.
Thanks for your info. I´ve been trying to get a kit, and found nothing.. Hector |
RE: BD-5J Project
My how times flys. Here is the latest on the BD-5 project, I should be starting to primer the fuse this week. All flying surfaces are complete and are waiting to be covered. My plan right now is to fly it later this month, I will take some pictures tonight and post them. I thought I better fly it first before I started talking about kitting them. If I do kit them they would be a short kit with the fuse and wing/tail foam cores. I wish I could offer it in an ARF form, but I have no plans at this time. Thanks for all the interest.

RE: BD-5J Project
Pretty cool...but why do you have it so high on the gear?
|
RE: BD-5J Project
I was gonna say.. the landing gear on my bd5 is like 1/2 the height of those.
|
RE: BD-5J Project
Hey the BD-5 looks great! Think you might get it done before summer is over? Come fly it down in SLC or Grantsville. Let me know if you need any assistance getting the turbine set up.
Cheers! Mark West SLC, UT [email protected] |
RE: BD-5J Project
Mark,
Thanks, good to hear from you. I hope to have it finished by the end of the month, I will keep you updated as the first flight gets closer. |
RE: BD-5J Project
You are right, the gear is pretty high. We fly off of salt flats here, so I wanted to keep it high so I didn't get salty dirt coming through the intakes. This is also a proto-type plane, so the next one I will have shorter gear and do a little more on the scale detail.

RE: BD-5J Project
Very cool project. I have been sort of waiting for the X-tremejets BD-5J.
Do you plan on selling the fuse and cores? If so, how much? I think that it would be a unique model to have and there should be plenty of room to stuff everything in that fuse. Tailwinds, John |

It's amazing how a little paint makes a plane come to life. Here are some pictures of how I painted the BD5 fuse. I tried using a stencil, which worked better than expected. I have a vinyl cutting machine and instead of trying to match the blue and red with vinyl, I did the inverse and used a stencil and paint. Let me know if you have any questions.

RE: BD-5J Project
pilot TW, any chance in offering a bare kit? I like the BD-5 as the lines look "close", but their are some things that need to be changed to it in order for it to be "right" for me. I'm looking at doing a extremely scale version of the BD-5, and a kit would be a better option for me.
