Hi all, I'm considering breaking into the world of jets. Have no jet experiance . I'm an average r.c pilet ( no 3d crap) Sooooooooooooo what would some recommendations for a newbie like me. Engine, engine size and plane?? Do they make like a jet trainer that won't go a bazillon mph just to fly it.

Hi Sal,

Not sure where you are in SoCal but there is a huge group of guys that fly all around the region. We will be in the San Fernando valley flying this Sunday and on March 15th maybe 20 of us or so will be at a place south of Bakersfield called "Buttonwillow". If you want to stop by I think you will be able to see some Boomerangs and some of the turbine set ups that are successful for a lot of people, including several beginners.

Anyway, good luck with you search, I would say jump right in the water is fine. Jets are a lot of fun, I can assure you.

Job hunting is one of my very least liked things to do.
Good luck in your hunt.

But on the bright side, that gives you a lot of time to do a lot of reading here on RCU about jets.
There is an incredible amount of knowledge here for the taking.
There are some huge threads about jet "trainers"
If you are looking for an ARF, the Baby Boomerang is probably the most popular, if you like to build, the Reaction 54 is hard to beat.
There are a lot of other good first jets out there, these two are just very popular and have stood the test of time.

Ya, you have the right to say most anything you want to. But you are asking for assistance from jet pilots, many of whom love to fly all types of model airplanes...from jets to control-line and including 3-D. Do you think it's nice to put down other's passion just because you don't like it or don't have the skills needed to fly it? All while asking for help from them. Bad form.

Easy guys. Let's not be so quick to jump on Steve. I don't think he was putting anyone else's style of flying down, just trying to say he wanted to do some straight forward flying around. I'm sure if he said that kind of thing in person it would have not been an issue, but unfortunalty when we type something, the black and white seems to sometimes be taken for face value without the help of facial expressions or body english.

Now lets get on to more constructive stuff like finding a new jet for Steve.

I'd personally go with the Baby Boomer. Get your feet wet with that or jump into a Bobcat. Like Matt said we will be at the field Sunday for some flying.

To those of you that have helped thank you. To those of you who thought I was putting anyone's style. likes or dislikes down you need to grow up a bit. Bad form is jumping in and whinning about a figure of speach. Like I said I had no intentions of bad mouthing anyone choise of flying styles or equipment. I use the word crap like many use the word "frigging"
I don't belive I was putting anyones choise of aircrafte or flying style down. If I had said 3d flying and the people who do it are crap then you would have a valid "fight" but I never said that at all. And you are right.I don't have the skills to do 3d flying, not even close. I don't even want to learn, I find no intrest in it, the same goes for heli's. Op's there I went and insulted the heli pilots. All I was doing was asking a simple question about getting into first time jets.
My simple question has been misconstrued by a few shallow people who get hurt so quickly by a simple word. Like those people are so rightous that they never use figures of speech.......Like I said before get over it.

Hi Steve - there are 2 huge threads here on RCU - One for the Reaction54 and one for the Baby Boomerang (sometimes called Boomerang Intro). If you want to build one, I recommend the Reaction54 - it has retracts and flaps like most jets. The video above is fixed gear, as well as the AV8TOR, Cub Jet, Facet which are all kits. The basic R54 kit is less than $500. If you prefer an ARF, then the Boomerang series are great flyers - The Baby or Intro, the Elan, or the XL. The 3 are listed in order of increasing size. On RCU today, they announced the Baby on sale for $599 while supply lasts. They are normally $769. Both the R54 and the Boomerang have web sites with pictures, prices, and videos. For the Boomer go to Boomerang Jets and the R54 go to BTE Engineering.

I spent 11 words on the subject, yet you've typed a novel. We're all about flying, not ranting. BTW - No need to get worked up and wrap yourself in the American flag. No one here is infringing on your 1st amendment rights.

Back on topic... I just got my first jet recently. It's a Tamjet F-16 with a P-120SE. If you're a decent pilot you'll no problem flying it with an experienced turbine pilot by your side. I took off and landed the plane on my second flight and got my turbine waiver on my 8th.

Steve - to fly a turbine jet airplane you need an AMA waiver. Go to the AMA web site and you can read the requirements to get a waiver. You can fly on a buddy box without a waiver.

Steve, just give me a call or Email me if you'd like to come out to see some jet in action - there are 3 or 4 of us who regularly fly turbines at the MCAS Miramar club field. I will be out this weekend with the Boomer, a Tam's F-16, and (hopefully) test fly my JL L39.
