Route 66 Jets
The Route 66 RC Club (72) Members are again hosting the Route 66 Jets Event at the Litchfield Illinois Municipal Airport September 4-7.
This facility is rather unique because it has two nonintersecting runways one of them being, with FAA approval, closed to general aviation for the duration of the event. The only thing that prevents you from flying every day and all day is yourself and Mother Nature as the North/South Runway & Air Space is ours for the four days. There are no planned interruptions to you flying when you want and as often as you like! Arrive on the 3rd if you like to get a good spot and help with the set up. Roger http://www.route66jets.com/ |

Hey David D, we will miss you but u gotta do the family thing.
Speaking of family here is a thumb nail of family things in around R66. I am going to post this for possible domestic and foreign tourist attractions along with R66Jets. Keep in touch and good flying, Roger Route 66 Jets/Tourist Attractions Come early, stay late! Make your trip to Route 66 Jets a family affair! Illinois welcomes you with family friendly places to visit and interesting things to do. Litchfield, IL, the site of Route 66 Jets, is on the original Mother Road. You can have a meal at the Ariston Cafe, still located on Route 66. For more history and fun, visit Springfield, IL, just 30 miles north of Litchfield. Visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library and be prepared to be moved by his life story. For more ideas, check out http://www.visitspringfieldillinois.com/. No stay in Springfield would be complete without a trip to Lincoln's restored neighborhood and a tour of the only home he ever owned; or visit Lincoln's New Salem State Park and picture Mr. Lincoln as he first arrived in Illinois. If you enjoy architecture, the Dana-Thomas House is sure to please. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and is lovingly maintained. St. Louis, MO is just south of Litchfield, and is home to the Gateway Arch, commemorating the gateway to the west. Check out the St. Louis Zoo and the Children's Museum; or visit the St. Louis Science Museum. For a change of pace you can tour the Budweiser Brewery or see a St. Louis Cardinal's baseball game. http://www.explorestlouis.com/ Of course, 245 miles north on I-55, the City of Chicago is waiting to be explored. The highway will take you right into the heart of the city, where you will find the Art Institute of Chicago, The Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetaium. Take a day and visit the Museum of Science and Industry or ride to the top of the Sears Tower and admire the skyline. http://choosechicago.com/ There are so many things to do in Chicago that everyone in the family will be able to find their favorites. |

RE: Route 66 Jets
Roger,
Is there any chance of getting the runway lights removed for the event? This was an issue that was addressed by Gary Jefferson in Ohio, we flew from a 30' wide taxi way. What is the size of the runway we will use at this event? Thanks, John |
RE: Route 66 Jets
The runway is really wide. I don't think landing lights will be an issue.
|
RE: Route 66 Jets
Hum, well the runway is 75' wide 4000' long without so much as a hair line crack.....would be a lot of lights to remove, huh. Anyway will inquiry about the possibility of removing them in the vicinity of our normal t/o and landing area. In any case we will continue to put baskets over the lights if they are not removable.
Thanks for the idea. Say JohnR & Lewis what is your ETA? |
RE: Route 66 Jets
Roger,
You say it's only 4000 feet long? Man, I better make sure my brakes are working!! heheheheh How are the runoff areas? heheheh.. :) Don |
RE: Route 66 Jets
Got my room. They are $49.00 at Am Best Value inn.

RE: Route 66 Jets
This was an issue that was addressed by Gary Jefferson in Ohio, we flew from a 30' wide taxi way. John, I know it is difficult to tell but our taxiway was actually about 47 feet wide. We fly at our local club which has a 30 foot wide runway and if you are use to flying from such a narrow strip you can really tell the difference. Roger, I saw one of the lights removed after our event and there is just some type of quick coupling that turns and then the taxi light unplugs from the base. It looks very simple. I wish Sandy and I could come this year but we are going to Michigan Jets next weekend, Heart of Ohio in two weeks and then the DOGS show the week after that; hope you have a great event. |
RE: Route 66 Jets
Roger,
I will arrive around noon Thursday. See you there. |
RE: Route 66 Jets
Roger,
I will probably be there on Thursday around noon. John |
RE: Route 66 Jets

Still looking for a big top or 2 at a reasonable price but not having any luck. Does anyone have a source that might be interested? |
